1 A n aged person thou mayest not rebuke, but be entreating as a father; younger persons as brethren;

Non riprendere aspramente un anziano, ma esortalo come un padre e i piú giovani come fratelli,

2 a ged women as mothers, younger ones as sisters -- in all purity;

le donne anziane come madri, e le giovani come sorelle, in tutta castità.

3 h onour widows who are really widows;

Onora le vedove che sono veramente vedove.

4 a nd if any widow have children or grandchildren, let them learn first to their own house to show piety, and to give back a recompense to the parents, for this is right and acceptable before God.

Ma se una vedova ha dei figli o dei nipoti, questi imparino prima a praticare la pietà verso quelli della propria casa e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, perché questo è buono ed accettevole davanti a Dio.

5 A nd she who is really a widow and desolate, hath hoped upon God, and doth remain in the supplications and in the prayers night and day,

Or quella che è veramente vedova, ed è rimasta sola, pone la sua fiducia in Dio e persevera nelle preghiere e nelle suppliche notte e giorno.

6 a nd she who is given to luxury, living -- hath died;

Ma quella che vive sregolatamente, anche se vive, è morta.

7 a nd these things charge, that they may be blameless;

Raccomanda anche queste cose, affinché siano irreprensibili.

8 a nd if any one for his own -- and especially for those of the household -- doth not provide, the faith he hath denied, and than an unbeliever he is worse.

Ma se uno non provvede ai suoi e principalmente a quelli di casa sua, egli ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un non credente.

9 A widow -- let her not be enrolled under sixty years of age, having been a wife of one husband,

Una vedova sia iscritta nella lista delle vedove, quando abbia non meno di sessant'anni, sia stata moglie di un solo marito,

10 i n good works being testified to: if she brought up children, if she entertained strangers, if saints' feet she washed, if those in tribulation she relieved, if every good work she followed after;

e abbia testimonianza di opere buone: se ha nutrito i suoi figli, se ha ospitato i forestieri, se ha lavato i piedi ai santi, se ha soccorso gli afflitti, se si è data continuamente ad ogni opera buona.

11 a nd younger widows be refusing, for when they may revel against the Christ, they wish to marry,

Ma rifiuta le vedove piú giovani perché, dopo aver alimentato desideri indegni di Cristo, vogliono maritarsi

12 h aving judgment, because the first faith they did cast away,

attirando su di sé una condanna, perché hanno violato la prima fede.

13 a nd at the same time also, they learn idle, going about the houses; and not only idle, but also tattlers and busybodies, speaking the things they ought not;

Inoltre esse imparano anche ad essere oziose e ad andare in giro per le case, ed ancor peggio, non solo ad essere oziose, ma anche pettegole e indiscrete e a parlare di cose inutili.

14 I wish, therefore, younger ones to marry, to bear children, to be mistress of the house, to give no occasion to the opposer to reviling;

Voglio dunque che le giovani vedove si maritino, abbiano figli, si prendano cura della famiglia e non diano all'avversario alcuna occasione di maldicenza,

15 f or already certain did turn aside after the Adversary.

alcune infatti si sono già sviate per seguire Satana.

16 I f any believing man or believing woman have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the assembly be burdened, that those really widows it may relieve.

Se un credente, uomo o donna, ha delle vedove, provveda loro, e non ne sia gravata la chiesa, affinché possa soccorrere quelle che sono veramente vedove.

17 T he well-leading elders of double honour let them be counted worthy, especially those labouring in word and teaching,

Gli anziani che esercitano bene la presidenza siano reputati degni di un doppio onore, principalmente quelli che si affaticano nella parola e nell'insegnamento.

18 f or the Writing saith, `An ox treading out thou shalt not muzzle,' and `Worthy the workman of his reward.'

La Scrittura infatti dice: «Non mettere la museruola al bue che trebbia», ed ancora: «L'operaio è degno del suo salario».

19 A gainst an elder an accusation receive not, except upon two or three witnesses.

Non ricevere alcuna accusa contro un anziano, se non è confermata da due o tre testimoni.

20 T hose sinning, reprove before all, that the others also may have fear;

Quelli che peccano, riprendili alla presenza di tutti, affinché anche gli altri abbiano timore.

21 I testify fully, before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the choice messengers, that these things thou mayest keep, without forejudging, doing nothing by partiality.

lo ti scongiuro davanti a Dio, al Signore Gesú Cristo e agli angeli eletti, che tu osservi queste cose senza pregiudizio, non facendo nulla con parzialità.

22 B e laying hands quickly on no one, nor be having fellowship with sins of others; be keeping thyself pure;

Non imporre con precipitazione le mani ad alcuno e non partecipare ai peccati altrui; conserva te stesso puro.

23 n o longer be drinking water, but a little wine be using, because of thy stomach and of thine often infirmities;

Non bere piú soltanto acqua, ma fa' uso di un po' di vino a causa del tuo stomaco e per le tue frequenti infermità.

24 o f certain men the sins are manifest beforehand, leading before to judgment, and certain also they follow after;

In alcuni uomini i peccati sono manifesti e li precedono al giudizio, mentre in altri li seguono.

25 i n like manner also the right works are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise are not able to be hid.

Cosí pure le buone opere di alcuni sono manifeste; ed anche quando non lo sono, non possono rimanere nascoste.
