1 P oiché molti hanno intrapreso ad esporre ordinatamente la narrazione delle cose che si sono verificate in mezzo a noi,

Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,

2 c ome ce le hanno trasmesse coloro che da principio ne furono testimoni oculari e ministri della parola,

as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, --

3 è parso bene anche a me, dopo aver indagato ogni cosa accuratamente fin dall'inizio, di scrivertene per ordine, eccellentissimo Teofilo,

it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,

4 a ffinché tu riconosca la certezza delle cose che ti sono state insegnate.

that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5 A i giorni di Erode, re della Giudea, vi era un certo sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della classe di Abia; sua moglie era discendente da Aaronne e si chiamava Elisabetta.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;

6 E rano entrambi giusti agli occhi di Dio, camminando irreprensibili in tutti i comandamenti e le leggi del Signore.

and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,

7 M a non avevano figli, perché Elisabetta era sterile, ed entrambi erano già avanzati in età.

and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.

8 O r avvenne che, mentre Zaccaria esercitava il suo ufficio sacerdotale davanti a Dio nell'ordine della sua classe,

And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,

9 s econdo l'usanza del servizio sacerdotale, gli toccò in sorte di entrare nel tempio del Signore per bruciare l'incenso.

according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,

10 I ntanto l'intera folla del popolo stava fuori in preghiera, nell'ora dell'incenso.

and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.

11 A llora un angelo del Signore gli apparve, stando in piedi alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso.

And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,

12 A l vederlo Zaccaria fu turbato e preso da paura,

and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;

13 M a l'angelo gli disse: «Non temere Zaccaria, perché la tua preghiera è stata esaudita e tua moglie Elisabetta ti partorirà un figlio, al quale porrai nome Giovanni.

and the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,

14 E d egli sarà per te motivo di gioia e di allegrezza, e molti si rallegreranno per la sua nascita.

and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,

15 P erché egli sarà grande davanti al Signore; non berrà né vino né bevande inebrianti e sarà ripieno di Spirito Santo fin dal grembo di sua madre.

for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;

16 E convertirà molti dei figli d'Israele al Signore, loro Dio.

and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,

17 E d andrà davanti a lui nello spirito e potenza di Elia, per ricondurre i cuori dei padri verso i figli e i ribelli alla saggezza dei giusti, per preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto».

and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'

18 E Zaccaria disse all'angelo: «Da che cosa conoscerò questo? Poiché io sono vecchio e mia moglie è avanzata negli anni».

And Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'

19 E l'angelo, rispondendo, gli disse: «Io sono Gabriele che sto alla presenza di Dio, e sono stato mandato per parlarti e annunziarti queste buone novelle.

And the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,

20 E d ecco, tu sarai muto e non potrai parlare fino al giorno in cui queste cose avverranno, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole che si adempiranno a loro tempo».

and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'

21 I ntanto il popolo aspettava Zaccaria e si meravigliava che egli si trattenesse cosí a lungo nel tempio.

And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,

22 M a, quando uscí, non poteva parlare loro; allora essi compresero che egli aveva avuto una visione nel tempio; egli faceva loro dei cenni, ma rimase muto.

and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.

23 E avvenne che, quando furono compiuti i giorni del suo servizio, egli ritornò a casa sua.

And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,

24 O ra, dopo quei giorni, sua moglie Elisabetta concepí; e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi e diceva:

and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying --

25 « Ecco cosa mi ha fatto il Signore nei giorni, in cui ha volto il suo sguardo su di me per rimuovere la mia vergogna tra gli uomini».

`Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon, to take away my reproach among men.'

26 N el sesto mese, l'angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea, chiamata Nazaret,

And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which Nazareth,

27 a d una vergine fidanzata a un uomo di nome Giuseppe, della casa di Davide; e il nome della vergine era Maria.

to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin Mary.

28 E l'angelo, entrato da lei, disse: «Salve, o grandemente favorita, il Signore è con te; tu sei benedetta fra le donne»

And the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord with thee; blessed thou among women;'

29 M a quando lo vide, ella rimase turbata alle sue parole, e si domandava cosa potesse significare un tale saluto.

and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.

30 E l'angelo le disse: «Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio.

And the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;

31 E d ecco, tu concepirai nel grembo e partorirai un figlio, e gli porrai nome Gesú.

and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;

32 E gli sarà grande e sarà chiamato Figlio dell'Altissimo; e il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di Davide, suo padre;

he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,

33 e regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno, e il suo regno non avrà mai fine».

and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'

34 E Maria disse all'angelo: «Come avverrà questo, poiché io non conosco uomo?».

And Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'

35 E l'angelo, rispondendo, le disse: «Lo Spirito Santo verrà su di te e la potenza dell'Altissimo ti adombrerà, pertanto il santo che nascerà da te sarà chiamato figlio di Dio.

And the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;

36 E d ecco Elisabetta, tua parente, ha anch'ella concepito un figlio nella sua vecchiaia; e questo è il sesto mese per lei, che era chiamata sterile

and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;

37 p oiché nulla è impossibile con Dio».

because nothing shall be impossible with God.'

