1 ` Men, brethren, and fathers, hear my defence now unto you;' --

Hermanos y padres, escuchad mi defensa que ahora presento ante vosotros.

2 a nd they having heard that in the Hebrew dialect he was speaking to them, gave the more silence, and he saith, --

Cuando oyeron que se dirigía a ellos en el idioma hebreo, observaron aún más silencio; y él dijo: Pablo da testimonio de su conversión

3 ` I, indeed, am a man, a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, and brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been taught according to the exactitude of a law of the fathers, being zealous of God, as all ye are to-day.

Yo soy judío, nacido en Tarso de Cilicia, pero criado en esta ciudad, educado bajo Gamaliel en estricta conformidad a la ley de nuestros padres, siendo tan celoso de Dios como todos vosotros lo sois hoy.

4 ` And this way I persecuted unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women,

Y perseguí este Camino hasta la muerte, encadenando y echando en cárceles tanto a hombres como a mujeres,

5 a s also the chief priest doth testify to me, and all the eldership; from whom also having received letters unto the brethren, to Damascus, I was going on, to bring also those there bound to Jerusalem that they might be punished,

de lo cual pueden testificar el sumo sacerdote y todo el concilio de los ancianos. También de ellos recibí cartas para los hermanos, y me puse en marcha para Damasco con el fin de traer presos a Jerusalén también a los que estaban allá, para que fueran castigados.

6 a nd it came to pass, in my going on and coming nigh to Damascus, about noon, suddenly out of the heaven there shone a great light round about me,

Y aconteció que cuando iba de camino, estando ya cerca de Damasco, como al mediodía, de repente una luz muy brillante fulguró desde el cielo a mi derredor,

7 I fell also to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why me dost thou persecute?

y caí al suelo, y oí una voz que me decía: “Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues?”

8 ` And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? and he said unto me, I am Jesus the Nazarene whom thou dost persecute --

Y respondí: “¿Quién eres, Señor?” Y El me dijo: “Yo soy Jesús el Nazareno, a quien tú persigues.”

9 a nd they who are with me the light did see, and became afraid, and the voice they heard not of him who is speaking to me --

Y los que estaban conmigo vieron la luz, ciertamente, pero no comprendieron la voz del que me hablaba.

10 a nd I said, What shall I do, Lord? and the Lord said unto me, Having risen, go on to Damascus, and there it shall be told thee concerning all things that have been appointed for thee to do.

Y yo dije: “¿Qué debo hacer, Señor?” Y el Señor me dijo: “Levántate y entra a Damasco; y allí se te dirá todo lo que se ha ordenado que hagas.”

11 ` And when I did not see from the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who are with me, I came to Damascus,

Pero como yo no veía por causa del resplandor de aquella luz, los que estaban conmigo me llevaron de la mano y entré a Damasco.

12 a nd a certain one, Ananias, a pious man according to the law, being testified to by all the Jews dwelling,

Y uno llamado Ananías, hombre piadoso según las normas de la ley, y de quien daban buen testimonio todos los judíos que vivían allí,

13 h aving come unto me and stood by, said to me, Saul, brother, look up; and I the same hour did look up to him;

vino a mí, y poniéndose a mi lado, me dijo: “Hermano Saulo, recibe la vista.” En ese mismo instante alcé los ojos y lo miré.

14 a nd he said, The God of our fathers did choose thee beforehand to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice out of his mouth,

Y él dijo: “El Dios de nuestros padres te ha designado para que conozcas su voluntad, y para que veas al Justo y oigas palabra de su boca.

15 b ecause thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard;

“Porque testigo suyo serás a todos los hombres de lo que has visto y oído.

16 a nd now, why tarriest thou? having risen, baptize thyself, and wash away thy sins, calling upon the name of the Lord.

“Y ahora, ¿por qué te detienes? Levántate y bautízate, y lava tus pecados invocando su nombre.”

17 ` And it came to pass when I returned to Jerusalem, and while I was praying in the temple, I came into a trance,

Y aconteció que cuando regresé a Jerusalén y me hallaba orando en el templo, caí en un éxtasis,

18 a nd I saw him saying to me, Haste and go forth in haste out of Jerusalem, because they will not receive thy testimony concerning me;

y vi al Señor que me decía: “Apresúrate y sal pronto de Jerusalén porque no aceptarán tu testimonio acerca de mí.”

19 a nd I said, Lord, they -- they know that I was imprisoning and was scourging in every synagogue those believing on thee;

Y yo dije: “Señor, ellos saben bien que en una sinagoga tras otra, yo encarcelaba y azotaba a los que creían en ti.

20 a nd when the blood of thy witness Stephen was being poured forth, I also was standing by and assenting to his death, and keeping the garments of those putting him to death;

“Y cuando se derramaba la sangre de tu testigo Esteban, allí estaba también yo dando mi aprobación, y cuidando los mantos de los que lo estaban matando.”

21 a nd he said unto me, Go, because to nations far off I will send thee.'

Pero El me dijo: “Ve, porque te voy a enviar lejos, a los gentiles.” Pablo bajo vigilancia del comandante

22 A nd they were hearing him unto this word, and they lifted up their voice, saying, `Away from the earth with such an one; for it is not fit for him to live.'

Lo oyeron hasta que dijo esto, y entonces alzaron sus voces y dijeron: ¡Quita de la tierra a ese individuo! No se le debe permitir que viva.

23 A nd they crying out and casting up their garments, and throwing dust into the air,

Como ellos vociferaban y arrojaban sus mantos y echaban polvo al aire,

24 t he chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, saying, `By scourges let him be examined;' that he might know for what cause they were crying so against him.

el comandante ordenó que lo llevaran al cuartel, diciendo que debía ser sometido a azotes para saber la razón por qué gritaban contra él de aquella manera.

25 A nd as he was stretching him with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion who was standing by, `A man, a Roman, uncondemned -- is it lawful to you to scourge;'

Cuando lo estiraron con correas, Pablo dijo al centurión que estaba allí: ¿Os es lícito azotar a un ciudadano romano sin haberle hecho juicio?

26 a nd the centurion having heard, having gone near to the chief captain, told, saying, `Take heed what thou art about to do, for this man is a Roman;'

Al oír esto el centurión, fue al comandante y le avisó, diciendo: ¿Qué vas a hacer? Porque este hombre es romano.

27 a nd the chief captain having come near, said to him, `Tell me, art thou a Roman?' and he said, `Yes;'

Vino el comandante a Pablo y le dijo: Dime, ¿eres romano? Y él dijo: Sí.

28 a nd the chief captain answered, `I, with a great sum, did obtain this citizenship;' but Paul said, `But I have been even born.'

Y el comandante respondió: Yo adquirí esta ciudadanía por una gran cantidad de dinero. Y Pablo dijo: Pero yo soy ciudadano de nacimiento.

29 I mmediately, therefore, they departed from him who are about to examine him, and the chief captain also was afraid, having learned that he is a Roman, and because he had bound him,

Entonces los que iban a someterlo a azotes, al instante lo soltaron; y también el comandante tuvo temor cuando supo que Pablo era romano, y porque lo había atado con cadenas. Pablo ante el concilio

30 a nd on the morrow, intending to know the certainty wherefore he is accused by the Jews, he did loose him from the bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their sanhedrim to come, and having brought down Paul, he set before them.

Al día siguiente, queriendo saber con certeza la causa por la cual los judíos lo acusaban, lo soltó, y ordenó a los principales sacerdotes y a todo el concilio que se reunieran; y llevando a Pablo, lo puso ante ellos.
