1 I n quello stesso tempo, c'erano lì alcuni che gli raccontarono di quei Galilei il cui sangue Pilato aveva mescolato con i loro sacrifici.

And there were present certain at that time, telling him about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate did mingle with their sacrifices;

2 E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Pensate voi che quei Galilei fossero piú peccatori di tutti gli altri Galilei, perché hanno sofferto tali cose?

and Jesus answering said to them, `Think ye that these Galileans became sinners beyond all the Galileans, because they have suffered such things?

3 N o, vi dico; ma se non vi ravvedete perirete tutti allo stesso modo.

No -- I say to you, but, if ye may not reform, all ye even so shall perish.

4 O ppure pensate voi che quei diciotto, sui quali cadde la torre in Siloe e li uccise, fossero piú colpevoli di tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme?

`Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; think ye that these became debtors beyond all men who are dwelling in Jerusalem?

5 N o, vi dico; ma se non vi ravvedete, perirete tutti allo stesso modo».

No -- I say to you, but, if ye may not reform, all ye in like manner shall perish.'

6 O r disse questa parabola: «Un uomo aveva un fico piantato nella sua vigna; venne a cercarvi del frutto ma non ne trovò.

And he spake this simile: `A certain one had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit in it, and he did not find;

7 D isse allora al vignaiolo: Ecco, sono già tre anni che io vengo a cercare frutto su questo fico, e non ne trovo; taglialo; perché deve occupare inutilmente il terreno?

and he said unto the vine-dresser, Lo, three years I come seeking fruit in this fig-tree, and do not find, cut it off, why also the ground doth it render useless?

8 M a quegli gli rispose e disse: Signore, lascialo ancora quest'anno, finché lo scalzi e gli metta del letame

`And he answering saith to him, Sir, suffer it also this year, till that I may dig about it, and cast in dung;

9 e se fa frutto, bene; altrimenti, in avvenire lo taglierai"».

and if indeed it may bear fruit --; and if not so, thereafter thou shalt cut it off.'

10 O r egli insegnava in una delle sinagoghe in giorno di sabato.

And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath,

11 E d ecco vi era una donna, che da diciotto anni aveva uno spirito di infermità, ed era tutta curva e non poteva in alcun modo raddrizzarsi.

and lo, there was a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bowed together, and not able to bend back at all,

12 O r Gesú, vedutala, la chiamò a sé e le disse: «Donna, tu sei liberata dalla tua infermità».

and Jesus having seen her, did call near, and said to her, `Woman, thou hast been loosed from thy infirmity;'

13 E pose le mani su di lei ed ella fu subito raddrizzata, e glorificava Dio.

and he laid on her hands, and presently she was set upright, and was glorifying God.

14 M a il capo della sinagoga, indignato che Gesú avesse guarito in giorno di sabato, si rivolse alla folla e disse: «Vi sono sei giorni in cui si deve lavorare; venite dunque in quelli a farvi guarire e non in giorno di sabato».

And the chief of the synagogue answering -- much displeased that on the sabbath Jesus healed -- said to the multitude, `Six days there are in which it behoveth to be working; in these, then, coming, be healed, and not on the sabbath-day.'

15 A llora il Signore gli rispose e disse: «Ipocriti! Ciascun di voi non slega forse di sabato dalla mangiatoia, il suo bue o il suo asino per condurlo a bere?

Then the Lord answered him and said, `Hypocrite, doth not each of you on the sabbath loose his ox or ass from the stall, and having led away, doth water ?

16 N on doveva quindi essere sciolta da questo legame, in giorno di sabato, costei che è figlia di Abrahamo e che Satana aveva tenuta legata per ben diciotto anni?».

and this one, being a daughter of Abraham, whom the Adversary bound, lo, eighteen years, did it not behove to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day?'

17 E mentre egli diceva queste cose, tutti i suoi avversari erano svergognati, tutta la folla invece si rallegrava di tutte le opere gloriose da lui compiute.

And he saying these things, all who were opposed to him were being ashamed, and all the multitude were rejoicing over all the glorious things that are being done by him.

18 Q uindi egli disse: «A cosa è simile il regno di Dio, e a che lo paragonerò?

And he said, `To what is the reign of God like? and to what shall I liken it?

