1 A llora Pilato prese Gesú e lo fece flagellare.

Then, therefore, did Pilate take Jesus and scourge,

2 E i soldati, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero addosso un manto di porpora

and the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns, did place on his head, and a purple garment they put around him,

3 e dicevano: «Salve, o re dei Giudei»; e lo schiaffeggiavano.

and said, `Hail! the king of the Jews;' and they were giving him slaps.

4 P oi Pilato uscí di nuovo e disse loro: «Ecco, io ve lo conduco fuori, affinché sappiate che non trovo in lui alcuna colpa».

Pilate, therefore, again went forth without, and saith to them, `Lo, I do bring him to you without, that ye may know that in him I find no fault;'

5 G esú dunque uscí, portando la corona di spine e il manto di porpora. E Pilato disse loro: «Ecco l'uomo!».

Jesus, therefore, came forth without, bearing the thorny crown and the purple garment; and he saith to them, `Lo, the man!'

6 O ra, quando lo videro i capi sacerdoti e le guardie, si misero a gridare, dicendo: «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo». Pilato disse loro: «Prendetelo voi e crocifiggetelo, perché io non trovo in lui colpa alcuna».

When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers did see him, they cried out, saying, `Crucify, crucify;' Pilate saith to them, `Take ye him -- ye, and crucify; for I find no fault in him;'

7 I Giudei gli risposero: «Noi abbiamo una legge e secondo la nostra legge egli deve morire, perché si è fatto Figlio di Dio».

the Jews answered him, `We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, for he made himself Son of God.'

8 Q uando Pilato udí queste parole, ebbe ancor piú paura;

When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid,

9 e , rientrato nel pretorio, disse a Gesú: «Di dove sei tu?». Ma Gesú non gli diede alcuna risposta.

and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, `Whence art thou?' and Jesus gave him no answer.

10 P ilato perciò gli disse: «Non mi parli? Non sai che io ho il potere di crocifiggerti e il potere di liberarti?».

Pilate, therefore, saith to him, `To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?'

11 G esú rispose: «Tu non avresti alcun potere su di me se non ti fosse dato dall'alto; perciò chi mi ha consegnato nelle tue mani ha maggior colpa».

Jesus answered, `Thou wouldst have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'

12 D a quel momento Pilato cercava di liberarlo; ma i Giudei gridavano, dicendo: «Se liberi costui, tu non sei amico di Cesare; chiunque si fa re, si oppone a Cesare».

From this was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, `If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.'

13 P ilato dunque, udite queste parole, condusse fuori Gesú e si pose a sedere in tribunale nel luogo detto "Lastrico", e in ebraico "Gabbata";

Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, `Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha;

14 o r era la preparazione della Pasqua, ed era circa l'ora sesta; e disse ai Giudei: «Ecco il vostro re».

and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, `Lo, your king!'

15 M a essi gridarono: «Via, via, crocifiggilo». Pilato disse loro: «Crocifiggerò il vostro re?». I capi dei sacerdoti risposero: «Noi non abbiamo altro re che Cesare».

and they cried out, `Take away, take away, crucify him;' Pilate saith to them, `Your king shall I crucify?' the chief priests answered, `We have no king except Caesar.'

16 A llora egli lo diede nelle loro mani affinché fosse crocifisso. Ed essi presero Gesú e lo condussero via.

Then, therefore, he delivered him up to them, that he may be crucified, and they took Jesus and led away,

17 E d egli, portando la sua croce, si avviò verso il luogo detto "del Teschio" che in ebraico si chiama "Golgota",

and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha;

18 d ove lo crocifissero, e con lui due altri, uno di qua e l'altro di là, e Gesú nel mezzo.

where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst.

19 O r Pilato fece anche un'iscrizione e la pose sulla croce, e vi era scritto: "GESU' IL NAZARENO, IL RE DEI GIUDEI".

And Pilate also wrote a title, and put on the cross, and it was written, `Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;'

20 C osí molti dei Giudei lessero questa iscrizione, perché il luogo dove Gesú fu crocifisso era vicino alla città, e quella era scritta in ebraico, in greco e in latino.

this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman.

21 P erciò i capi dei sacerdoti dei Giudei dissero a Pilato: «Non scrivere: "Il re dei Giudei", ma che egli ha detto: "Io sono il re dei Giudei".

The chief priests of the Jews said, therefore, to Pilate, `Write not -- The king of the Jews, but that one said, I am king of the Jews;'

22 P ilato rispose: «Ciò che ho scritto, ho scritto».

Pilate answered, `What I have written, I have written.'

