1 Q uando Adoni-Tsedek, re di Gerusalemme, seppe che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l'aveva votata allo sterminio, e che aveva fatto ad Ai e al suo re quel che aveva fatto a Gerico e al suo re, e che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto pace con gl'Israeliti ed erano in mezzo a loro,

And it cometh to pass, when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heareth that Joshua hath captured Ai, and doth devote it (as he had done to Jericho and to her king so he hath done to Ai and to her king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon have made peace with Israel, and are in their midst, --

2 f u preso da grande paura, perché Gabaon era una grande città come una delle città regali e perché era piú grande di Ai, e tutti i suoi uomini erano valorosi.

that they are greatly afraid, because Gibeon a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it greater than Ai, and all its men -- heroes.

3 P erciò Adoni-Tsedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Hoham re di Hebron, a Piram re di Jarmuth, a Jafia re di Lakish e a Debir re di Eglon, dicendo:

And Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sendeth unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 « Salite da me e aiutatemi ad attaccare Gabaon, perché ha fatto pace con Giosuè e con i figli d'Israele».

`Come up unto me, and help me, and we smite Gibeon, for it hath made peace with Joshua, and with the sons of Israel.'

5 C osì i cinque re degli Amorei il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron il re di Jarmuth, il re di Lakish e il re di Eglon si radunarono, salirono con tutti i loro eserciti, si accamparono di fronte a Gabaon e l'attaccarono.

And five kings of the Amorite (the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon) are gathered together, and go up, they and all their camps, and encamp against Gibeon, and fight against it.

6 A llora i Gabaoniti mandarono a dire a Giosuè, al campo di Ghilgal: «Non negare il tuo aiuto ai tuoi servi; affrettati a salire da noi, salvaci ed aiutaci, perché tutti i re degli Amorei che abitano nella regione montuosa si sono radunati contro di noi».

And the men of Gibeon send unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, saying, `Let not thy hand cease from thy servants; come up unto us haste, and give safety to us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorite, dwelling in the hill-country, have been assembled against us.'

7 C osì Giosuè salì da Ghilgal, lui con tutti gli uomini di guerra, tutti i guerrieri valorosi.

And Joshua goeth up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, even all the mighty men of valour.

8 L 'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Non aver paura di loro, perché li ho dati nelle tue mani; nessuno di loro potrà resisterti».

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Be not afraid of them, for into thy hand I have given them, there doth not stand a man of them in thy presence.'

9 C osì Giosuè piombò loro addosso all'improvviso perché aveva marciato tutta la notte da Ghilgal.

And Joshua cometh in unto them suddenly (all the night he hath gone up from Gilgal),

10 C osi l'Eterno li mise in rotta davanti ad Israele, gl'inflisse una grande sconfitta presso Gabaon, li inseguì per la via che sale a Beth-Horon e li battè fino ad Azekah e a Makkedah.

and Jehovah doth crush them before Israel, and it smiteth them -- a great smiting -- at Gibeon, and pursueth them the way of the ascent of Beth-Horon, and smiteth them unto Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11 M entre fuggivano davanti a Israele e erano alla discesa di Beth-Horon, l'Eterno scagliò su di loro dal cielo delle grosse pietre fino ad Azekah, ed essi perirono; quelli che morirono per la grandinata di pietre furono piú numerosi di quelli che i figli d'Israele uccisero con la spada.

And it cometh to pass, in their fleeing from the face of Israel -- they in the descent of Beth-Horon -- and Jehovah hath cast upon them great stones out of the heavens, unto Azekah, and they die; more are they who have died by the hailstones than they whom the sons of Israel have slain by the sword.

12 I l giorno che l'Eterno diede gli Amorei nelle mani dei figli d'Israele, Giosuè parlò all'Eterno e disse in presenza d'Israele: «Sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, luna, sulla valle di Ajalon!».

