Como espina que se clava en la mano de un borracho, tal es el proverbio en boca de los necios.

10 G reat the Former of all, And He is rewarding a fool, And is rewarding transgressors.

Como arquero que a todos hiere, así es el que toma a sueldo al necio o a los que pasan.

11 A s a dog hath returned to its vomit, A fool is repeating his folly.

Como perro que vuelve a su vómito es el necio que repite su necedad.

12 T hou hast seen a man wise in his own eyes, More hope of a fool than of him!

¿Has visto a un hombre que se tiene por sabio ? Más esperanza hay para el necio que para él.

El perezoso dice: Hay un león en el camino; hay un león en medio de la plaza.

Como la puerta gira sobre sus goznes, así da vueltas el perezoso en su cama.

15 T he slothful hath hid his hand in a dish, He is weary of bringing it back to his mouth.

El perezoso mete la mano en el plato, pero se fatiga de llevársela a la boca.

16 W iser the slothful in his own eyes, Than seven returning a reason.

El perezoso es más sabio ante sus propios ojos que siete que den una respuesta discreta.

17 L aying hold on the ears of a dog, a passer-by making himself wrath for strife not his own.

Como el que toma un perro por las orejas, así es el que pasa y se entremete en contienda que no es suya.

18 A s pretending to be feeble, Who is casting sparks, arrows, and death,

Como el enloquecido que lanza teas encendidas, flechas y muerte,

19 S o hath a man deceived his neighbour, And hath said, `Am not I playing?'

así es el hombre que engaña a su prójimo, y dice: ¿Acaso no estaba yo bromeando ?

20 W ithout wood is fire going out, And without a tale-bearer, contention ceaseth,

Por falta de leña se apaga el fuego, y donde no hay chismoso, se calma la contienda.

21 C oal to burning coals, and wood to fire, And a man of contentions to kindle strife.

Como carbón para las brasas y leña para el fuego, así es el hombre rencilloso para encender contiendas.

22 T he words of a tale-bearer as self-inflicted wounds, And they have gone down the inner parts of the heart.

Las palabras del chismoso son como bocados deliciosos, y penetran hasta el fondo de las entrañas.

23 S ilver of dross spread over potsherd, burning lips and an evil heart.

Como vasija de barro revestida de escoria de plata, así son los labios ardientes y el corazón perverso.

24 B y his lips doth a hater dissemble, And in his heart he placeth deceit,

El que odia, disimula con sus labios, mas en su corazón acumula engaño.

25 W hen his voice is gracious trust not in him, For seven abominations in his heart.

Cuando su voz sea agradable, no lo creas, pues hay siete abominaciones en su corazón.

26 H atred is covered by deceit, Revealed is its wickedness in an assembly.

Aunque su odio se cubra con engaño, su perversidad será descubierta en la asamblea.

27 W hoso is digging a pit falleth into it, And the roller of a stone, to him it turneth.

El que cava un hoyo caerá en él, y el que hace rodar una piedra, sobre él volverá.

28 A lying tongue hateth its bruised ones, And a flattering mouth worketh an overthrow!

La lengua mentirosa odia a los que oprime, y la boca lisonjera causa ruina.
