1 A nd Jethro priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heareth all that God hath done for Moses, and for Israel his people, that Jehovah hath brought out Israel from Egypt,

Y Jetro, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, oyó de todo lo que Dios había hecho por Moisés y por su pueblo Israel, cómo el Señor había sacado a Israel de Egipto.

2 a nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh Zipporah, wife of Moses, besides her parents,

Entonces Jetro, suegro de Moisés, tomó a Séfora, mujer de Moisés, después que éste la había enviado a su casa,

3 a nd her two sons, of whom the name of the one Gershom, for he said, `a sojourner I have been in a strange land:'

y a sus dos hijos, uno de los cuales se llamaba Gersón, pues Moisés había dicho: He sido peregrino en tierra extranjera,

4 a nd the name of the other Eliezer, for, `the God of my father for my help, and doth deliver me from the sword of Pharaoh.'

y el nombre del otro era Eliezer, pues había dicho: El Dios de mi padre fue mi ayuda y me libró de la espada de Faraón.

5 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, cometh, and his sons, and his wife, unto Moses, unto the wilderness where he is encamping -- the mount of God;

Y vino Jetro, suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de Moisés al desierto, donde éste estaba acampado junto al monte de Dios.

6 a nd he saith unto Moses, `I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'

Y mandó decir a Moisés: Yo, tu suegro Jetro, vengo a ti con tu mujer y sus dos hijos con ella.

7 A nd Moses goeth out to meet his father-in-law, and boweth himself, and kisseth him, and they ask one at another of welfare, and come into the tent;

Salió Moisés a recibir a su suegro, se inclinó y lo besó; y se preguntaron uno a otro cómo estaban, y entraron en la tienda.

8 a nd Moses recounteth to his father-in-law all that Jehovah hath done to Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians, on account of Israel, all the travail which hath found them in the way, and Jehovah doth deliver them.

Y Moisés contó a su suegro todo lo que el Señor había hecho a Faraón y a los egipcios por amor a Israel, todas las dificultades que les habían sobrevenido en el camino y cómo los había librado el Señor.

9 A nd Jethro rejoiceth for all the good which Jehovah hath done to Israel, whom He hath delivered from the hand of the Egyptians;

Y se alegró Jetro de todo el bien que el Señor había hecho a Israel, al librarlo de la mano de los egipcios.

10 a nd Jethro saith, `Blessed Jehovah, who hath delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of Pharaoh -- who hath delivered this people from under the hand of the Egyptians;

Entonces Jetro dijo: Bendito sea el Señor que os libró de la mano de los egipcios y de la mano de Faraón, y que libró al pueblo del poder de los egipcios.

11 n ow I have known that Jehovah greater than all the gods, for in the thing they have acted proudly -- above them!'

Ahora sé que el Señor es más grande que todos los dioses; ciertamente, esto se probó cuando trataron al pueblo con arrogancia.

12 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron cometh in, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses, before God.

Y Jetro, suegro de Moisés, tomó un holocausto y sacrificios para Dios, y Aarón vino con todos los ancianos de Israel a comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces

13 A nd it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Moses sitteth to judge the people, and the people stand before Moses, from the morning unto the evening;

Y aconteció que al día siguiente Moisés se sentó a juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta el atardecer.

14 a nd the father-in-law of Moses seeth all that he is doing to the people, and saith, `What this thing which thou art doing to the people? wherefore art thou sitting by thyself, and all the people standing by thee from morning till evening?'

Cuando el suegro de Moisés vio todo lo que él hacía por el pueblo, dijo: ¿Qué es esto que haces por el pueblo? ¿Por qué juzgas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta el atardecer?

15 A nd Moses saith to his father-in-law, `Because the people come unto me to seek God;

Y respondió Moisés a su suegro: Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

16 w hen they have a matter, it hath come unto me, and I have judged between a man and his neighbour, and made known the statutes of God, and His laws.'

Cuando tienen un pleito, vienen a mí, y yo juzgo entre uno y otro, dándo les a conocer los estatutos de Dios y sus leyes.

17 A nd the father-in-law of Moses saith unto him, `The thing which thou art doing not good;

Y el suegro de Moisés le dijo: No está bien lo que haces.

18 t hou dost surely wear away, both thou, and this people which with thee, for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to do it by thyself.

Con seguridad desfallecerás tú, y también este pueblo que está contigo, porque el trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti; no puedes hacerlo tú solo.

19 ` Now, hearken to my voice, I counsel thee, and God is with thee: be thou for the people over-against God, and thou hast brought in the things unto God;

Ahora, escúchame; yo te aconsejaré, y Dios estará contigo. Sé tú el representante del pueblo delante de Dios, y somete los asuntos a Dios.

20 a nd thou hast warned them the statutes and the laws, and hast made known to them the way in which they go, and the work which they do.

Y enséñales los estatutos y las leyes, y hazles saber el camino en que deben andar y la obra que han de realizar.

21 ` And thou -- thou dost provide out of all the people men of ability, fearing God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and hast placed over them, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

Además, escogerás de entre todo el pueblo hombres capaces, temerosos de Dios, hombres veraces que aborrezcan las ganancias deshonestas, y los pondrás sobre el pueblo como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez.

22 a nd they have judged the people at all times; and it hath come to pass, every great matter they bring in unto thee, and every small matter they judge themselves; and lighten it from off thyself, and they have borne with thee.

Y que juzguen ellos al pueblo en todo tiempo; y que traigan a ti todo pleito grave, pero que ellos juzguen todo pleito sencillo. Así será más fácil para ti, y ellos llevarán la carga contigo.

23 I f thou dost this thing, and God hath commanded thee, then thou hast been able to stand, and all this people also goeth in unto its place in peace.'

Si haces esto, y Dios te lo manda, tú podrás resistir y todo este pueblo por su parte irá en paz a su lugar.

24 A nd Moses hearkeneth to the voice of his father-in-law, and doth all that he said,

Moisés escuchó a su suegro, e hizo todo lo que él había dicho.

25 a nd Moses chooseth men of ability out of all Israel, and maketh them chiefs over the people, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

Y escogió Moisés hombres capaces de entre todo Israel, y los puso por cabezas del pueblo, como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez.

26 a nd they have judged the people at all times; the hard matter they bring in unto Moses, and every small matter they judge themselves.

Ellos juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo; el pleito difícil lo traían a Moisés, mas todo pleito sencillo lo juzgaban ellos.

27 A nd Moses sendeth his father-in-law away, and he goeth away unto his own land.

Y Moisés despidió a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.