Then speaketh Joshua to Jehovah in the day of Jehovah's giving up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he saith, before the eyes of Israel, `Sun -- in Gibeon stand still; and moon -- in the valley of Ajalon;'

13 C osì il sole si fermò e la luna si arrestò, finché il popolo si fu vendicato dei suoi nemici. Questo non sta forse scritto nel libro del Giusto? Così il sole si fermò in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare per quasi un giorno intero.

and the sun standeth still, and the moon hath stood -- till the nation taketh vengeance its enemies; is it not written on the Book of the Upright, `and the sun standeth in the midst of the heavens, and hath not hasted to go in -- as a perfect day?'

14 E non ci fu mai, né prima né dopo, un giorno come quello, in cui l'Eterno abbia esaudito la voce di un uomo, perché l'Eterno combatté per Israele.

And there hath not been like that day before it or after it, for Jehovah's hearkening to the voice of a man; for Jehovah is fighting for Israel.

15 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, ritornò all'accampamento di Ghilgal.

And Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.

16 M a quei cinque re erano fuggiti e si erano nascosti nella caverna di Makkedah.

And these five kings flee, and are hidden in a cave at Makkedah,

17 L a cosa fu riferita a Giosuè e gli fu detto: «I cinque re sono stati trovati nascosti nella caverna di Makkedahii.

and it is declared to Joshua, saying, `The five kings have been found hidden in a cave at Makkedah.'

18 A llora Giosuè disse: «Rotolate grosse pietre contro l'entrata della caverna e mettetevi degli uomini a far loro guardia.

And Joshua saith, `Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and appoint over it men to watch them;

19 V oi però non fermatevi, ma inseguite i vostri nemici e colpite le retroguardie; non permettete loro di entrare nelle loro città, perché l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, li ha dati nelle vostre mani».

and ye, stand not, pursue after your enemies, and ye have smitten the hindmost of them; suffer them not to go in unto their cities, for Jehovah your God hath given them into your hand.'

20 Q uando Giosuè e i figli d'Israele ebbero terminato di sterminarli con un grande massacro fino ad annientarli, e i loro superstiti che sfuggirono si furono rifugiati nelle città fortificate,

And it cometh to pass, when Joshua and the sons of Israel finish to smite them -- a very great smiting, till they are consumed, and the remnant who have remained of them go in unto the fenced cities,

21 t utto il popolo ritornò sano e salvo da Giosuè all'accampamento di Makkedah. Nessuno osò muovere la lingua contro alcuno dei figli d'Israele.

that all the people turn back to the camp, unto Joshua, Makkedah, in peace; none moved sharply his tongue against the sons of Israel.

22 A llora Giosuè disse: «Aprite l'ingresso della caverna, tirate fuori dalla caverna quei cinque re e conduceteli da me».

And Joshua saith, `Open ye the mouth of the cave, and bring out unto me these five kings from the cave;'

23 C osì fecero; tirarono fuori dalla caverna quei cinque re, e li condussero da lui, cioè: il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Jarmuth, il re di Lakish e il re di Eglon.

and they do so, and bring out unto him these five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

24 Q uando quei re furono tirati fuori e condotti da Giosuè, Giosuè chiamò tutti gli uomini d'Israele e disse ai capi degli uomini di guerra che erano andati con lui: «Avvicinatevi e mettete i vostri piedi sul collo di questi re». Essi si avvicinarono e misero i loro piedi sul loro collo.

And it cometh to pass, when they bring out these kings unto Joshua, that Joshua calleth unto every man of Israel, and saith unto the captains of the men of war, who have gone with him, `Draw near, set your feet on the necks of these kings;' and they draw near, and set their feet on their necks.

25 Q uindi Giosuè disse loro: «Non abbiate paura, non sgomentatevi, siate forti e coraggiosi, perché così farà l'Eterno a tutti i vostri nemici, contro cui dovete combattere».

And Joshua saith unto them, `Fear not, nor be affrighted; be strong and courageous; for thus doth Jehovah do to all your enemies with whom ye are fighting;'

26 D opo di ciò Giosuè li percosse e li fece morire, quindi li fece appendere a cinque alberi, sui quali rimasero appesi fino a sera.

and Joshua smiteth them afterwards, and putteth them to death, and hangeth them on five trees; and they are hanging on the trees till the evening.

