1 P oi Balaam disse a Balak: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette torelli e sette montoni».

And Balaam saith unto Balak, `Build for me in this seven altars, and make ready for me in this seven bullocks and seven rams.'

2 B alak fece come Balaam aveva detto, quindi Balak e Balaam offrirono un torello e un montone su ciascun altare.

And Balak doth as Balaam hath spoken, and Balak -- Balaam also -- offereth a bullock and a ram on the altar,

3 B alaam disse poi a Balak: «Rimani presso il tuo olocausto e io andrò: forse l'Eterno verrà ad incontrarmi; e quel che mi mostrerà io te lo riferirò». Così egli andò su un'altura brulla.

and Balaam saith to Balak, `Station thyself by thy burnt-offering and I go on, it may be Jehovah doth come to meet me, and the thing which He sheweth me -- I have declared to thee;' and he goeth a high place.

4 E DIO venne incontro a Balaam, e Balaam gli disse: «lo ho preparato sette altari, e ho offerto un torello e un montone su ciascun altare».

And God cometh unto Balaam, and he saith unto Him, `The seven altars I have arranged, and I offer a bullock and a ram on the altar;'

5 A llora l'Eterno mise un messaggio in bocca a Balaam e gli disse: «Torna da Balak e parla così».

and Jehovah putteth a word in the mouth of Balaam, and saith, `Turn back unto Balak, and thus thou dost speak.'

6 R itornò da lui, ed ecco che egli stava presso l'olocausto, lui e tutti i principi di Moab.

And he turneth back unto him, and lo, he is standing by his burnt-offering, he and all the princes of Moab.

7 A llora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Balak, il re di Moab, mi ha fatto venire da Aram, dai monti d'Oriente: "Vieni, maledici per me Giacobbe, vieni, accusa Israele!".

And he taketh up his simile, and saith: `From Aram he doth lead me -- Balak king of Moab; From mountains of the east: Come -- curse for me Jacob, And come -- be indignant Israel.

8 C ome posso maledire colui che Dio non ha maledetto? Come posso accusare colui che l'Eterno non ha accusato?

What -- do I pierce? -- God hath not pierced! And what -- am I indignant? -- Jehovah hath not been indignant!

9 I o lo vedo dalla cima delle rupi e lo contemplo dalle alture; ecco, è un popolo che dimora solo e non è annoverato fra le nazioni.

For from the top of rocks I see it, And from heights I behold it; Lo a people! alone it doth tabernacle, And among nations doth not reckon itself.

10 C hi può calcolare la polvere di Giacobbe o contare il quarto d'Israele? Possa io morire della morte dei giusti e possa la mia fine essere come la loro!».

Who hath counted the dust of Jacob, And the number of the fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of upright ones, And let my last end be like his!'

11 A llora Balak disse a Balaam: «Che mi hai fatto? Ti ho preso per maledire i miei nemici, invece tu li hai grandemente benedetti».

And Balak saith unto Balaam, `What hast thou done to me? to pierce mine enemies I have taken thee -- and lo, thou hast certainly blessed;'

12 M a egli rispose e disse: «Non devo io farmi premura di dire ciò che l'Eterno mi mette in bocca?».

and he answereth and saith, `That which Jehovah doth put in my mouth -- it do I not take heed to speak?'

13 P oi Balak gli disse: «Deh, vieni con me in un altro luogo, da dove tu lo possa vedere, anche se ne vedrai solo l'estremità e non lo potrai vedere tutto quanto, e di là lo maledirai per me».

And Balak saith unto him, `Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, whence thou dost see it, only its extremity thou dost see, and all of it thou dost not see, and pierce it for me thence;'

14 C osì lo condusse al campo di Tsofim, sulla cima del Pisgah; costruì sette altari e offrì un torello e un montone su ciascun altare.

and he taketh him the field of Zophim, unto the top of Pisgah, and buildeth seven altars, and offereth a bullock and a ram on the altar.