23 O r i soldati, quando ebbero crocifisso Gesú, presero le sue vesti e ne fecero quattro parti, una parte per ciascun soldato, e la tunica. Ma la tunica era senza cuciture, tessuta d'un sol pezzo da cima a fondo.

The soldiers, therefore, when they did crucify Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout,

24 D issero dunque fra di loro: «Non stracciamola, ma tiriamola a sorte per decidere di chi sarà»; e ciò affinché si adempisse la Scrittura, che dice: «Hanno spartito fra di loro le mie vesti, e hanno tirato a sorte la mia tunica». I soldati dunque fecero queste cose.

they said, therefore, to one another, `We may not rend it, but cast a lot for it, whose it shall be;' that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, `They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my raiment they did cast a lot;' the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things.

25 O r presso la croce di Gesú stavano sua madre e la sorella di sua madre, Maria di Cleopa e Maria Maddalena.

And there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene;

26 G esú allora, vedendo sua madre e presso di lei il discepolo che egli amava, disse a sua madre: «Donna, ecco tuo figlio!».

Jesus, therefore, having seen mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he was loving, he saith to his mother, `Woman, lo, thy son;'

27 P oi disse al discepolo: «Ecco tua madre!». E da quel momento il discepolo l'accolse in casa sua.

afterward he saith to the disciple, `Lo, thy mother;' and from that hour the disciple took her to his own.

28 D opo questo, sapendo Gesú che ogni cosa era ormai compiuta, affinché si adempisse la Scrittura, disse: «Ho sete».

After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, `I thirst;'

29 O r c'era là un vaso pieno d'aceto. Inzuppata dunque una spugna nell'aceto e postala in cima ad un ramo d'issopo gliela accostarono alla bocca.

a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put around a hyssop stalk, did put to his mouth;

30 Q uando Gesú ebbe preso l'aceto disse: «E' compiuto». E, chinato il capo, rese lo spirito.

when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, `It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.

31 O r i Giudei, essendo il giorno di Preparazione, affinché i corpi non rimanessero sulla croce il sabato, perché quel sabato era un giorno di particolare importanza, chiesero a Pilato che fossero loro spezzate le gambe e fossero portati via.

The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for that sabbath day was a great one,) asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they taken away.

32 I soldati dunque vennero e spezzarono le gambe al primo e poi anche all'altro, che era crocifisso con lui;

The soldiers, therefore, came, and of the first indeed they did break the legs, and of the other who was crucified with him,

33 m a, arrivati a Gesú, come videro che era già morto, non gli spezzarono le gambe,

and having come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs;

34 m a uno dei soldati gli trafisse il costato con una lancia, e subito ne uscí sangue ed acqua.

but one of the soldiers with a spear did pierce his side, and immediately there came forth blood and water;

35 E colui che ha visto ne ha reso testimonianza e la sua testimonianza è verace, ed egli sa che dice il vero, affinché voi crediate.

and he who hath seen hath testified, and his testimony is true, and that one hath known that true things he speaketh, that ye also may believe.

36 Q ueste cose infatti sono accadute affinché si adempisse la Scrittura: «Non gli sarà spezzato alcun osso».

For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, `A bone of him shall not be broken;'

37 E ancora un'altra Scrittura dice: «Volgeranno lo sguardo a colui che hanno trafitto».

and again another Writing saith, `They shall look to him whom they did pierce.'

38 D opo queste cose, Giuseppe d'Arimatea che era discepolo di Gesú, ma di nascosto per timore dei Giudei, chiese a Pilato di poter prendere il corpo di Gesú; e Pilato glielo permise. Egli dunque venne e prese il corpo di Gesú.

And after these things did Joseph of Arimathea -- being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews -- ask of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus,

39 O r venne anche Nicodemo, che in precedenza era andato di notte da Gesú, portando una mistura di mirra e di aloe di circa cento libbre.

and Nicodemus also came -- who came unto Jesus by night at the first -- bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds.

40 E ssi dunque presero il corpo di Gesú e lo avvolsero in panni di lino con gli aromi, secondo il costume di sepoltura in uso presso i Giudei.

They took, therefore, the body of Jesus, and bound it with linen clothes with the spices, according as it was the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial;

41 O r nel luogo dove egli fu crocifisso c'era un orto, e nell'orto un sepolcro nuovo nel quale non era ancora stato posto nessuno.

and there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was yet laid;

42 L í dunque, a motivo del giorno di Preparazione dei Giudei, misero Gesú perché il sepolcro era vicino.

there, therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was nigh, they laid Jesus.
