1 A nd at dawn he came again to the temple,

E Gesú se ne andò al monte degli ulivi.

2 a nd all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;

Ma sul far del giorno tornò di nuovo nel tempio e tutto il popolo venne da lui ed egli, postosi a sedere, li ammaestrava.

3 a nd the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

Allora i farisei e gli scribi gli condussero una donna sorpresa in adulterio e postala nel mezzo

4 t hey say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,

dissero a Gesú: «Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa sul fatto, mentre commetteva adulterio.

5 a nd in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'

Ora, nella legge Mosé ci ha comandato di lapidare tali donne; ma tu, che ne dici?».

6 a nd this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,

Or dicevano questo per metterlo alla prova e per aver di che accusarlo. Ma Gesú, fingendo di non sentire, chinatosi. scriveva col dito in terra.

7 a nd when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'

E, come essi continuavano ad interrogarlo, egli si alzò e disse loro: «Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli per primo la pietra contro di lei».

8 a nd again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,

Poi, chinatosi di nuovo, scriveva in terra.

9 a nd they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

Quelli allora, udito ciò e convinti dalla coscienza, se ne andarono ad uno ad uno, cominciando dai piú vecchi fino agli ultimi; cosí Gesú fu lasciato solo con la donna, che stava là in mezzo.

10 A nd Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'

Gesú dunque, alzatosi e non vedendo altri che la donna, le disse: «Donna dove sono quelli che ti accusavano? Nessuno ti ha condannata?».

11 a nd she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'

Ed ella rispose: «Nessuno, Signore». Gesú allora le disse: «Neppure io ti condanno; va' e non peccare piú».

12 A gain, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'

E Gesú di nuovo parlò loro, dicendo: «Io sono la luce del mondo; chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre ma avrà la luce della vita».

13 T he Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'

Allora i farisei gli dissero: «Tu testimoni di te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è verace»

14 J esus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.

Gesú rispose e disse loro: «Anche se testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza è verace, perché so da dove son venuto e dove vado; voi invece, non sapete né da dove vengo, né dove vado.

15 ` Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,

Voi giudicate secondo la carne, i non giudico nessuno.

16 a nd even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;

E, anche se giudico, il mio giudizio è verace, perché io non sono solo, ma sono io e il Padre che mi ha mandato.

17 a nd also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;

Or anche nella vostra legge è scritto che la testimonianza di due uomini è verace.

18 I am who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'

Sono io che testimonio di me stesso, ed anche il Padre che mi ha mandato testimonia di me».

19 T hey said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'

Gli dissero allora: «Dov'è tuo Padre?». Gesú rispose: «Voi non conoscete né me né il Padre mio; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il Padre mio»,

20 T hese sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;

Gesú pronunziò queste parole nel luogo del tesoro, insegnando nel tempio; e nessuno lo prese, perché non era ancora venuta la sua ora.

21 t herefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'

Gesú dunque disse loro di nuovo: «Io me ne vado e voi mi cercherete, e morirete nel vostro peccato. Là dove vado io, voi non potete venire».

22 T he Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'

Dicevano perciò i Giudei: «Vuole forse uccidersi, perché dice: "Dove vado io, voi non potete venire"?».

23 a nd he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;

Ed egli disse loro: «Voi siete di quaggiú, mentre io sono di lassú; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.

24 I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am, ye shall die in your sins.'

Perciò vi ho detto che voi morirete nei vostri peccati, perché se non credete che io sono, voi morirete nei vostri peccati».

25 T hey said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;

Allora essi gli dissero: «Chi sei tu?». E Gesú disse loro: «Proprio quello che vi dico.

26 m any things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'

Io ho, a vostro riguardo, molte cose da dire e da giudicare; ma colui che mi ha mandato è verace, e le cose che ho udito da lui, le dico al mondo».

27 T hey knew not that of the Father he spake to them;

Essi non capirono che parlava loro del Padre.

28 J esus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

Quindi Gesú disse loro: «Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, allora conoscerete che io sono e che non faccio nulla da me stesso, ma dico queste cose come il Padre mi ha insegnato.

29 a nd He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'

E colui che mi ha mandato è con me il Padre non mi ha lasciato solo, perché faccio continuamente le cose che gli piacciono».

