1 H ast thou known the time of The bearing of the wild goats of the rock? The bringing forth of hinds thou dost mark!

2 T hou dost number the months they fulfil? And thou hast known the time of their bringing forth!

¿Puedes contar los meses de su gestación, o conoces el tiempo en que han de parir?

3 T hey bow down, Their young ones they bring forth safely, Their pangs they cast forth.

Se encorvan, paren sus crías, y se libran de sus dolores de parto.

4 S afe are their young ones, They grow up in the field, they have gone out, And have not returned to them.

Sus crías se fortalecen, crecen en campo abierto; se van y no vuelven a ellas.

5 W ho hath sent forth the wild ass free? Yea, the bands of the wild ass who opened?

¿Quién dejó en libertad al asno montés ? ¿Y quién soltó las ataduras del asno veloz,

6 W hose house I have made the wilderness, And his dwellings the barren land,

al cual di por hogar el desierto, y por morada la tierra salada ?

7 H e doth laugh at the multitude of a city, The cries of an exactor he heareth not.

Se burla del tumulto de la ciudad, no escucha los gritos del arriero.

8 T he range of mountains his pasture, And after every green thing he seeketh.

Explora los montes buscando su pasto, y anda tras toda hierba verde.

9 I s a Reem willing to serve thee? Doth he lodge by thy crib?

¿Consentirá en servirte el búfalo, o pasará la noche en tu pesebre?

10 D ost thou bind a Reem in a furrow his thick band? Doth he harrow valleys after thee?

¿Puedes atar al búfalo con coyundas para el surco, o rastrillará los valles en pos de ti?

11 D ost thou trust in him because great his power? And dost thou leave unto him thy labour?

¿Confiarás en él por ser grande su fuerza y le confiarás tu labor?

12 D ost thou trust in him That he doth bring back thy seed? And thy threshing-floor doth gather ?

¿Tendrás fe en él de que te devolverá tu grano, y de que lo recogerá de tu era?

13 T he wing of the rattling ones exulteth, Whether the pinion of the ostrich or hawk.

Baten alegres las alas del avestruz, ¿acaso con el ala y plumaje del amor ?

14 F or she leaveth on the earth her eggs, And on the dust she doth warm them,

Porque abandona sus huevos en la tierra, y sobre el polvo los calienta;

15 A nd she forgetteth that a foot may press it, And a beast of the field tread it down.

se olvida de que algún pie los puede aplastar, o una bestia salvaje los puede pisotear.

16 H er young ones it hath hardened without her, In vain her labour without fear.

Trata a sus hijos con crueldad, como si no fueran suyos; aunque su trabajo sea en vano, le es indiferente;

17 F or God hath caused her to forget wisdom, And He hath not given a portion To her in understanding:

porque Dios le ha hecho olvidar la sabiduría, y no le ha dado su porción de inteligencia.

18 A t the time on high she lifteth herself up, She laugheth at the horse and at his rider.

Pero cuando se levanta en alto, se burla del caballo y de su jinete.

19 D ost thou give to the horse might? Dost thou clothe his neck a mane?

¿Das tú al caballo su fuerza? ¿Revistes su cuello de crines?

20 D ost thou cause him to rush as a locust? The majesty of his snorting terrible.

¿Le haces saltar como la langosta? Terrible es su formidable resoplido;

21 T hey dig in a valley, and he rejoiceth in power, He goeth forth to meet the armour.

escarba en el valle, y se regocija en su fuerza; sale al encuentro de las armas.

22 H e laugheth at fear, and is not affrighted, And he turneth not back from the face of the sword.

Se burla del temor y no se acobarda, ni retrocede ante la espada.

23 A gainst him rattle doth quiver, The flame of a spear, and a halbert.

Resuena contra él la aljaba, la lanza reluciente y la jabalina.

24 W ith trembling and rage he swalloweth the ground, And remaineth not stedfast Because of the sound of a trumpet.

Con ímpetu y furor corre sobre la tierra; y no se está quieto al sonido de la trompeta.

25 A mong the trumpets he saith, Aha, And from afar he doth smell battle, Roaring of princes and shouting.

Cada vez que la trompeta suena, como que dice: “¡Ea!”, y desde lejos olfatea la batalla, las voces atronadoras de los capitanes y el grito de guerra.

26 B y thine understanding flieth a hawk? Spreadeth he his wings to the south?

¿Acaso por tu sabiduría se eleva el gavilán, extendiendo sus alas hacia el sur?

27 A t thy command goeth an eagle up high? Or lifteth he up his nest?

¿Acaso a tu mandato se remonta el águila y hace en las alturas su nido ?

28 A rock he doth inhabit, Yea, he lodgeth on the tooth of a rock, and fortress.

En la peña mora y se aloja, sobre la cima del despeñadero, lugar inaccesible.

29 F rom thence he hath sought food, To a far off place his eyes look attentively,

Desde allí acecha la presa; desde muy lejos sus ojos la divisan.

30 A nd his brood gulph up blood, And where the pierced -- there he!

Sus polluelos chupan la sangre; y donde hay muertos, allí está ella.