38 A llora Maria disse: «Ecco la serva del Signore; mi sia fatto secondo la tua parola». E l'angelo si allontanò da lei.

And Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.

39 O ra in quei giorni Maria si levò e si recò in fretta nella regione montuosa, in una città di Giuda,

And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,

40 e d entrò in casa di Zaccaria e salutò Elisabetta.

and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41 E avvenne che, appena Elisabetta udì il saluto di Maria, il bambino le sobbalzò nel grembo, ed Elisabetta fu ripiena di Spirito Santo,

And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

42 e d esclamò a gran voce, dicendo: «Tu sei benedetta fra le donne e benedetto è il frutto del tuo grembo.

and spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed thou among women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb;

43 E perché mi accade questo, che la madre del mio Signore venga a me?

and whence this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?

44 P oiché, ecco, appena la voce del tuo saluto mi è giunta agli orecchi, il bambino è sobbalzato di gioia nel mio grembo.

for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;

45 O ra, beata è colei che ha creduto, perché le cose dettele da parte del Signore avranno compimento».

and happy she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'

46 E Maria disse: «L'anima mia magnifica il Signore,

And Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 e lo spirito mio esulta in Dio, mio Salvatore,

And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,

48 p erché egli ha avuto riguardo alla bassezza della sua serva, poiché ecco d'ora in poi tutte le generazioni mi proclameranno beata,

Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,

49 p erché il Potente mi ha fatto cose grandi, e Santo è il suo nome!

For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy His name,

50 E la sua misericordia si estende di generazione in generazione verso coloro che lo temono.

And His kindness to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,

51 E gli ha operato potentemente col suo braccio; ha disperso i superbi nei pensieri del loro cuore;

He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,

52 h a rovesciato i potenti dai loro troni ed ha innalzato gli umili

He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,

53 h a ricolmato di beni gli affamati e ha rimandato i ricchi a mani vuote.

The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,

54 E gli ha soccorso Israele, suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia

He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,

55 c ome aveva dichiarato ai nostri padri, ad Abrahamo e alla sua progenie, per sempre».

As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed -- to the age.'

56 E Maria rimase con Elisabetta circa tre mesi, poi se ne tornò a casa sua.

And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.

57 O ra giunse per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire, e diede alla luce un figlio.

And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,

58 I suoi vicini e i parenti, udendo che il Signore le aveva usato grande misericordia, si rallegrarono con lei.

and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.

59 E d avvenne che nell'ottavo giorno vennero per circoncidere il bambino e intendevano chiamarlo Zaccaria, col nome di suo padre;

And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,

60 m a sua madre intervenne e disse: «No, si chiamerà invece Giovanni».

and his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.'

61 E d essi le dissero: «Non vi è alcuno nella tua parentela che si chiami con questo nome».

And they said unto her -- `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'

62 C osí domandarono con cenni a suo padre, come voleva che lo si chiamasse.

and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,

63 E gli allora chiese una tavoletta e vi scrisse: «Il suo nome è Giovanni». E tutti si meravigliarono.

and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;' and they did all wonder;

64 I n quell'istante la sua bocca si aperse e la sua lingua si sciolse, e parlava benedicendo Dio.

and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.

65 E tutti i loro vicini furono presi da timore, e tutte queste cose erano divulgate per tutta la regione montuosa della Giudea.

And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,

66 E tutti coloro che le udirono, le riposero nel cuore loro, dicendo: «Chi sarà mai questo bambino?». E la mano del Signore era con lui.

and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 E Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ripieno di Spirito Santo e profetizzò, dicendo:

And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,

68 « Benedetto sia il Signore Dio d'Israele, perché ha visitato e compiuto la redenzione per il suo popolo;

`Blessed the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,

69 e ci ha suscitato una potente salvezza nella casa di Davide suo servo

And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,

70 c ome egli aveva dichiarato per bocca dei suoi santi profeti fin dai tempi antichi, perché fossimo salvati

As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;

71 d ai nostri nemici e dalle mani di tutti coloro che ci odiano,

Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,

72 p er usare misericordia verso i nostri padri e ricordarsi del suo santo patto,

To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,

73 i l giuramento fatto ad Abrahamo nostro padre,

An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,

74 p er concederci che, liberati dalle mani dei nostri nemici, lo potessimo servire senza paura,

To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,

75 i n santità e giustizia davanti a lui tutti i giorni della nostra vita.

To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.

76 E tu, o piccolo bambino, sarai chiamato profeta dell'Altissimo, perché tu andrai davanti alla faccia del Signore a preparare le sue vie,

And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.

77 p er dare al suo popolo la conoscenza della salvezza, nel perdono dei loro peccati;

To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,

78 g razie alle viscere di misericordia de nostro Dio, per cui l'aurora dall'alto ci visiterà,

Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,

79 p er illuminare quelli che giacevano nelle tenebre e nell'ombra della morte, per guidare i nostri passi nella via della pace».

To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'

80 I ntanto il bambino cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito, e rimase nei deserti fino al giorno che egli doveva manifestarsi ad Israele.

And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
