1 S i avvicinava intanto la festa degli Azzimi, detta Pasqua.

And the feast of the unleavened food was coming nigh, that is called Passover,

2 E d i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano come farlo morire, poiché temevano il popolo.

and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they may take him up, for they were afraid of the people.

3 O r Satana entrò in Giuda, soprannominato Iscariota, che era nel numero dei dodici.

And the Adversary entered into Judas, who is surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve,

4 C osí egli andò ad accordarsi con i capi dei sacerdoti e con i magistrati sul come tradirlo.

and he, having gone away, spake with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might deliver him up to them,

5 E d essi se ne rallegrarono e convennero di dargli del denaro.

and they rejoiced, and covenanted to give him money,

6 E d egli acconsentí, e cercava l'opportunità di consegnarlo nelle loro mani di nascosto dalla folla.

and he agreed, and was seeking a favourable season to deliver him up to them without tumult.

7 O r venne il giorno degli Azzimi, nel quale si doveva sacrificare la Pasqua.

And the day of the unleavened food came, in which it was behoving the passover to be sacrificed,

8 E Gesú mandò Pietro e Giovanni, dicendo: «Andate e preparate la Pasqua per noi, affinché la possiamo mangiare».

and he sent Peter and John, saying, `Having gone on, prepare to us the passover, that we may eat;'

9 E d essi gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che la prepariamo?».

and they said to him, `Where wilt thou that we might prepare?'

10 A llora egli disse loro: «Ecco, quando entrerete in città, vi verrà incontro un uomo che porta una brocca d'acqua; seguitelo nella casa dove entrerà.

And he said to them, `Lo, in your entering into the city, there shall meet you a man, bearing a pitcher of water, follow him to the house where he doth go in,

11 D ite quindi al padrone di casa: "Il Maestro ti manda a dire: Dov'è la sala, nella quale posso mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?"

and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where the passover with my disciples I may eat?

12 A llora egli vi mostrerà una grande sala arredata; là preparerete la Pasqua».

and he shall show you a large upper room furnished, there make ready;'

13 A ndati dunque, essi trovarono come aveva loro detto e prepararono la Pasqua.

and they, having gone away, found as he hath said to them, and they made ready the passover.

14 E , quando giunse l'ora, egli si mise a tavola e i dodici apostoli con lui.

And when the hour come, he reclined (at meat), and the twelve apostles with him,

15 A llora egli disse loro: «Ho grandemente desiderato di mangiare questa Pasqua con voi prima di soffrire,

and he said unto them, `With desire I did desire to eat this passover with you before my suffering,

16 p oiché io vi dico che non ne mangerò piú finché abbia il suo compimento nel regno di Dio».

for I say to you, that no more may I eat of it till it may be fulfilled in the reign of God.'

17 P oi prese il calice, rese grazie e disse: «Prendete questo e dividetelo fra di voi,

And having taken a cup, having given thanks, he said, `Take this and divide to yourselves,

18 p erché io vi dico che non berrò piú del frutto della vigna, finché il regno di Dio sia venuto».

for I say to you that I may not drink of the produce of the vine till the reign of God may come.'

19 P oi, preso il pane, rese grazie, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Questo è il mio corpo, che è dato per voi; fate questo in memoria di me»

And having taken bread, having given thanks, he brake and gave to them, saying, `This is my body, that for you is being given, this do ye -- to remembrance of me.'

20 C osí pure, dopo aver cenato, prese il calice dicendo: «Questo calice è il nuovo patto nel mio sangue, che è sparso per voi.

In like manner, also, the cup after the supping, saying, `This cup the new covenant in my blood, that for you is being poured forth.

21 M a ecco, la mano di colui che mi tradisce è sulla tavola con me.

`But, lo, the hand of him delivering me up with me on the table,

22 C ertamente il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come è stabilito, ma guai a quell'uomo per mezzo del quale è tradito!».

and indeed the Son of Man doth go according to what hath been determined; but wo to that man through whom he is being delivered up.'

23 A llora essi cominciarono a domandarsi l'un l'altro, chi di loro avrebbe fatto questo.

And they began to reason among themselves, who then of them it may be, who is about to do this thing.

24 E tra di loro sorse anche una contesa, intorno a chi di loro doveva essere considerato il maggiore.

And there happened also a strife among them -- who of them is accounted to be greater.

25 M a Gesú disse loro: «I re delle nazioni le signoreggiano, e coloro che esercitano autorità su di esse sono chiamati benefattori.

