1 O r gli uomini d'Israele avevano giurato a Mitspah, dicendo: «Nessuno di noi darà sua figlia in moglie a un Beniaminita».

And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, `None of us doth give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.'

2 P oi il popolo venne a Bethel, dove rimase fino a sera davanti a DIO; e alzò la voce e pianse dirottamente,

And the people come in to Beth-El, and sit there till the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep -- a great weeping,

3 e disse: «O Eterno, DIO d'Israele, perché mai è avvenuto questo in Israele, che oggi sia venuta a mancare una tribú in Israele.

and say, `Why, O Jehovah, God of Israel, hath this been in Israel -- to be lacking to-day, from Israel, one tribe?'

4 I l giorno seguente il popolo si levò al mattino presto, costruì in quel luogo un altare e offerse olocausti e sacrifici di ringraziamento.

And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that the people rise early, and build there an altar, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

5 P oi i figli d'Israele dissero: «Chi è fra tutte le tribú d'Israele, che non sia salito all'assemblea davanti all'Eterno?». Poiché avevano fatto un giuramento solenne contro chiunque non fosse salito davanti all'Eterno a Mitspah, dicendo: «Quel tale sarà messo a morte».

And the sons of Israel say, `Who he that hath not come up in the assembly out of all the tribes of Israel unto Jehovah?' for the great oath hath been concerning him who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh, saying, `He is surely put to death.'

6 I figli d'Israele erano addolorati per Beniamino loro fratello e dicevano: «Oggi è stata soppressa una tribú d'Israele.

And the sons of Israel repent concerning Benjamin their brother, and say, `There hath been to-day cut off one tribe from Israel,

7 C ome faremo a procurare delle donne ai superstiti, poiché abbiamo giurato nel nome dell'Eterno di non dare loro in moglie alcuna delle nostre figlie?».

what do we do for them -- for those who are left -- for wives, and we -- we have sworn by Jehovah not to give to them of our daughters for wives?'

8 D issero dunque: «Chi è fra le tribú d'Israele quella che non sia salita davanti all'Eterno a Mitspah?». Ed ecco che nessuno da Jabes i Galaad era venuto all'accampamento per l'assemblea;

And they say, `Who is one out of the tribes of Israel who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh?' and lo, none hath come in unto the camp from Jabesh-Gilead -- unto the assembly.

9 q uando infatti si passò in rassegna il popolo, si trovò che là non vi era alcuno degli abitanti di Jabes di Galaad.

And the people numbered themselves, and lo, there is not there a man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.

10 A llora l'assemblea mandò là dodicimila uomini dei piú valorosi e diede loro quest'ordine, dicendo: «Andate e passate a fil di spada gli abitanti di Jabes di Galaad, comprese le donne e i bambini.

And the company send there twelve thousand men of the sons of valour, and command them, saying, `Go -- and ye have smitten the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.

11 F arete questo: voterete allo sterminio ogni maschio e ogni donna che abbia avuto rapporti sessuali con uomo».

And this the thing which ye do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, ye devote.'

12 O r essi trovarono fra gli abitanti di Jabes di Galaad quattrocento fanciulle che non avevano avuto rapporti sessuali con uomo, e le condussero all'accampamento, a Sciloh, che è nel paese di Canaan.

And they find out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women, virgins, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them in unto the camp at Shiloh, which in the land of Canaan.

13 A llora tutta l'assemblea mandò messaggeri per parlare ai figli di Beniamino che erano al masso di Rimmon, e per proclamare loro la pace.

And all the company send, and speak, unto the sons of Benjamin who in the rock Rimmon, and proclaim to them peace;

14 C osì i Beniaminiti tornarono e furono loro date le donne a cui era stata risparmiata la vita fra le donne di Jabes di Galaad; ma non ve ne furono abbastanza per tutti.

and Benjamin turneth back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for them so.

15 I l popolo era addolorato per ciò che aveva fatto a Beniamino, perché l'Eterno aveva aperta una breccia fra le tribú d'Israele.

And the people repented concerning Benjamin, for Jehovah had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.

16 A llora gli anziani dell'assemblea dissero: «Come faremo a procurare delle donne ai superstiti, poiché le donne beniaminite sono state uccise?».

And the elders of the company say, `What do we do to the remnant for wives -- for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?'

17 P oi dissero: «I superstiti di Beniamino devono avere un'eredità, affinché non sia soppressa una tribú in Israele.

And they say, `A possession of an escaped party to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;

18 M a noi non possiamo dar loro in moglie le nostre figlie». Poiché i figli d'Israele avevano giurato, dicendo: «Maledetto chi darà una moglie a Beniamino!».

and we -- we are not able to give to them wives out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.'

19 A llora dissero: «Ecco, ogni anno si fa una festa in onore dell'Eterno a Sciloh, che è a nord di Bethel a est della strada che sale da Bethel a Sichem e a sud di Lebonah».

And they say, `Lo, a festival of Jehovah in Shiloh, from time to time, which on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.'

20 D iedero così quest'ordine ai figli di Beniamino, dicendo: «Andate e nascondetevi nelle vigne,

And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, `Go -- and ye have laid wait in the vineyards,

21 e state ad osservare; quando le figlie di Sciloh usciranno per danzare in coro, sbucherete dalle vigne, e ciascuno rapirà la propria donna tra le figlie di Sciloh; poi andrete nel paese di Beniamino.

and have seen, and lo, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances -- then ye have gone out from the vineyards, and caught for you each his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh, and gone to the land of Benjamin;

22 Q uando i loro padri o i loro fratelli verranno da noi a protestare, noi diremo loro: "Datecele per favore, poiché in questa guerra non abbiamo preso una donna per ciascuno di loro; or se non le date loro neppure in questo caso, voi sareste colpevoli"».

and it hath been, when their fathers or their brethren come in to plead unto us, that we have said unto them, Favour us them, for we have not taken each his wife in battle, for ye -- ye have not given to them at this time ye are guilty.'

23 I figli di Beniamino fecero così: si presero delle mogli, secondo il loro numero, fra le danzatrici; le rapirono, poi partirono e tornarono nella loro eredità, riedificarono le città e vi abitarono.

And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have taken violently away; and they go, and turn back unto their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.

24 I n quel medesimo tempo, i figli d'Israele se ne andarono di là, ciascuno nella sua tribú e nella sua famiglia, e di là ciascuno fece ritorno alla sua eredità.

And the sons of Israel go up and down thence at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they go out thence each to his inheritance.

25 I n quel tempo non c'era alcun re in Israele; ognuno Faceva ciò che sembrava giusto ai suoi occhi.

In those days there is no king in Israel; each doth that which is right in his own eyes.
