1 A llora Samuele disse a tutto Israele: «Ecco, io vi ho dato ascolto in tutto ciò che mi avete detto e ho costituito un re a su di voi.

And Samuel saith unto all Israel, `Lo, I have hearkened to your voice, to all that ye said to me, and I cause to reign over you a king,

2 E d ora, ecco il re che andrà davanti a voi. Io sono ormai vecchio e canuto, e i miei figli sono tra voi; io sono andato davanti a voi dalla mia giovinezza fino a questo giorno.

and now, lo, the king is walking habitually before you, and I have become aged and gray-headed, and my sons, lo, they with you, and I have walked habitually before you from my youth till this day.

3 E ccomi, testimoniate contro di me davanti all'Eterno e davanti al suo unto: A chi ho preso il bue? A chi ho preso l'asino? Chi ho defraudato? Chi ho oppresso? Dalle mani di chi ho accettato alcun regalo che mi abbia accecato gli occhi? Io ve lo restituirò».

`Lo, here I; testify against me, over-against Jehovah, and over-against His anointed; whose ox have I taken, and whose ass have I taken, and whom have I oppressed; whom have I bruised, and of whose hand have I taken a ransom, and hide mine eyes with it? -- and I restore to you.'

4 E ssi risposero: «Tu non ci hai defraudato, non ci hai oppresso e non hai preso nulla dalle mani di alcuno».

And they say, `Thou hast not oppressed us, nor hast thou crushed us, nor hast thou taken from the hand of any one anything.'

5 E gli disse loro: «L'Eterno è testimone contro di voi e il suo unto è testimone in questo giorno, che non avete trovato nulla nelle mie mani». Essi risposero: «Si, è testimone!».

And he saith unto them, `A witness Jehovah against you: and a witness His anointed this day, that ye have not found anything in my hand;' and they say, `A witness.'

6 A llora Samuele disse al popolo: «è l'Eterno che ha stabilito Mosè e Aaronne, e ha fatto uscire i vostri padri dal paese d'Egitto.

And Samuel saith unto the people, `Jehovah -- He who made Moses and Aaron, and who brought up your fathers out of the land of Egypt!

7 O r dunque presentatevi, perché possa davanti all'Eterno mettere in evidenza con voi tutte le opere giuste che l'Eterno ha compiuto per voi e per i vostri padri.

and, now, station yourselves, and I judge you before Jehovah, with all the righteous acts of Jehovah, which He did with you, and with your fathers.

8 D opo che Giacobbe andò in Egitto, e i vostri padri gridarono all'Eterno l'Eterno mandò Mosè ed Aaronne, che fecero uscire i vostri padri dall'Egitto e li fecero abitare in questo luogo

`When Jacob hath come in to Egypt, and your fathers cry unto Jehovah, then Jehovah sendeth Moses and Aaron, and they bring out your fathers from Egypt, and cause them to dwell in this place,

9 M a essi dimenticarono l'Eterno, il loro DIO, ed egli li vendette nelle mani di Sisera, capo dell'esercito di Hatsor, e In potere dei Filistei e del re di Moab, i quali mossero loro guerra.

and they forget Jehovah their God, and He selleth them into the hand of Sisera, head of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fight against them,

10 A llora gridarono all'Eterno e dissero: "Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo abbandonato l'Eterno e abbiamo servito i Baal e le Ashtaroth, ma ora liberaci dalle mani dei nostri nemici e serviremo te".

and they cry unto Jehovah, and say, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and serve the Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and now, deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we serve Thee.

11 C osì l'Eterno mandò Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jefte e Samuele, e vi liberò dalle mani dei vostri nemici tutt'intorno e viveste al sicuro.

`And Jehovah sendeth Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivereth you out of the hand of your enemies round about, and ye dwell confidently.

12 M a quando vedeste che Nahash, re dei figli di Ammon, muoveva contro di voi, mi diceste: "No, un re deve regnare su di noi", mentre l'Eterno il vostro DIO, era il vostro re.

