1 A l tempo di Assuero, (quell'Assuero che regnava dall'India fino all'Etiopia sopra centoventisette province),

And it cometh to pass, in the days of Ahasuerus -- he Ahasuerus who is reigning from Hodu even unto Cush, seven and twenty and a hundred provinces --

2 i n quel tempo, quando il re Assuero sedeva sul trono del suo regno che era nella cittadella di Susa,

in those days, at the sitting of the king Ahasuerus on the throne of his kingdom, that in Shushan the palace,

3 n ell'anno terzo del suo regno, fece un banchetto per tutti i suoi principi e servi; i capi dell'esercito di Persia e di Media, i nobili e i principi delle province furono riuniti davanti a lui.

in the third year of his reign, he hath made a banquet to all his heads and his servants; of the force of Persia and Media, the chiefs and heads of the provinces before him,

4 E gli allora mostrò le ricchezze e la gloria del suo regno e lo splendore e l'eccellenza della sua maestà per molti giorni, centottanta giorni.

in his shewing the wealth of the honour of his kingdom, and the glory of the beauty of his greatness, many days -- eighty and a hundred days.

5 T rascorsi questi giorni, il re fece un altro banchetto di sette giorni, nel cortile del giardino del palazzo reale, per tutto il popolo che si trovava nella cittadella di Susa, dal piú grande al piú piccolo.

And at the fulness of these days hath the king made to all the people who are found in Shushan the palace, from great even unto small, a banquet, seven days, in the court of the garden of the house of the king --

6 C 'erano tende bianche e violacee, sospese con cordoni di bisso e di scarlatto ad anelli d'argento e a colonne di marmo. C'erano divani d'oro e d'argento su un pavimento di marmo rosso e bianco, di madreperla e di alabastro.

white linen, white cotton, and blue, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple on rings of silver, and pillars of marble, couches of gold, and of silver, on a pavement of smaragdus, and white marble, and mother-of-pearl, and black marble --

7 S i porgeva da bere in vasi d'oro, uno diverso dall'altro, e c'era vino reale in abbondanza, grazie alla liberalità del re.

and the giving of drink in vessels of gold, and the vessels divers vessels, and the royal wine abundant, as a memorial of the king.

8 I n base alla legge nessuno era obbligato a bere, il re infatti aveva ordinato a tutti i funzionari della sua casa di servire a ognuno quel che voleva.

And the drinking according to law, none is pressing, for so hath the king appointed for every chief one of his house, to do according to the pleasure of man and man.

9 A nche la regina Vashti fece un banchetto per le donne nella reggia del re Assuero. La regina Vashti viene deposta, in seguito al suo rifiuto di ubbidire all'ordine del re

Also Vashti the queen hath made a banquet for women, in the royal house that the king Ahasuerus hath.

10 I l settimo giorno, quando il cuore del re era allegro per il vino, egli ordinò a Mehuman, a Biztha, a Harbona, a Bigtha, ad Abagtha, a Zethar e a Karkas, i sette eunuchi che servivano alla presenza del re Assuero,

On the seventh day, as the heart of the king is glad with wine, he hath said to Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven eunuchs who are ministering in the presence of the king Ahasuerus,

11 d i far venire davanti al re la regina Vashti con la corona reale, per mostrare al popolo e ai principi la sua bellezza; ella infatti era di bell'aspetto.

to bring in Vashti the queen before the king, with a royal crown, to shew the peoples and the heads her beauty, for she of good appearance,

12 M a la regina Vashti rifiutò di venire secondo l'ordine del re trasmessole per mezzo degli eunuchi; il re ne fu irritatissimo e l'ira si accese dentro di lui.

and the queen Vashti refuseth to come in at the word of the king that by the hand of the eunuchs, and the king is very wroth, and his fury hath burned in him.

13 A llora il re interrogò i sapienti che conoscevano i tempi (questo infatti era il modo di procedere del re nei confronti di tutti quelli che conoscevano la legge e la giustizia;

And the king saith to wise men, knowing the times -- for so the word of the king before all knowing law and judgment,

14 i piú vicini a lui erano Karscena, Scethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena e Memukan, sette principi di Persia e di Media che erano ammessi alla presenza del re e occupavano i primi posti nel regno):

and he who is near unto him Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, Memucan, seven heads of Persia and Media seeing the face of the king, who are sitting first in the kingdom --

15 « Secondo la legge, che cosa si deve fare alla regina Vashti, che non ha eseguito l'ordine del re Assuero trasmessole per mezzo degli eunuchi?».

`According to law, what -- to do with queen Vashti, because that she hath not done the saying of the king Ahasuerus by the hand of the eunuchs?'

16 M emukan rispose davanti al re e ai principi: «La regina Vashti ha mancato non soltanto nei riguardi del re, ma anche nei riguardi di tutti i principi e di tutti i popoli che sono in tutte le province del re Assuero.

And Memucan saith before the king and the heads, `Not against the king by himself hath Vashti the queen done perversely, but against all the heads, and against all the peoples that in all provinces of the king Ahasuerus;

17 I l comportamento della regina verrà risaputo da tutte le donne, che saranno indotte a disprezzare i loro mariti e a dire: "Il re Assuero aveva ordinato che si conducesse alla sua presenza la regina Vashti, ma ella non vi è andata"

for go forth doth the word of the queen unto all the women, to render their husbands contemptible in their eyes, in their saying, The king Ahasuerus said to bring in Vashti the queen before him, and she did not come;

18 Q uest'oggi stesso le principesse di Persia e di Media, che hanno saputo del comportamento della regina, ne parleranno a tutti i principi del re e ne nascerà un gran disprezzo e sdegno.

yea, this day do princesses of Persia and Media, who have heard the word of the queen, say to all heads of the king, even according to the sufficiency of contempt and wrath.

19 S e sembra bene al re, emani egli un editto reale da inserire nelle leggi di Persia e di Media e sia irrevocabile, in forza del quale Vashti non compaia piú alla presenza del re Assuero; il re conferisca quindi la sua posizione reale ad un'altra migliore di lei.

`If to the king good, there goeth forth a royal word from before him, and it is written with the laws of Persia and Media, and doth not pass away, that Vashti doth not come in before the king Ahasuerus, and her royalty doth the king give to her companion who better than she;

20 Q uando l'editto emanato dal re sarà diffuso nell'intero suo regno, che è vasto, tutte le donne renderanno onore ai loro mariti dal piú grande al piú piccolo».

and the sentence of the king that he maketh hath been heard in all his kingdom -- for it great -- and all the wives give honour to their husbands, from great even unto small.'

21 L a proposta piacque al re e ai principi, e il re fece come aveva detto Memukan;

And the thing is good in the eyes of the king, and of the princes, and the king doth according to the word of Memucan,

22 m andò lettere a tutte le province del regno, ogni provincia secondo la sua scrittura e a ogni popolo secondo la sua lingua, affinché ogni uomo fosse padrone in casa sua e parlasse la lingua del suo popolo.

and sendeth letters unto all provinces of the king, unto province and province according to its writing, and unto people and people according to its tongue, for every man being head in his own house -- and speaking according to the language of his people.
