1 H ast thou known the time of The bearing of the wild goats of the rock? The bringing forth of hinds thou dost mark!

Conosci tu il tempo in cui partoriscono le capre delle rocce o hai forse osservato il parto delle cerve?

2 T hou dost number the months they fulfil? And thou hast known the time of their bringing forth!

Sai tu contare i mesi in cui portano a termine la loro gravidanza, o conosci tu il tempo in cui devono partorire?

3 T hey bow down, Their young ones they bring forth safely, Their pangs they cast forth.

Si accovacciano e danno alla luce i loro piccoli, mettendo cosí fine alle loro doglie.

4 S afe are their young ones, They grow up in the field, they have gone out, And have not returned to them.

I loro piccoli si fanno forti, crescono all'aperto, se ne vanno e non ritornano piú da esse.

5 W ho hath sent forth the wild ass free? Yea, the bands of the wild ass who opened?

Chi lascia andar libero l'onàgro, chi ha sciolto i legami all'asino selvatico,

6 W hose house I have made the wilderness, And his dwellings the barren land,

al quale ho assegnato come dimora il deserto e la terra salata per abitazione?

7 H e doth laugh at the multitude of a city, The cries of an exactor he heareth not.

Egli disprezza il frastuono della città e non ode grida di alcun padrone.

8 T he range of mountains his pasture, And after every green thing he seeketh.

Le ampie distese di montagna sono il suo pascolo, e va in cerca di tutto ciò che è verde.

9 I s a Reem willing to serve thee? Doth he lodge by thy crib?

Il bufalo è forse disposto a servirti o a passare la notte presso la tua mangiatoia?

10 D ost thou bind a Reem in a furrow his thick band? Doth he harrow valleys after thee?

Puoi forse legare il bufalo con la corda per arare nel solco, o erpicherà le valli dietro a te?

11 D ost thou trust in him because great his power? And dost thou leave unto him thy labour?

Ti fiderai di lui, perché la sua forza è grande, o lascerai a lui il tuo lavoro

12 D ost thou trust in him That he doth bring back thy seed? And thy threshing-floor doth gather ?

Conterai su di lui per portare a casa il tuo grano e per ammassarlo sull'aia?

13 T he wing of the rattling ones exulteth, Whether the pinion of the ostrich or hawk.

Le ali dello struzzo sbattono festosamente, ma non sono certo le ali e le piume della cicogna.

14 F or she leaveth on the earth her eggs, And on the dust she doth warm them,

Esso infatti abbandona le proprie uova per terra e le lascia riscaldare nella polvere,

15 A nd she forgetteth that a foot may press it, And a beast of the field tread it down.

dimenticando che un piede può schiacciarle o una bestia dei campi calpestarle.

16 H er young ones it hath hardened without her, In vain her labour without fear.

Tratta duramente i suoi piccoli, come se non fossero suoi; ma la sua fatica senza alcun interesse è vana,

17 F or God hath caused her to forget wisdom, And He hath not given a portion To her in understanding:

perché Dio la privato di sapienza e non gli ha impartito intelligenza.

18 A t the time on high she lifteth herself up, She laugheth at the horse and at his rider.

Ma quando si alza in piedi per scappare, si beffa del cavallo e del suo cavaliere.

19 D ost thou give to the horse might? Dost thou clothe his neck a mane?

Sei tu che hai dato al cavallo la forza e che hai rivestito il suo collo con una fremente criniera?

20 D ost thou cause him to rush as a locust? The majesty of his snorting terrible.

Sei tu che lo fai saltare come una locusta? Il fiero suo nitrito incute spavento.

21 T hey dig in a valley, and he rejoiceth in power, He goeth forth to meet the armour.

Scalpita nella valle rallegrandosi nella sua forza; e si slancia in mezzo alla mischia di armi.

22 H e laugheth at fear, and is not affrighted, And he turneth not back from the face of the sword.

Sprezza la paura e non teme, né indietreggia davanti alla spada.

23 A gainst him rattle doth quiver, The flame of a spear, and a halbert.

Su di lui risuona la faretra, la folgorante lancia e il giavellotto.

24 W ith trembling and rage he swalloweth the ground, And remaineth not stedfast Because of the sound of a trumpet.

Con ardore e impeto divora le distanze e non sta piú fermo quando suona la tromba.

25 A mong the trumpets he saith, Aha, And from afar he doth smell battle, Roaring of princes and shouting.

Al primo squillo di tromba dice: "Aha!" e fiuta da lontano la battaglia, la voce tonante dei capitani e il grido di guerra.

26 B y thine understanding flieth a hawk? Spreadeth he his wings to the south?

E' forse per la tua intelligenza che si alza in volo lo sparviero e spiega le sue ali verso il sud?

27 A t thy command goeth an eagle up high? Or lifteth he up his nest?

E' al tuo comando che l'aquila si leva in alto e fa il suo nido nei luoghi elevati

28 A rock he doth inhabit, Yea, he lodgeth on the tooth of a rock, and fortress.

Abita sulle rocce e rimane su rupi scoscese.

29 F rom thence he hath sought food, To a far off place his eyes look attentively,

Da lassú spia la preda e i suoi occhi scrutano lontano.

30 A nd his brood gulph up blood, And where the pierced -- there he!

I suoi piccoli succhiano sangue e dove sono gli uccisi, là essa si trova».
