1 G iacobbe alzò gli occhi, guardò e vide arrivare Esaú, che aveva con sé quattrocento uomini. Allora divise i figli fra Lea, Rachele e le due serve.

And Jacob lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, Esau is coming, and with him four hundred men; and he divideth the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two maid-servants;

2 I n testa mise le serve e i loro figli, poi Lea e i suoi figli, e da ultimo Rachele e Giuseppe.

and he setteth the maid-servants and their children first, and Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.

3 E gli stesso passò davanti a loro e s'inchinò fino a terra sette volte, finché giunse vicino a suo fratello.

And he himself passed over before them, and boweth himself to the earth seven times, until his drawing nigh unto his brother,

4 A llora Esaú gli corse incontro, l'abbracciò, gli si gettò al collo e lo baciò; e piansero.

and Esau runneth to meet him, and embraceth him, and falleth on his neck, and kisseth him, and they weep;

5 P oi Esaú alzò gli occhi e vide le donne e i fanciulli, e disse: «Chi sono questi con te?». Giacobbe rispose: «Sono i figli che DIO si è compiaciuto di dare al tuo servo».

and he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the women and the children, and saith, `What these to thee?' And he saith, `The children with whom God hath favoured thy servant.'

6 A llora si avvicinarono le serve, esse e i loro figli, e s'inchinarono.

And the maid-servants draw nigh, they and their children, and bow themselves;

7 S i avvicinarono anche Lea e i suoi figli, e s'inchinarono. Poi si avvicinarono Giuseppe e Rachele, e s'inchinarono.

and Leah also draweth nigh, and her children, and they bow themselves; and afterwards Joseph hath drawn nigh with Rachel, and they bow themselves.

8 E saú disse: «Che vuoi fare di tutta quella schiera che ho incontrato?». Giacobbe rispose: «E' per trovare grazia agli occhi del mio signore».

And he saith, `What to thee all this camp which I have met?' and he saith, `To find grace in the eyes of my lord.'

9 A llora Esaú disse: «Ne ho già abbastanza, fratello mio; tieni per te ciò che è tuo».

And Esau saith, `I have abundance, my brother, let it be to thyself that which thou hast.'

10 M a Giacobbe disse: No, ti prego; se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, accetta il mio dono dalla mia mano, perché vedere la tua faccia, per me è stato come vedere la faccia di DIO, e tu mi hai fatto una buona accoglienza.

And Jacob saith, `Nay, I pray thee, if, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, then thou hast received my present from my hand, because that I have seen thy face, as the seeing of the face of God, and thou art pleased with me;

11 D eh, accetta il mio dono che ti è stato recato, perché DIO mi ha usato grande bontà, e perché ho tutto». E insisté tanto, che Esaú accettò.

receive, I pray thee, my blessing, which is brought to thee, because God hath favoured me, and because I have all;' and he presseth on him, and he receiveth,

12 P oi Esaú disse: «Partiamo, incamminiamoci e io andrò davanti a te».

and saith, `Let us journey and go on, and I go on before thee.'

13 M a Giacobbe rispose: «Il mio signore sa che i fanciulli sono di tenera età e che ho con me delle pecore e delle mucche che allattano; se le fanno strapazzare anche un solo giorno, tutte le bestie moriranno.

And he saith unto him, `My lord knoweth that the children tender, and the suckling flock and the herd with me; when they have beaten them one day, then hath all the flock died.

14 D eh, passi il mio signore prima del suo servo, e io me ne verrò pian piano, al passo del bestiame che mi precede e al passo dei fanciulli, finché arrivi presso al mio signore, a Seir».

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant, and I -- I lead on gently, according to the foot of the work which before me, and to the foot of the children, until that I come unto my lord, to Seir.'

15 E saú allora disse: «Permetti almeno che io lasci con te un po' della gente che ho con me». Ma Giacobbe rispose: «Perché fare ciò? Basta che io trovi grazia agli occhi del mio signore».

And Esau saith, `Let me, I pray thee, place with thee some of the people who with me;' and he said, `Why this? I find grace in the eyes of my lord.'

16 C osì, in quel giorno stesso, Esaú ritornò sul suo cammino verso Seir.

And turn back on that day doth Esau on his way to Seir;

17 G iacobbe partì alla volta di Sukkoth, costruì una casa per sé e fece delle capanne per il suo bestiame; perciò quel luogo fu chiamato Sukkoth.

and Jacob hath journeyed to Succoth, and buildeth to himself a house, and for his cattle hath made booths, therefore hath he called the name of the place Succoth.

18 P oi Giacobbe, tornando da Paddan-Aram, arrivò sano e salvo alla città di Sichem, nel paese di Canaan, e piantò le tende di fronte alla città.

And Jacob cometh in to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and encampeth before the city,

19 E comprò dai figli di Hamor, padre di Sichem, per cento pezzi di denaro, la parte del campo dove aveva piantato le sue tende.

and he buyeth the portion of the field where he hath stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred kesitah;

20 P oi là eresse un altare e lo chiamò El-Elohey-Israel.

and he setteth up there an altar, and proclaimeth at it God -- the God of Israel.