30 A s he is speaking these things, many believed in him;

Mentre egli diceva queste cose, molti credettero in lui.

31 J esus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

Gesú disse allora ai Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se dimorate nella mia parola, siete veramente miei discepoli;

32 a nd the truth shall make you free.'

conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi».

33 T hey answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'

Essi gli risposero: «Noi siamo progenie di Abrahamo e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno; come puoi tu dire: "Diventerete liberi"?».

34 J esus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,

Gesú rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi fa il peccato è schiavo del peccato.

35 a nd the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;

Or lo schiavo non rimane sempre nella casa; il figlio invece vi rimane per sempre.

36 i f then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.

Se dunque il Figlio vi farà liberi sarete veramente liberi».

37 ` I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;

«Io so che siete progenie di Abrahamo, ma cercate di uccidermi, perché la mia parola non trova posto in voi.

38 I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'

Io parlo di ciò che ho visto presso il Padre mio, e anche voi fate le cose che avete visto presso il padre vostro».

39 T hey answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;

Essi, rispondendo, gli dissero: «Il padre nostro è Abrahamo». Gesú disse loro: «Se foste figli di Abrahamo, fareste le opere di Abrahamo;

40 a nd now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;

ma ora cercate di uccidere me, uno che vi ha detto la verità che ho udito da Dio; Abrahamo non fece questo.

41 y e do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'

Voi fate le opere del padre vostro». Perciò essi gli dissero: «Noi non siamo nati da fornicazione; noi abbiamo un solo Padre: Dio».

42 J esus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;

Allora Gesú disse loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, mi amereste, perché io sono proceduto e sono venuto da Dio; non sono venuto infatti da me stesso, ma è lui che mi ha mandato.

43 w herefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.

Perché non comprendete il mio parlare? Perché non potete ascoltare la mia parola.

44 ` Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.

Voi siete dal diavolo, che è vostro padre, e volete fare i desideri del padre vostro; egli fu omicida fin dal principio e non è rimasto fermo nella verità, perché in lui non c'è verità. Quando dice il falso, parla del suo perché è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.

45 ` And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.

A me invece, perché vi dico la verità, voi non credete.

46 W ho of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?

Chi di voi mi convince di peccato? Se dico la verità, perché non mi credete?

47 h e who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'

Chi è da Dio, ascolta le parole di Dio; perciò voi non le ascoltate, perché non siete da Dio».

48 T he Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'

Allora i Giudei gli risposero e gli dissero: «Non diciamo con ragione che sei un Samaritano e che hai un demone?».

49 J esus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;

Gesú rispose: «Io non ho un demone, ma onoro il Padre mio; voi invece mi disonorate.

50 a nd I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;

Or io non cerco la mia gloria; v'è uno che la cerca e che giudica.

51 v erily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'

In verità, in verità vi dico che, se uno osserva la mia parola, non vedrà mai la morte in eterno»,

52 T he Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!

Gli dissero dunque i Giudei: «Ora conosciamo che tu hai un demone. Abrahamo e i profeti sono morti, tu invece dici: "Se uno osserva la mia parola, non gusterà mai la morte in eterno".

53 A rt thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'

Sei tu piú grande del padre nostro Abrahamo, il quale è morto? Anche i profeti sono morti; chi pretendi di essere?».

54 J esus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;

Gesú rispose: «Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria non è nulla. E il mio Padre che mi glorifica, quello che voi dite essere vostro Dio.

55 a nd ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;

Ma voi non l'avete conosciuto, io però lo conosco e se dicessi di non conoscerlo, sarei un bugiardo come voi; ma io lo conosco e osservo la sua parola.

56 A braham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'

Abrahamo, vostro padre, giubilò nella speranza di vedere il mio giorno; lo vide e se ne rallegrò».

57 T he Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'

I Giudei dunque gli dissero: «Tu non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai visto Abrahamo?».

58 J esus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'

Gesú disse loro: «In verità, in verità io vi dico: Prima che Abrahamo fosse nato, io sono».

59 t hey took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Allora essi presero delle pietre, per lanciarle addosso a lui; ma Gesú si nascose e uscí dal tempio, passando in mezzo a loro, e cosí se ne andò.
