1 D opo queste cose, ricorreva una festa dei Giudei e Gesú salí a Gerusalemme.

After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

2 O r a Gerusalemme, vicino alla porta delle pecore, c'è una piscina detta in ebraico Betesda, che ha cinque portici.

and there is in Jerusalem by the sheep- a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches,

3 S otto questi giaceva un gran numero di infermi, ciechi, zoppi e paralitici, i quali aspettavano l'agitarsi dell'acqua.

in these were lying a great multitude of the ailing, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water,

4 P erché un angelo, in determinati momenti, scendeva nella piscina e agitava l'acqua; e il primo che vi entrava, dopo che l'acqua era agitata, era guarito da qualsiasi malattia fosse affetto.

for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held.

5 C 'era là un uomo infermo da trentotto anni.

and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years,

6 G esú, vedendolo disteso e sapendo che si trovava in quello stato da molto tempo, gli disse: «Vuoi essere guarito?».

him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, `Dost thou wish to become whole?'

7 L 'infermo gli rispose: «Signore, io non ho nessuno che mi metta nella piscina quando l'acqua è agitata, e, mentre io vado, un altro vi scende prima di me».

The ailing man answered him, `Sir, I have no man, that, when the water may be troubled, he may put me into the pool, and while I am coming, another doth go down before me.'

8 G esú gli disse: «Alzati, prendi il tuo lettuccio e cammina».

Jesus saith to him, `Rise, take up thy couch, and be walking;'

9 L 'uomo fu guarito all'istante, prese il suo lettuccio e si mise a camminare. Or quel giorno era sabato

and immediately the man became whole, and he took up his couch, and was walking, and it was a sabbath on that day,

10 I Giudei perciò dissero a colui che era stato guarito: «sabato; non ti è lecito portare il tuo lettuccio».

the Jews then said to him that hath been healed, `It is a sabbath; it is not lawful to thee to take up the couch.'

11 E gli rispose loro: «Colui che mi ha guarito mi ha detto: "Prendi il tuo lettuccio e cammina"».

He answered them, `He who made me whole -- that one said to me, Take up thy couch, and be walking;'

12 E ssi allora gli domandarono: «Chi è quell'uomo che ti ha detto: "Prendi il tuo lettuccio e cammina"?».

they questioned him, then, `Who is the man who is saying to thee, Take up thy couch and be walking?'

13 M a colui che era stato guarito non sapeva chi egli fosse, perché Gesú si era allontanato a motivo della folla che era in quel luogo.

But he that was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus did move away, a multitude being in the place.

14 P iú tardi Gesú lo trovò nel tempio e gli disse: «Ecco, tu sei stato guarito; non peccare più affinché non ti avvenga di peggio».

After these things, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, `Lo, thou hast become whole; sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.'

15 Q uell'uomo se ne andò e riferí ai Giudei che era Gesú colui che lo aveva guarito.

The man went away, and told the Jews that it is Jesus who made him whole,

16 P er questo i Giudei perseguitavano Gesú e cercavano di ucciderlo, perché faceva queste cose di sabato.

and because of this were the Jews persecuting Jesus, and seeking to kill him, because these things he was doing on a sabbath.

17 M a Gesú rispose loro: «Il Padre mio opera fino ad ora, e anch'io opero».

And Jesus answered them, `My Father till now doth work, and I work;'

18 P er questo i Giudei cercavano ancor piú di ucciderlo, perché non solo violava il sabato, ma addirittura chiamava Dio suo Padre, facendosi uguale a Dio.

because of this, then, were the Jews seeking the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the sabbath, but he also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

19 A llora Gesú rispose e disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che il Figlio non può far nulla da se stesso, se non quello che vede fare dal Padre; le cose infatti che fa il Padre, le fa ugualmente anche il Figlio.

Jesus therefore responded and said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything of himself, if he may not see the Father doing anything; for whatever things He may do, these also the Son in like manner doth;

20 P oiché il Padre ama il Figlio e gli mostra tutte le cose che egli fa; e gli mostrerà opere più grandi di queste, affinché voi ne siate meravigliati.

for the Father doth love the Son, and doth shew to him all things that He himself doth; and greater works than these He will shew him, that ye may wonder.

21 I nfatti come il Padre risuscita i morti e dà loro la vita, cosí anche il Figlio dà la vita a chi vuole.

`For, as the Father doth raise the dead, and doth make alive, so also the Son doth make alive whom he willeth;

22 P oiché il Padre non giudica nessuno, ma ha dato tutto il giudizio al Figlio,

for neither doth the Father judge any one, but all the judgment He hath given to the Son,

23 a ffinché tutti onorino il Figlio come onorano il Padre, chi non onora il Figlio, non onora il Padre che lo ha mandato.

that all may honour the Son according as they honour the Father; he who is not honouring the Son, doth not honour the Father who sent him.

