1 « Ecco, io mando il mio messaggero a preparare la via davanti a me. E subito il Signore, che voi cercate, entrerà nel suo tempio, l'angelo del patto in cui prendete piacere, ecco, verrà», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti.

Lo, I am sending My messenger, And he hath prepared a way before Me, And suddenly come in unto his temple Doth the Lord whom ye are seeking, Even the messenger of the covenant, Whom ye are desiring, Lo, he is coming, said Jehovah of Hosts.

2 « Ma chi potrà sostenere il giorno della sua venuta? Chi potrà rimanere in piedi quando egli apparirà? Egli è come un fuoco d'affinatore, come la soda dei lavandai.

And who is bearing the day of his coming? And who is standing in his appearing? For he as fire of a refiner, And as soap of a fuller.

3 E gli siederà come chi affina e purifica l'argento; purificherà i figli di Levi e li affinerà come oro e argento, perché possano offrire all'Eterno un'oblazione con giustizia.

And he hath sat, a refiner and purifier of silver, And he hath purified the sons of Levi, And hath refined them as gold and as silver, And they have been to Jehovah bringing nigh a present in righteousness.

4 A llora l'offerta di Giuda e di Gerusalemme sarà gradevole all'Eterno, come nei tempi passati, come negli anni di prima.

And sweet to Jehovah hath been the present of Judah and Jerusalem, As in days of old, and as in former years.

5 C osí mi avvicinerò a voi per il giudizio e sarò un testimone pronto contro gli stregoni, contro gli adulteri, contro quelli che giurano il falso, contro quelli che frodano il salario all'operaio, opprimono la vedova e l'orfano, allontanano lo straniero e non temono me». dice l'Eterno degli eserciti.

And I have drawn near to you for judgment, And I have been a witness, Making haste against sorcerers, And against adulterers, And against swearers to a falsehood, And against oppressors of the hire of an hireling, Of a widow, and of a fatherless one, And those turning aside a sojourner, And who fear Me not, said Jehovah of Hosts.

6 « Io sono l'Eterno, non muto; perciò voi, o figli di Giacobbe, non siete consumati.

For I Jehovah, I have not changed, And ye, the sons of Jacob, Ye have not been consumed.

7 F in dai giorni dei vostri padri vi siete allontanati dai miei statuti e non li avete osservati. Tornate a me e io tornerò a voi», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti. «Ma voi dite: "In che cosa dobbiamo tornare?".

Even from the days of your fathers Ye have turned aside from My statutes, And ye have not taken heed. Turn back unto Me, and I turn back to you, Said Jehovah of Hosts. And ye have said, `In what do we turn back?'

8 U n uomo deruberà DIO? Eppure voi mi derubate e poi dite: "In che cosa ti abbiamo derubato?" Nelle decime e nelle offerte.

Doth man deceive God? but ye are deceiving Me, And ye have said: `In what have we deceived Thee?' The tithe and the heave-offering!

9 V oi siete colpiti di maledizione perché mi derubate, sí, tutta quanta la nazione.

With a curse ye are cursed! And Me ye are deceiving -- this nation -- all of it.

10 P ortate tutte le decime alla casa del tesoro, perché vi sia cibo nella mia casa, e poi mettetemi alla prova in questo». dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, «se io non vi aprirò le cateratte del cielo e non riverserò su di voi tanta benedizione che non avrete spazio sufficiente ove riporla.

Bring in all the tithe unto the treasure-house, And there is food in My house; When ye have tried Me, now, with this, Said Jehovah of Hosts, Do not I open to you the windows of heaven? Yea, I have emptied on you a blessing till there is no space.

11 I noltre sgriderò per voi il divoratore, perché non distrugga piú il frutto del vostro suolo, e la vostra vite non mancherà di portar frutto per voi nella campagna», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti.

And I have pushed for you against the consumer, And He doth not destroy to you the fruit of the ground, Nor miscarry to you doth the vine in the field, Said Jehovah of Hosts.

12 « Tutte le nazioni vi proclameranno beati perché sarete un paese di delizie», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti.

And declared you happy have all the nations, For ye are a delightful land, said Jehovah of Hosts.

13 « Avete usato parole dure contro di me», dice l'Eterno. «Eppure dite: "Che cosa abbiamo detto contro di te?"

Hard against Me have been your words, Said Jehovah, and ye have said: `What have we spoken against Thee?'

14 A vete detto: "E' vano servire DIO; quale guadagno c'è nell'osservare i suoi ordinamenti e ad andare vestiti a lutto davanti all'Eterno degli eserciti?

Ye have said, `A vain thing to serve God! And what gain when we kept His charge? And when we have gone in black, Because of Jehovah of Hosts?

15 P erciò noi proclamiamo beati i superbi. Non solo gli operatori d'iniquità prosperano, ma essi tentano pure DIO e sfuggono"».

And now, we are declaring the proud happy, Yea, built up have been those doing wickedness, Yea they have tempted God, and escape.'

16 A llora quelli che temevano l'Eterno si sono parlati l'uno all'altro. L'Eterno è stato attento ed ha ascoltato e un libro di ricordo è stato scritto davanti a lui per quelli che temono l'Eterno e onorano il suo nome.

Then have those fearing Jehovah spoken one to another, And Jehovah doth attend and hear, And written is a book of memorial before Him Of those fearing Jehovah, And of those esteeming His name.

17 « Essi saranno miei», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, «nel giorno in cui preparo il mio particolare tesoro, e li risparmierò, come un uomo risparmia il figlio che lo serve.

And they have been to Me, said Jehovah of Hosts, In the day that I am appointing -- a peculiar treasure, And I have had pity on them, As one hath pity on his son who is serving him.

18 A llora vedrete nuovamente la differenza che c'è fra il giusto e l'empio, fra colui che serve DIO e colui che non lo serve».

And ye have turned back and considered, Between the righteous and the wicked, Between the servant of God and him who is not His servant.
