Also these are Proverbs of Solomon, that men of Hezekiah king of Judah transcribed: --

2 E ' gloria di DIO nascondere una cosa, ma è gloria dei re investigarla.

The honour of God to hide a thing, And the honour of kings to search out a matter.

3 I cieli per la loro altezza, la terra per la sua profondità e il cuore dei re sono imperscrutabili.

The heavens for height, and the earth for depth, And the heart of kings -- unsearchable.

4 T ogli le scorie dall'argento e ne uscirà un vaso per l'orefice.

Take away dross from silver, And a vessel for the refiner goeth forth,

5 T ogli l'empio dalla presenza del re e il suo trono sarà reso stabile nella giustizia,

Take away the wicked before a king, And established in righteousness is his throne.

6 N on esaltarti alla presenza del re e non metterti al posto dei grandi uomini,

Honour not thyself before a king, And in the place of the great stand not.

7 p erché è meglio che ti si dica: «Sali quassú», piuttosto che essere abbassato davanti al principe, che i tuoi occhi hanno visto.

For better he hath said to thee, `Come thou up hither,' Than he humble thee before a noble, Whom thine eyes have seen.

8 N on muovere causa troppo in fretta, perché alla fine tu non sappia cosa fare, quando il tuo prossimo ti avrà svergognato.

Go not forth to strive, haste, turn, What dost thou in its latter end, When thy neighbour causeth thee to blush?

9 D iscuti la tua causa contro il tuo prossimo, ma non rivelare il segreto di un altro,

Thy cause plead with thy neighbour, And the secret counsel of another reveal not,

10 a ffinché chi ti ascolta non getti discredito su di te e la tua reputazione venga per sempre macchiata.

Lest the hearer put thee to shame, And thine evil report turn not back.

11 U na parola detta al tempo giusto è come dei pomi d'oro su un vassoio d'argento.

Apples of gold in imagery of silver, the word spoken at its fit times.

12 P er un orecchio obbediente, un saggio che rimprovera è come un orecchino d'oro, un ornamento d'oro fino.

A ring of gold, and an ornament of pure gold, the wise reprover to an attentive ear.

13 U n messaggero fedele è per quelli che lo mandano, come il fresco della neve al tempo della mietitura, perché egli rinfresca l'anima del suo padrone.

As a vessel of snow in a day of harvest, a faithful ambassador to those sending him, And the soul of his masters he refresheth.

14 C hi si vanta falsamente di aver fatto un dono è come nuvole e vento senza pioggia.

Clouds and wind, and rain there is none, a man boasting himself in a false gift.

15 C on la pazienza si persuade un principe, e la lingua dolce spezza le ossa.

By long-suffering is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh a bone.

16 S e trovi del miele, mangiane quanto ti basta, perché non ti rimpinzi per poi vomitarlo.

Honey thou hast found -- eat thy sufficiency, Lest thou be satiated it, and hast vomited it.

17 M etti di rado il piede in casa del tuo vicino, perché non si stanchi di te fino a odiarti.

Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house, Lest he be satiated thee, and have hated thee.

18 L 'uomo che depone il falso contro il suo prossimo è come una mazza, una spada e una freccia acuta.

A maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, the man testifying against his neighbour a false testimony.

19 L a fiducia in un uomo sleale nel giorno dell'avversità è come un dente rotto e un piede slogato.

A bad tooth, and a tottering foot, the confidence of the treacherous in a day of adversity.

20 C hi canta canzoni a un cuore afflitto è come chi si toglie il vestito in un giorno di freddo e come aceto sulla soda.

Whoso is taking away a garment in a cold day, vinegar on nitre, And a singer of songs on a sad heart.

21 S e il tuo nemico ha fame, dagli pane da mangiare, e se ha sete, dagli acqua da bere,

If he who is hating thee doth hunger, cause him to eat bread, And if he thirst, cause him to drink water.

22 p erche cosí accumulerai carboni ardenti sul suo capo, e l'Eterno ti ricompenserà.

For coals thou art putting on his head, And Jehovah giveth recompense to thee.

23 L a tramontana porta la pioggia, e la lingua che calunnia di nascosto rende un volto indignato.

A north wind bringeth forth rain, And a secret tongue -- indignant faces.

24 E ' meglio abitare sull'angolo di un tetto che in una casa condivisa con una moglie litigiosa.

Better to sit on a corner of a roof, Than a woman of contentions, and a house of company.

25 U na buona notizia da paese lontano è come acqua fresca a una persona stanca e assetata.

cold waters for a weary soul, So a good report from a far country.

26 I l giusto che vacilla davanti all'empio è come una sorgente torbida e un pozzo inquinato.

A spring troubled, and a fountain corrupt, the righteous falling before the wicked.

27 M angiare troppo miele non è bene, e ricercare la propria gloria non è gloria.

The eating of much honey is not good, Nor a searching out of one's own honour -- honour.

28 L 'uomo che non sa dominare la propria ira è come una città smantellata senza mura.

A city broken down without walls, a man without restraint over his spirit!