24 I n verità, in verità vi dico: Chi ascolta la mia parola e crede a colui che mi ha mandato, ha vita eterna, e non viene in giudizio, ma è passato dalla morte alla vita.

`Verily, verily, I say to you -- He who is hearing my word, and is believing Him who sent me, hath life age-during, and to judgment he doth not come, but hath passed out of the death to the life.

25 I n verità, in verità vi dico: L'ora viene, anzi è venuta, che i morti udranno la voce del Figlio di Dio, e coloro che l'avranno udita vivranno.

`Verily, verily, I say to you -- There cometh an hour, and it now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live;

26 P oiché, come il Padre ha vita in se stesso, cosí ha dato anche al Figlio di avere vita in se stesso;

for, as the Father hath life in himself, so He gave also to the Son to have life in himself,

27 e gli ha anche dato l'autorità di giudicare, perché è il Figlio dell'uomo.

and authority He gave him also to do judgment, because he is Son of Man.

28 N on vi meravigliate di questo, perché l'ora viene, in cui tutti coloro che sono nei sepolcri udranno la sua voce

`Wonder not at this, because there doth come an hour in which all those in the tombs shall hear his voice,

29 e ne usciranno, quelli che hanno fatto il bene in risurrezione di vita, e quelli che hanno fatto il male in risurrezione di condanna.

and they shall come forth; those who did the good things to a rising again of life, and those who practised the evil things to a rising again of judgment.

30 I o non posso far nulla da me stesso; giudico secondo ciò che odo e il mio giudizio è giusto, perché non cercola mia volontà, ma la volontà del Padre che mi ha mandato.

`I am not able of myself to do anything; according as I hear I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me.

31 S e io testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza non è verace.

`If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true;

32 V i è un altro che rende testimonianza di me, e io so che la testimonianza che egli rende di me è verace.

another there is who is testifying concerning me, and I have known that the testimony that he doth testify concerning me is true;

33 V oi avete mandato a interrogare Giovanni, ed egli ha reso testimonianza alla verità.

ye have sent unto John, and he hath testified to the truth.

34 O ra io non prendo testimonianza da alcun uomo, ma dico queste cose affinché siate salvati.

`But I do not receive testimony from man, but these things I say that ye may be saved;

35 E gli era una lampada ardente e lucente; e voi avete voluto gioire per breve tempo alla sua luce.

he was the burning and shining lamp, and ye did will to be glad, for an hour, in his light.

36 M a la testimonianza che io ho è maggiore di quella di Giovanni, poiché le opere che il Padre mi ha dato da compiere, quelle opere che io faccio testimoniano di me, che il Padre mi ha mandato.

`But I have the testimony greater than John's, for the works that the Father gave me, that I might finish them, the works themselves that I do, they testify concerning me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 E il Padre, che mi ha mandato, ha egli stesso testimoniato di me; voi non avete mai udito la sua voce, né avete visto il suo volto,

`And the Father who sent me Himself hath testified concerning me; ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor His appearance have ye seen;

38 e non avete la sua parola che dimora in voi, perché non credete in colui che egli ha mandato.

and His word ye have not remaining in you, because whom He sent, him ye do not believe.

39 V oi investigate le Scritture, perché pensate di aver per mezzo di esse vita eterna; ed esse sono quelle che testimoniano di me.

`Ye search the Writings, because ye think in them to have life age-during, and these are they that are testifying concerning me;

40 M a voi non volete venire a me per avere la vita.

and ye do not will to come unto me, that ye may have life;

41 l o non prendo gloria dagli uomini,

glory from man I do not receive,

42 M a io vi conosco, che non avete l'amore di Dio in voi.

but I have known you, that the love of God ye have not in yourselves.

43 I o sono venuto nel nome del Padre mio e voi non mi ricevete; se un altro venisse nel suo proprio nome, voi lo ricevereste.

`I have come in the name of my Father, and ye do not receive me; if another may come in his own name, him ye will receive;

44 C ome potete voi credere, voi che prendete gloria gli uni dagli altri e non cercate la gloria che viene da Dio solo?

how are ye able -- ye -- to believe, glory from one another receiving, and the glory that from God alone ye seek not?

45 N on pensate che io vi accusi presso il Padre, c'è chi vi accusa, Mosé, nel quale avete riposto la vostra speranza;

`Do not think that I will accuse you unto the Father; there is who is accusing you, Moses -- in whom ye have hoped;

46 i nfatti se voi credeste a Mosé, credereste anche a me, perché egli ha scritto di me.

for if ye were believing Moses, ye would have been believing me, for he wrote concerning me;

47 M a se non credete ai suoi scritti, come crederete alle mie parole?».

but if his writings ye believe not, how shall ye believe my sayings?'