`And ye see that Nahash king of the Bene-Ammon hath come against you, and ye say to me, Nay, but a king doth reign over us; and Jehovah your God your king!

13 O r dunque, ecco il re che avete scelto e che avete chiesto; ecco, l'Eterno ha costituito un re su di voi.

And, now, lo, the king whom ye have chosen -- whom ye have asked! and lo, Jehovah hath placed over you a king.

14 S e temete l'Eterno, lo servite e date ascolto alla sua voce, e non vi ribellate al comandamento dell'Eterno, allora voi e il re che regna su di voi seguirete l'Eterno, il vostro DIO.

`If ye fear Jehovah, and have served Him, and hearkened to His voice, then ye do not provoke the mouth of Jehovah, and ye have been -- both ye and the king who hath reigned over you -- after Jehovah your God.

15 M a se non date ascolto alla voce dell'Eterno e vi ribellate al comandamento dell'Eterno, allora la mano dell'Eterno sarà contro di voi, come fu contro i vostri padri.

`And if ye do not hearken to the voice of Jehovah -- then ye have provoked the mouth of Jehovah, and the hand of Jehovah hath been against you, and against your fathers.

16 P erciò ora fermatevi e guardate questa cosa grande che l'Eterno farà davanti ai vostri occhi.

`Also now, station yourselves and see this great thing which Jehovah is doing before your eyes;

17 N on è forse il tempo della mietitura del grano? Io invocherò l'Eterno ed egli manderà tuoni e pioggia; così comprenderete e vedrete che il male che avete fatto chiedendo per voi un re è grande agli occhi dell'Eterno».

is it not wheat-harvest to-day? I call unto Jehovah, and He doth give voices and rain; and know ye and see that your evil is great which ye have done in the eyes of Jehovah, to ask for you a king.'

18 A llora Samuele invocò l'Eterno, e l'Eterno mandò quel giorno tuoni e pioggia; e tutto il popolo ebbe gran timore dell'Eterno e di Samuele.

And Samuel calleth unto Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth voices and rain, on that day, and all the people greatly fear Jehovah and Samuel;

19 T utto il popolo quindi disse a Samuele: «Prega l'Eterno, il tuo DIO per i tuoi servi, affinché non abbiamo a morire, poiché abbiamo aggiunto a tutti i nostri peccati il male di chiedere per noi un re».

and all the people say unto Samuel, `Pray for thy servants unto Jehovah thy God, and we do not die, for we have added to all our sins evil to ask for us a king.'

20 S amuele rispose al popolo: «Non temete; anche se avete fatto tutto questo male, non lasciate di seguire l'Eterno ma servite l'Eterno con tutto il vostro cuore.

And Samuel saith unto the people, `Fear not; ye have done all this evil; only, turn not aside from after Jehovah -- and ye have served Jehovah with all your heart,

21 N on allontanatevi per seguire cose vane, che non possono giovare né liberare, perché sono cose vane.

and ye do not turn aside after the vain things which do not profit nor deliver, for they vain,

22 P oiché l'Eterno non abbandonerà il suo popolo, per amore del suo grande nome, perché è piaciuto all'Eterno di farvi il suo popolo.

for Jehovah doth not leave His people, on account of His great name; for Jehovah hath been pleased to make you to Him for a people.

23 Q uanto a me, non sia mai che io pecchi contro l'Eterno smettendo di pregare per voi; anzi vi mostrerò la buona e diritta via.

`I, also, far be it from me to sin against Jehovah, by ceasing to pray for you, and I have directed you in the good and upright way;

24 S olo temete l'Eterno e servitelo fedelmente con tutto il cuore vostro; considerate infatti le grandi cose che ha fatto per voi.

only, fear ye Jehovah, and ye have served Him in truth with all your heart, for see that which He hath made great with you;

25 M a se continuate a fare il male, tanto voi che il vostro re sarete spazzati via».

and if ye really do evil, both ye and your king are consumed.'
