1 E Gesú se ne andò al monte degli ulivi.

And at dawn he came again to the temple,

2 M a sul far del giorno tornò di nuovo nel tempio e tutto il popolo venne da lui ed egli, postosi a sedere, li ammaestrava.

and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;

3 A llora i farisei e gli scribi gli condussero una donna sorpresa in adulterio e postala nel mezzo

and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4 d issero a Gesú: «Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa sul fatto, mentre commetteva adulterio.

they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,

5 O ra, nella legge Mosé ci ha comandato di lapidare tali donne; ma tu, che ne dici?».

and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'

6 O r dicevano questo per metterlo alla prova e per aver di che accusarlo. Ma Gesú, fingendo di non sentire, chinatosi. scriveva col dito in terra.

and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,

7 E , come essi continuavano ad interrogarlo, egli si alzò e disse loro: «Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli per primo la pietra contro di lei».

and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'

8 P oi, chinatosi di nuovo, scriveva in terra.

and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,

9 Q uelli allora, udito ciò e convinti dalla coscienza, se ne andarono ad uno ad uno, cominciando dai piú vecchi fino agli ultimi; cosí Gesú fu lasciato solo con la donna, che stava là in mezzo.

and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 G esú dunque, alzatosi e non vedendo altri che la donna, le disse: «Donna dove sono quelli che ti accusavano? Nessuno ti ha condannata?».

And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'

11 E d ella rispose: «Nessuno, Signore». Gesú allora le disse: «Neppure io ti condanno; va' e non peccare piú».

and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'

12 E Gesú di nuovo parlò loro, dicendo: «Io sono la luce del mondo; chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre ma avrà la luce della vita».

Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'

13 A llora i farisei gli dissero: «Tu testimoni di te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è verace»

The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'

14 G esú rispose e disse loro: «Anche se testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza è verace, perché so da dove son venuto e dove vado; voi invece, non sapete né da dove vengo, né dove vado.

Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.

15 V oi giudicate secondo la carne, i non giudico nessuno.

`Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,

16 E , anche se giudico, il mio giudizio è verace, perché io non sono solo, ma sono io e il Padre che mi ha mandato.

and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;

17 O r anche nella vostra legge è scritto che la testimonianza di due uomini è verace.

and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;

18 S ono io che testimonio di me stesso, ed anche il Padre che mi ha mandato testimonia di me».

I am who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'

19 G li dissero allora: «Dov'è tuo Padre?». Gesú rispose: «Voi non conoscete né me né il Padre mio; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il Padre mio»,

They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'

20 G esú pronunziò queste parole nel luogo del tesoro, insegnando nel tempio; e nessuno lo prese, perché non era ancora venuta la sua ora.

These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;

21 G esú dunque disse loro di nuovo: «Io me ne vado e voi mi cercherete, e morirete nel vostro peccato. Là dove vado io, voi non potete venire».

therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'

22 D icevano perciò i Giudei: «Vuole forse uccidersi, perché dice: "Dove vado io, voi non potete venire"?».

The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'

23 E d egli disse loro: «Voi siete di quaggiú, mentre io sono di lassú; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.

and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;

24 P erciò vi ho detto che voi morirete nei vostri peccati, perché se non credete che io sono, voi morirete nei vostri peccati».

I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am, ye shall die in your sins.'

25 A llora essi gli dissero: «Chi sei tu?». E Gesú disse loro: «Proprio quello che vi dico.

They said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;

26 I o ho, a vostro riguardo, molte cose da dire e da giudicare; ma colui che mi ha mandato è verace, e le cose che ho udito da lui, le dico al mondo».

many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'

27 E ssi non capirono che parlava loro del Padre.

They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;

28 Q uindi Gesú disse loro: «Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, allora conoscerete che io sono e che non faccio nulla da me stesso, ma dico queste cose come il Padre mi ha insegnato.

Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

29 E colui che mi ha mandato è con me il Padre non mi ha lasciato solo, perché faccio continuamente le cose che gli piacciono».

and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'

30 M entre egli diceva queste cose, molti credettero in lui.

As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;

31 G esú disse allora ai Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se dimorate nella mia parola, siete veramente miei discepoli;

Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

32 c onoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi».

and the truth shall make you free.'

33 E ssi gli risposero: «Noi siamo progenie di Abrahamo e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno; come puoi tu dire: "Diventerete liberi"?».

They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'

34 G esú rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi fa il peccato è schiavo del peccato.

Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,

35 O r lo schiavo non rimane sempre nella casa; il figlio invece vi rimane per sempre.

and the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;

36 S e dunque il Figlio vi farà liberi sarete veramente liberi».

if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.

37 « Io so che siete progenie di Abrahamo, ma cercate di uccidermi, perché la mia parola non trova posto in voi.

`I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;

38 I o parlo di ciò che ho visto presso il Padre mio, e anche voi fate le cose che avete visto presso il padre vostro».

I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'

39 E ssi, rispondendo, gli dissero: «Il padre nostro è Abrahamo». Gesú disse loro: «Se foste figli di Abrahamo, fareste le opere di Abrahamo;

They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;

40 m a ora cercate di uccidere me, uno che vi ha detto la verità che ho udito da Dio; Abrahamo non fece questo.

and now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;

41 V oi fate le opere del padre vostro». Perciò essi gli dissero: «Noi non siamo nati da fornicazione; noi abbiamo un solo Padre: Dio».

ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'

42 A llora Gesú disse loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, mi amereste, perché io sono proceduto e sono venuto da Dio; non sono venuto infatti da me stesso, ma è lui che mi ha mandato.

Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;

43 P erché non comprendete il mio parlare? Perché non potete ascoltare la mia parola.

wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.

44 V oi siete dal diavolo, che è vostro padre, e volete fare i desideri del padre vostro; egli fu omicida fin dal principio e non è rimasto fermo nella verità, perché in lui non c'è verità. Quando dice il falso, parla del suo perché è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.

`Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.

45 A me invece, perché vi dico la verità, voi non credete.

`And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.

46 C hi di voi mi convince di peccato? Se dico la verità, perché non mi credete?

Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?

47 C hi è da Dio, ascolta le parole di Dio; perciò voi non le ascoltate, perché non siete da Dio».

he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'

48 A llora i Giudei gli risposero e gli dissero: «Non diciamo con ragione che sei un Samaritano e che hai un demone?».

The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'

49 G esú rispose: «Io non ho un demone, ma onoro il Padre mio; voi invece mi disonorate.

Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;

50 O r io non cerco la mia gloria; v'è uno che la cerca e che giudica.

and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;

51 I n verità, in verità vi dico che, se uno osserva la mia parola, non vedrà mai la morte in eterno»,

verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'

52 G li dissero dunque i Giudei: «Ora conosciamo che tu hai un demone. Abrahamo e i profeti sono morti, tu invece dici: "Se uno osserva la mia parola, non gusterà mai la morte in eterno".

The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!

53 S ei tu piú grande del padre nostro Abrahamo, il quale è morto? Anche i profeti sono morti; chi pretendi di essere?».

Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'

54 G esú rispose: «Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria non è nulla. E il mio Padre che mi glorifica, quello che voi dite essere vostro Dio.

Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;

55 M a voi non l'avete conosciuto, io però lo conosco e se dicessi di non conoscerlo, sarei un bugiardo come voi; ma io lo conosco e osservo la sua parola.

and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;

56 A brahamo, vostro padre, giubilò nella speranza di vedere il mio giorno; lo vide e se ne rallegrò».

Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'

57 I Giudei dunque gli dissero: «Tu non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai visto Abrahamo?».

The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'

58 G esú disse loro: «In verità, in verità io vi dico: Prima che Abrahamo fosse nato, io sono».

Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'

59 A llora essi presero delle pietre, per lanciarle addosso a lui; ma Gesú si nascose e uscí dal tempio, passando in mezzo a loro, e cosí se ne andò.

they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
