1 L a parola dell'Eterno che fu rivolta al profeta Geremia contro i Filistei, prima che il Faraone attaccasse Gaza.

That which hath been the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh smiteth Gaza:

2 C osí dice l'Eterno: «Ecco, delle acque salgono dal nord, diventano un torrente che straripa e inondano il paese e tutto ciò che contiene, la città e quelli che abitano in essa; allora gli uomini grideranno e tutti gli abitanti del paese urleranno.

`Thus said Jehovah: Lo, waters are coming up from the north, And have been for an overflowing stream, And they overflow the land and its fulness, The city, and the inhabitants in it, And men have cried out, And howled hath every inhabitant of the land.

3 A llo strepito degli zoccoli scalpitanti dei suoi possenti destrieri, al fragore dei suoi carri, al fracasso delle sue ruote, i padri non si volgeranno verso i figli per la debolezza delle loro mani,

From the sound of the stamping of the hoofs of his mighty ones, From the rushing of his chariot, the noise of his wheels, Fathers have not turned unto sons, From feebleness of hands,

4 a motivo del giorno che viene per devastare tutti i Filistei, eliminando da Tiro e Sidone ogni superstite che può dar aiuto, perché l'Eterno distruggerà i Filistei, i superstiti dell'isola di Kaftor.

Because of the day that hath come to spoil all the Philistines, To cut off to Tyre and to Zidon every helping remnant. For Jehovah is spoiling the Philistines, The remnant of the isle of Caphtor.

5 G aza è divenuta calva, Ashkelon è distrutta. O superstiti della loro valle, fino a quando vi farete incisioni?

Come hath baldness unto Gaza, Cut off hath been Ashkelon, O remnant of their valley, Till when dost thou cut thyself?

6 O spada dell'Eterno, quando mai ti concederai riposo? Rientra nel tuo fodero, fermati e sta' calma!

Ho, sword of Jehovah, till when art thou not quiet? Be removed unto thy sheath, rest and cease.

7 C ome potrebbe riposare, se l'Eterno le ha dato ordini contro Ashkelon e contro il lido del mare?; egli l'ha convocata là».

How shall it be quiet, And Jehovah hath given a charge to it, Against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? There hath He appointed it!'