19 E ' simile a un granel di senape che un uomo ha preso e gettato nel suo orto, poi è cresciuto ed è diventato un grande albero, e gli uccelli del cielo sono venuti a cercar riparo tra i suoi rami».

It is like to a grain of mustard, which a man having taken, did cast into his garden, and it increased, and came to a great tree, and the fowls of the heavens did rest in its branches.'

20 P oi disse di nuovo: «A che paragonerò il regno di Dio?

And again he said, `To what shall I liken the reign of God?

21 E sso è simile al lievito che una donna prende e ripone in tre stai di farina, finché sia tutta lievitata».

It is like leaven, which a woman, having taken, did hide in three measures of meal, till that all was leavened.'

22 E d egli andava in giro per città e villaggi insegnando, e intanto si avvicinava a Gerusalemme.

And he was going through cities and villages, teaching, and making progress toward Jerusalem;

23 O r un tale gli chiese: «Signore, sono pochi coloro che si salvano?». Egli disse loro:

and a certain one said to him, `Sir, are those saved few?' and he said unto them,

24 « Sforzatevi di entrare per la porta stretta, perché vi dico che molti cercheranno di entrare e non potranno.

`Be striving to go in through the straight gate, because many, I say to you, will seek to go in, and shall not be able;

25 U na volta che il padrone di casa si è alzato ed ha chiuso la porta, voi allora, stando di fuori, comincerete a bussare alla porta dicendo: Signore, Signore, aprici ma egli, rispondendo, vi dirà: "Io non so da dove venite".

from the time the master of the house may have risen up, and may have shut the door, and ye may begin without to stand, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, lord, open to us, and he answering shall say to you, I have not known you whence ye are,

26 A llora comincerete a dire: "Noi abbiamo mangiato e bevuto in tua presenza, e tu hai insegnato nelle nostre piazze".

then ye may begin to say, We did eat before thee, and did drink, and in our broad places thou didst teach;

27 M a egli dirà: "Io vi dico che non so da dove venite, via da me voi tutti operatori d'iniquità

and he shall say, I say to you, I have not known you whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of the unrighteousness.

28 L í sarà pianto e stridor di denti, quando vedrete Abrahamo, Isacco, Giacobbe e tutti i profeti nel regno di Dio, mentre voi ne sarete cacciati fuori.

`There shall be there the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth, when ye may see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the reign of God, and yourselves being cast out without;

29 N e verranno da oriente e da occidente, da settentrione e da mezzogiorno, e sederanno a tavola nel regno di Dio.

and they shall come from east and west, and from north and south, and shall recline in the reign of God,

30 E d ecco, vi sono alcuni fra gli ultimi che saranno i primi, e alcuni fra i primi che saranno gli ultimi».

and lo, there are last who shall be first, and there are first who shall be last.'

31 I n quello stesso giorno alcuni farisei, vennero a dirgli: «Parti e vattene da qui perché Erode vuole ucciderti».

On that day there came near certain Pharisees, saying to him, `Go forth, and be going on hence, for Herod doth wish to kill thee;'

32 E d egli disse loro: «Andate a dire a quella volpe: "Ecco, oggi e domani io scaccio i demoni e compio guarigioni, e il terzo giorno giungo al termine della mia corsa".

and he said to them, `Having gone, say to this fox, Lo, I cast forth demons, and perfect cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third I am being perfected;

33 M a oggi, domani e dopodomani devo camminare, perché non può essere che un profeta muoia fuori di Gerusalemme.

but it behoveth me to-day, and to-morrow, and the following, to go on, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish out of Jerusalem.

34 G erusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi coloro che ti sono mandati! Quante volte ho voluto a raccogliere i tuoi figli come la gallina raccoglie i suoi pulcini sotto le ali, ma voi non avete voluto!

`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that is killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto her, how often did I will to gather together thy children, as a hen her brood under the wings, and ye did not will.

35 E cco, la vostra casa vi è lasciata deserta. Or io vi dico che non mi vedrete piú finché venga il tempo in cui direte: "Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore"».

`Lo, your house is being left to you desolate, and verily I say to you -- ye may not see me, till it may come, when ye may say, Blessed he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'