And he said to them, `The kings of the nations do exercise lordship over them, and those exercising authority upon them are called benefactors;

26 M a con voi non sia cosí; anzi il piú grande fra di voi sia come il minore e chi governa come colui che serve.

but ye not so, but he who is greater among you -- let him be as the younger; and he who is leading, as he who is ministering;

27 C hi è infatti piú grande chi siede a tavola, o colui che serve? Non è forse colui che siede a tavola? Eppure io sono in mezzo a voi come colui che serve.

for who is greater? he who is reclining (at meat), or he who is ministering? is it not he who is reclining (at meat)? and I -- I am in your midst as he who is ministering.

28 O r voi siete quelli che siete rimasti con me nelle mie prove.

`And ye -- ye are those who have remained with me in my temptations,

29 E d io vi assegno il regno, come il Padre mio lo ha assegnato a me,

and I appoint to you, as my Father did appoint to me, a kingdom,

30 a ffinché mangiate e beviate alla mia tavola nel mio regno e sediate su troni per giudicare le dodici tribú d'Israele.

that ye may eat and may drink at my table, in my kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'

31 I l Signore disse ancora: «Simone, Simone, ecco, Satana ha chiesto di vagliarvi come si vaglia il grano.

And the Lord said, `Simon, Simon, lo, the Adversary did ask you for himself to sift as the wheat,

32 M a io ho pregato per te, affinché la tua fede non venga meno; e tu, quando sarai ritornato, conferma i tuoi fratelli».

and I besought for thee, that thy faith may not fail; and thou, when thou didst turn, strengthen thy brethren.'

33 M a egli disse: «Signore, io sono pronto ad andare con te tanto in prigione che alla morte».

And he said to him, `Sir, with thee I am ready both to prison and to death to go;'

34 M a Gesú disse: «Pietro, io ti dico che oggi il gallo non canterà, prima che tu abbia negato tre volte di conoscermi».

and he said, `I say to thee, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice thou mayest disown knowing me.'

35 P oi disse loro: «Quando vi mandai senza borsa, senza sacca e senza sandali, vi è forse mancata qualche cosa?». Ed essi dissero: «Nessuna».

And he said to them, `When I sent you without bag, and scrip, and sandals, did ye lack anything?' and they said, `Nothing.'

36 D isse loro dunque: «Ma ora chi ha una borsa la prenda con sé, e cosí pure una sacca; e chi non ha la spada venda la sua veste e ne compri una.

Then said he to them, `But, now, he who is having a bag, let him take up, and in like manner also a scrip; and he who is not having, let him sell his garment, and buy a sword,

37 P oiché io vi dico che ciò che è scritto deve ancora essere adempiuto in me: "Ed egli è stato annoverato fra i malfattori" Le cose infatti che sono scritte di me hanno il loro compimento».

for I say to you, that yet this that hath been written it behoveth to be fulfilled in me: And with lawless ones he was reckoned, for also the things concerning me have an end.'

38 A llora essi dissero: «Signore, ecco qui due spade». Ma egli disse loro: «Basta!».

And they said, `Sir, lo, here two swords;' and he said to them, `It is sufficient.'

39 P oi, uscito, andò come al solito al monte degli ulivi, e anche i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.

And having gone forth, he went on, according to custom, to the mount of the Olives, and his disciples also followed him,

40 G iunto sul posto, disse loro: «Pregate per non entrare in tentazione»

and having come to the place, he said to them, `Pray ye not to enter into temptation.'

41 E si allontanò da loro, circa un tiro di sasso e, postosi in ginocchio, pregava,

And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying,

42 d icendo: «Padre, se vuoi, allontana da me questo calice! Tuttavia non sia fatta la mia volontà, ma la tua».

saying, `Father, if Thou be counselling to make this cup pass from me --; but, not my will, but Thine be done.' --

43 A llora gli apparve un angelo dal cielo per dargli forza.

And there appeared to him a messenger from heaven strengthening him;

44 E d egli, essendo in agonia, pregava ancor piú intensamente, e il suo sudore divenne simile a grumi di sangue che cadevano a terra.

and having been in agony, he was more earnestly praying, and his sweat became, as it were, great drops of blood falling upon the ground.

45 A lzatosi poi dalla preghiera, venne dai suoi discepoli e li trovò che dormivano per la tristezza

And having risen up from the prayer, having come unto the disciples, he found them sleeping from the sorrow,

46 e disse loro: «Perché dormite? Alzatevi e pregate per non entrare in tentazione».

and he said to them, `Why do ye sleep? having risen, pray that ye may not enter into temptation.'

47 M entre egli parlava ancora, ecco una turba; or colui che si chiamava Giuda uno dei dodici, li precedeva e si accostò a Gesú per baciarlo.