27 A l tramontar del sole, Giosuè ordinò di calarli dagli alberi e di gettarli nella caverna dove si erano nascosti; poi all'ingresso della caverna misero delle grosse pietre, che sono rimaste là fino al giorno d'oggi.

And it cometh to pass, at the time of the going in of the sun, Joshua hath commanded, and they take them down from off the trees, and cast them unto the cave where they had been hid, and put great stones on the mouth of the cave till this very day.

28 I n quello stesso giorno Giosuè prese Makkedah e la passò a fil di spada con il suo re; li votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non vi lasciò neppure un superstite e trattò il re di Makkedah come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.

And Makkedah hath Joshua captured on that day, and he smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and its king he hath devoted, them and every person who in it -- he hath not left a remnant; and he doth to the king of Makkedah as he did to the king of Jericho.

29 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, passò da Makkedah a Libnah, e attaccò Libnah.

And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah Libnah, and fighteth with Libnah;

30 L 'Eterno diede anche questa città con il suo re nelle mani d'Israele; e Giosuè la passò a fil di spada con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non vi lasciò alcun superstite e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.

and Jehovah giveth also it into the hand of Israel, and its king, and it smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who in it -- it left not in it a remnant; and it doth to its king as it did to the king of Jericho.

31 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, passò da Libnah a Lakish; si accampò contro di essa e l'attaccò.

And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encampeth against it, and fighteth against it;

32 E l'Eterno diede Lakish nelle mani d'Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada, con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Libnah.

And Jehovah giveth Lachish into the hand of Israel, and it captureth it on the second day, and smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who in it, according to all that it did to Libnah.

33 A llora Horam, re di Ghezer, salì in aiuto di Lakish; ma Giosuè battè lui e il suo popolo fino a non lasciargli alcun superstite.

Than hath Horam king of Gezer come up to help Lachish, and Joshua smiteth him and his people, till he hath not left to him a remnant.

34 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, passò da Lakish a Eglon; si accamparono contro di essa e l'attaccarono.

And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and they encamp against it, and fight against it,

35 L a presero quello stesso giorno e la passarono a fil di spada. In quello stesso giorno Giosuè votò allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Lakish.

and capture it on that day, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who in it on that day he hath devoted, according to all that he did to Lachish.

36 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, salì da Eglon a Hebron e l'attaccarono.

And Joshua goeth up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fight against it,

37 L a presero e la passarono a fil di spada con il suo re, con tutte le sue città e con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non vi lasciò alcun superstite, esattamente come aveva fatto a Eglon; ma la votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano.

and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and every person who in it -- he hath not left a remnant -- according to all that he did to Eglon -- and doth devote it, and every person who in it.

38 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, tornò verso Debir e l'attaccò.

And Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fighteth against it,

39 L a prese con il suo re e con tutte le sue città; li passarono a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non vi lasciò alcun superstite. Egli trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Hebron, come aveva pure trattato Libnah e il suo re.

and captureth it, and its king, and all its cities, and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and devote every person who in it -- he hath not left a remnant; as he did to Hebron so he did to Debir, and to its king, and as he did to Libnah, and to its king.

40 G iosuè dunque battè tutto il paese, la regione montuosa, il Neghev, il bassopiano, le, pendici dei monti e tutti i loro re; non vi lasciò alcun superstite, ma votò allo sterminio tutto ciò che aveva vita, come l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, aveva comandato.

And Joshua smiteth all the land of the hill-country, and of the south, and of the low-country, and of the springs, and all their kings -- he hath not left a remnant, and all that doth breathe he hath devoted, as Jehovah, God of Israel, commanded.

41 C osì Giosuè li battè da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza e tutto il paese di Goscen fino a Gabaon.

And Joshua smiteth them from Kadesh-Barnea, even unto Gaza, and all the land of Goshen, even unto Gibeon;

42 I n una sola volta Giosuè prese tutti quei re e i loro paesi, perché l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, combatteva per Israele.

and all these kings and their land hath Joshua captured one time, for Jehovah, God of Israel, is fighting for Israel.

43 P oi Giosuè, e tutto Israele con lui, fece ritorno all'accampamento di Ghilgal.

and Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.
