1 A nd it cometh to pass, in the month of Nisan, the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, wine before him, and I lift up the wine, and give to the king, and I had not been sad before him;

Aconteció que en el mes de Nisán, en el año veinte del rey Artajerjes, estando ya el vino delante de él, tomé el vino y se lo di al rey. Yo nunca había estado triste en su presencia,

2 a nd the king saith to me, `Wherefore thy face sad, and thou not sick? this is nothing except sadness of heart;' and I fear very much,

y el rey me dijo: ¿Por qué está triste tu rostro? Tú no estás enfermo; eso no es más que tristeza de corazón. Entonces tuve mucho temor,

3 a nd say to the king, `Let the king to the age live! wherefore should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of the graves of my fathers, a waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?'

y dije al rey: Viva para siempre el rey. ¿Cómo no ha de estar triste mi rostro cuando la ciudad, lugar de los sepulcros de mis padres, está desolada y sus puertas han sido consumidas por el fuego ?

4 A nd the king saith to me, `For what art thou seeking?' and I pray unto the God of the heavens,

El rey me dijo: ¿Qué es lo que pides? Entonces oré al Dios del cielo,

5 a nd say to the king, `If to the king good, and if thy servant be pleasing before thee, that thou send me unto Judah, unto the city of the graves of my fathers, and I built it.'

y respondí al rey: Si le place al rey, y si tu siervo ha hallado gracia delante de ti, envíame a Judá, a la ciudad de los sepulcros de mis padres, para que yo la reedifique.

6 A nd the king saith to me (and the queen is sitting near him), `How long is thy journey? and when dost thou return?' and it is good before the king, and he sendeth me away, and I set to him a time.

Entonces el rey me dijo, estando la reina sentada junto a él: ¿Cuánto durará tu viaje, y cuándo volverás? Y le agradó al rey enviarme, y yo le di un plazo fijo.

7 A nd I say to the king, `If to the king good, letters let be given to me for the governors beyond the River, that they let me pass over till that I come in unto Judah:

Y dije al rey: Si le agrada al rey, que se me den cartas para los gobernadores de las provincias más allá del Río, para que me dejen pasar hasta que llegue a Judá,

8 a nd a letter unto Asaph, keeper of the paradise that the king hath, that he give to me trees for beams the gates of the palace that the house hath, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I enter;' and the king giveth to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

y una carta para Asaf, guarda del bosque del rey, a fin de que me dé madera para hacer las vigas de las puertas de la fortaleza que está junto al templo, para la muralla de la ciudad y para la casa a la cual iré. Y el rey me lo concedió, porque la mano bondadosa de mi Dios estaba sobre mí.

9 A nd I come in unto the governors beyond the River, and give to them the letters of the king; and the king sendeth with me heads of a force, and horsemen;

Fui entonces a los gobernadores de más allá del Río y les entregué las cartas del rey. Y el rey había enviado conmigo oficiales del ejército y hombres de a caballo.

10 a nd Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and it is evil to them -- a great evil -- that a man hath come in to seek good for the sons of Israel.

Cuando se enteraron Sanbalat horonita y Tobías el oficial amonita, les disgustó mucho que alguien hubiera venido a procurar el bienestar de los hijos de Israel.

11 A nd I come in unto Jerusalem, and I am there three days,

Y llegué a Jerusalén y estuve allí tres días.

12 a nd I rise by night, I and a few men with me, and have not declared to a man what my God is giving unto my heart to do for Jerusalem, and there is no beast with me except the beast on which I am riding.

Y me levanté de noche, yo y unos pocos hombres conmigo, pero no informé a nadie lo que mi Dios había puesto en mi corazón que hiciera por Jerusalén, y no había ningún animal conmigo excepto el animal sobre el cual iba yo montado.

13 A nd I go out through the gate of the valley by night, and unto the front of the fountain of the dragon, and unto the gate of the dunghill, and I am measuring about the walls of Jerusalem, that are broken down, and its gates consumed with fire.

Salí de noche por la puerta del Valle hacia la fuente del Dragón y hacia la puerta del Muladar, inspeccionando las murallas de Jerusalén que estaban derribadas y sus puertas que estaban consumidas por el fuego.

14 A nd I pass over unto the gate of the fountain, and unto the pool of the king, and there is no place for the beast under me to pass over,

Pasé luego hacia la puerta de la Fuente y hacia el estanque del Rey, pero no había lugar para que pasara mi cabalgadura.

15 a nd I am going up through the brook by night, and am measuring about the wall, and turn back, and come in through the gate of the valley, and turn back.

Y subí de noche por el torrente e inspeccioné la muralla. Entonces entré de nuevo por la puerta del Valle y regresé.

16 A nd the prefects have not known whither I have gone, and what I am doing; and to the Jews, and to the priests, and to the freemen, and to the prefects, and to the rest of those doing the work, hitherto I have not declared;

Los oficiales no sabían adónde yo había ido ni qué había hecho, ni tampoco se lo había hecho saber todavía a los judíos, ni a los sacerdotes, ni a los nobles, ni a los oficiales, ni a los demás que hacían la obra.

17 a nd I say unto them, `Ye are seeing the evil that we are in, in that Jerusalem waste, and its gates have been burnt with fire; come and we build the wall of Jerusalem, and we are not any more a reproach.'

Entonces les dije: Vosotros veis la mala situación en que estamos, que Jerusalén está desolada y sus puertas quemadas a fuego. Venid, reedifiquemos la muralla de Jerusalén para que ya no seamos un oprobio.

18 A nd I declare to them the hand of my God that is good upon me, and also the words of the king that he said to me, and they say, `Let us rise, and we have built;' and they strengthen their hands for good.

Y les conté cómo la mano de mi Dios había sido bondadosa conmigo, y también las palabras que el rey me había dicho. Entonces dijeron: Levantémonos y edifiquemos. Y esforzaron sus manos en la buena obra.

19 A nd Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, and they mock at us, and despise us, and say, `What this thing that ye are doing? against the king are ye rebelling?'

Pero cuando se enteraron Sanbalat horonita, Tobías el oficial amonita y Gesem el árabe, se burlaron de nosotros, nos despreciaron y dijeron: ¿Qué es esto que estáis haciendo? ¿Os rebeláis contra el rey ?

20 A nd I return them word, and say to them, `The God of the heavens -- He doth give prosperity to us, and we His servants rise and have built; and to you there is no portion, and right, and memorial in Jerusalem.'

Y yo les respondí, y les dije: El Dios del cielo nos dará éxito; por tanto, nosotros sus siervos nos levantaremos y edificaremos, pero vosotros no tenéis parte ni derecho ni memorial en Jerusalén.