And while he is speaking, lo, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them, and he came nigh to Jesus to kiss him,

48 E Gesú gli disse: «Giuda, tradisci il Figlio dell'uomo con un bacio?».

and Jesus said to him, `Judas, with a kiss the Son of Man dost thou deliver up?'

49 A llora quelli attorno a Gesú, vedendo ciò che stava per accadere, gli dissero: «Signore, dobbiamo colpire con la spada?».

And those about him, having seen what was about to be, said to him, `Sir, shall we smite with a sword?'

50 E uno di loro colpí il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l'orecchio destro.

And a certain one of them smote the servant of the chief priest, and took off his right ear,

51 M a Gesú, rispondendo, disse: «Lasciate, basta cosí». E, toccato l'orecchio di quell'uomo, lo guarí.

and Jesus answering said, `Suffer ye thus far,' and having touched his ear, he healed him.

52 P oi Gesú disse ai capi dei sacerdoti, ai capitani del tempio e agli anziani che erano venuti contro di lui: «Siete usciti contro di me con spade e bastoni come contro un brigante?

And Jesus said to those having come upon him -- chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and elders -- `As upon a robber have ye come forth, with swords and sticks?

53 M entre ogni giorno io ero con voi nel tempio, voi non metteste mai le mani su di me; ma questa è la vostra ora e la potestà delle tenebre».

while daily I was with you in the temple, ye did stretch forth no hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of the darkness.'

54 D opo averlo catturato, lo portarono via e lo condussero nella casa del sommo sacerdote. E Pietro seguiva da lontano.

And having taken him, they led and brought him to the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following afar off,

55 Q uando essi accesero un fuoco in mezzo al cortile e si posero a sedere attorno, Pietro si sedette in mezzo a loro.

and they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them,

56 U na serva lo vide seduto presso il fuoco, lo guardò attentamente e disse: «Anche costui era con lui».

and a certain maid having seen him sitting at the light, and having earnestly looked at him, she said, `And this one was with him!'

57 M a egli lo negò, dicendo: «Donna, non lo conosco».

and he disowned him, saying, `Woman, I have not known him.'

58 P oco dopo lo vide un altro e disse: «Anche tu sei di quelli». Ma Pietro disse: «O uomo, non lo sono».

And after a little, another having seen him, said, `And thou art of them!' and Peter said, `Man, I am not.'

59 P assata circa un'ora, un altro affermava con insistenza, dicendo: «In verità anche costui era con lui, perché è Galileo».

And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, `Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;'

60 M a Pietro disse: «O uomo, non so quello che dici». E subito, mentre ancora parlava, il gallo cantò.

and Peter said, `Man, I have not known what thou sayest;' and presently, while he is speaking, a cock crew.

61 E il Signore, voltatosi, guardò Pietro. E Pietro si ricordò della parola che il Signore gli aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte».

And the Lord having turned did look on Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him -- `Before a cock shall crow, thou mayest disown me thrice;'

62 A llora Pietro uscì fuori e pianse amaramente.

and Peter having gone without, wept bitterly.

63 I ntanto gli uomini che tenevano Gesú lo schernivano, percuotendolo.

And the men who were holding Jesus were mocking him, beating;

64 E , dopo averlo bendato, lo percuotevano in faccia e gli domandavano, dicendo: «Indovina, chi è colui che ti ha percosso?».

and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, `Prophesy who he is who smote thee?'

65 E , bestemmiando, dicevano molte altre cose contro di lui.

and many other things, speaking evilly, they spake in regard to him.

66 A ppena fu giorno si riunirono gli anziani del popolo, i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi e lo condussero nel loro sinedrio, dicendo:

And when it became day there was gathered together the eldership of the people, chief priests also, and scribes, and they led him up to their own sanhedrim,

67 « Se tu sei il Cristo, diccelo». Ma egli disse loro: «Anche se ve lo dicessi, non credereste.

saying, `If thou be the Christ, tell us.' And he said to them, `If I may tell you, ye will not believe;

68 S e poi vi interrogassi, non mi rispondereste né mi lascereste andare.

and if I also question, ye will not answer me or send me away;

69 M a da ora in poi il Figlio dell'uomo sederà alla destra della potenza di Dio».

henceforth, there shall be the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God.'

70 A llora tutti dissero: «Sei tu dunque il Figlio di Dio?». Ed egli disse loro: «Voi dite giustamente, perché io lo sono».

And they all said, `Thou, then, art the Son of God?' and he said unto them, `Ye say, because I am;'

71 E ssi allora dissero: «Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimonianza? Dal momento che noi stessi l'abbiamo udito dalla sua propria bocca».

and they said, `What need yet have we of testimony? for we ourselves did hear from his mouth.'
