1 O ra Sarai, moglie di Abrahamo, non gli aveva dato alcun figlio. Ella aveva una serva egiziana di nome Agar.

And Sarai, Abram's wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name Hagar;

2 C osì Sarai disse ad Abramo: «ecco, l'Eterno mi ha impedito di avere figli; deh, entra dalla mia serva; forse potrò avere figli da lei». E Abramo diede ascolto alla voce di Sarai.

and Sarai saith unto Abram, `Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;' and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.

3 S arai dunque, moglie di Abramo, dopo che Abramo aveva dimorato dieci anni nel paese di Canaan, prese la sua serva Agar, l'Egiziana, e la diede in moglie ad Abramo suo marito.

And Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,

4 E d egli entrò da Agar, che rimase incinta; ma quando si accorse di essere incinta, guardó la sua padrona con disprezzo.

and he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

5 A llora Sarai disse ad Abramo: «La responsabilità per l'offesa fattami ricada su di te. Sono stata io a darti nelle braccia la mia serva; ma da quando si è accorta di essere incinta mi guarda con disprezzo. L'Eterno sia giudice fra me e te».

And Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence for thee; I -- I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'

6 A bramo rispose a Sarai: «Ecco, la tua serva è in tuo potere; fa' di lei ciò che ti pare». Sarai allora la trattó duramente, ed ella fuggì dalla sua presenza.

And Abram saith unto Sarai, `Lo, thine handmaid in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.

7 O ra l'Angelo dell'Eterno la trovò presso una sorgente d'acqua nel deserto, presso la sorgente sulla strada di Shur,

And a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way Shur,

8 e le disse: «Agar, serva di Sarai, da dove vieni e dove vai?». Ella rispose: «Me ne fuggo dalla presenza della mia padrona Sarai».

and he saith, `Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, `From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.'

9 A llora l'Angelo dell'Eterno le disse: «Torna dalla tua padrona, e sottomettiti alla sua autorità».

And the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'

10 P oi l'Angelo dell'Eterno soggiunse: «Io moltiplicheró grandemente la tua discendenza tanto che non la si potrà contare, a motivo del suo gran numero».

and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'

11 L 'Angelo dell'Eterno le disse ancora: «Ecco, tu sei incinta e partorirai un figlio, e lo chiamerai Ismaele, perché l'Eterno ha dato ascolto alla tua afflizione;

and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Behold thou conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

12 e gli sarà tra gli uomini come un asino selvatico; la sua mano sarà contro tutti e la mano di tutti contro di lui; e abiterà nella presenza di tutti i suoi fratelli».

and he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him -- and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'

13 A llora Agar chiamó il nome dell'Eterno che le aveva parlato: «Tu sei El-Roi», perché disse: «Ho veramente io veduto colui che mi vede?».

And she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, `Thou, O God, my beholder;' for she said, `Even here have I looked behind my beholder?'

14 P erciò quel pozzo fu chiamato "Il pozzo di Lahai-Roi. ecco, esso è fra Kadesh e Bered.

therefore hath one called the well, `The well of the Living One, my beholder;' lo, between Kadesh and Bered.

15 C osì Agar partorì un figlio ad Abramo; e Abramo chiamò il figlio, che Agar gli aveva partorito, col nome di Ismaele.

And Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;

16 A bramo aveva ottantasei anni, quando Agor partorì Ismaele ad Abramo.

and Abram a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.