15 B alaam quindi disse a Balak: «Rimani qui presso il tuo olocausto e io andrò a incontrare l'Eterno lassù».

And he saith unto Balak, `Station thyself here by thy burnt-offering, and I -- I meet there;'

16 E l'Eterno si fece incontro a Balaam, gli mise un messaggio in bocca e gli disse: «Torna da Balak e parla così».

and Jehovah cometh unto Balaam, and setteth a word in his mouth, and saith, `Turn back unto Balak, and thus thou dost speak.'

17 C osì ritornò da lui, ed ecco che egli stava presso il suo olocausto con i principi di Moab. Balak gli disse: Che cosa ha detto l'Eterno?».

And he cometh unto him, and lo, he is standing by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him, and Balak saith to him: `What hath Jehovah spoken?'

18 A llora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Levati, Balak, e ascolta! Porgimi orecchio, figlio di Tsippor!

And he taketh up his simile, and saith: `Rise, Balak, and hear; Give ear unto me, son of Zippor!

19 D io non è un uomo, perché possa mentire, né un figlio d'uomo, perché possa pentirsi. Quando ha detto una cosa, non la farà? O quando ha dichiarato una cosa, non la compirà?

God not a man -- and lieth, And a son of man -- and repenteth! Hath He said -- and doth He not do ? And spoken -- and doth He not confirm it?

20 E cco, ho ricevuto l'ordine di benedire; si, egli ha benedetto e io non revocherò la benedizione.

Lo, to bless I have received: Yea, He blesseth, and I not reverse it.

21 E gli non ha scorto iniquità in Giacobbe e non ha visto perversità in Israele. L'Eterno, il suo DIO, è con lui, e il grido di un re è tra di loro.

He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, Nor hath He seen perverseness in Israel; Jehovah his God with him, And a shout of a king in him.

22 D io, che lo ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto, è per lui come le corna poderose del bufalo.

God is bringing them out from Egypt, As the swiftness of a Reem is to him;

23 N on c'è sortilegio contro Giacobbe, non c'è divinazione contro Israele. Ora bisogna dire di Giacobbe e d'Israele che cosa Dio ha compiuto.

For no enchantment against Jacob, Nor divination against Israel, At the time it is said of Jacob and Israel, What hath God wrought!

24 E cco, un popolo si leverà come una leonessa e si rizzerà come un leone; e non si accovaccerà prima di aver divorato la preda e di aver bevuto il sangue di quelli che ha ucciso».

Lo, the people as a lioness riseth, And as a lion he lifteth himself up, He lieth not down till he eateth prey, And blood of pierced ones doth drink.'

25 A llora Balak disse a Balaam: «Non maledirlo affatto, ma neppure benedicilo».

And Balak saith unto Balaam, `Neither pierce it at all, nor bless it at all;'

26 M a Balaam rispose e disse a Balak: «Non ti ho, forse detto che io avrei fatto tutto ciò che l'Eterno avrebbe detto?».

and Balaam answereth and saith unto Balak, `Have I not spoken unto thee, saying, All that Jehovah speaketh -- it I do?'

27 B alak disse quindi a Balaam: «Deh, vieni, io ti condurrò in un altro luogo; forse piacerà a DIO che di là tu lo maledica per me».

And Balak saith unto Balaam, `Come, I pray thee, I take thee unto another place; it may be it is right in the eyes of God -- to pierce it for me from thence.'

28 C osì Balak condusse Balaam in cima al Peor che sovrasta il deserto.

And Balak taketh Balaam to the top of Peor, which is looking on the front of the wilderness,

29 E Balaam disse a Balak: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette torelli e sette montoni».

and Balaam saith unto Balak, `Build for me in this seven altars, and make ready for me in this seven bullocks and seven rams;'

30 E Balak fece come Balaam aveva detto, e offri un torello e un montone su ciascun altare.

and Balak doth as Balaam said, and he offereth a bullock and a ram on an altar.
