1 I said in my heart, `Pray, come, I try thee with mirth, and look thou on gladness;' and lo, even it vanity.

Entonces me dije: Ven ahora, te probaré con el placer; diviértete. Y he aquí, también esto era vanidad.

2 O f laughter I said, `Foolish!' and of mirth, `What this it is doing?'

Dije de la risa: Es locura; y del placer: ¿Qué logra esto?

3 I have sought in my heart to draw out with wine my appetite, (and my heart leading in wisdom), and to take hold on folly till that I see where this -- the good to the sons of man of that which they do under the heavens, the number of the days of their lives.

Consideré en mi mente cómo estimular mi cuerpo con el vino, mientras mi mente me guiaba con sabiduría, y cómo echar mano de la insensatez, hasta que pudiera ver qué hay de bueno bajo el cielo que los hijos de los hombres hacen en los contados días de su vida.

4 I made great my works, I builded for me houses, I planted for me vineyards.

Engrandecí mis obras, me edifiqué casas, me planté viñedos;

5 I made for me gardens and paradises, and I planted in them trees of every fruit.

me hice jardines y huertos, y planté en ellos toda clase de árboles frutales;

6 I made for me pools of water, to water from them a forest shooting forth trees.

me hice estanques de aguas para regar el bosque con árboles en pleno crecimiento.

7 I got men-servants, and maid-servants, and sons of the house were to me; also, I had much substance -- herd and flock -- above all who had been before me in Jerusalem.

Compré esclavos y esclavas, y tuve esclavos nacidos en casa. Tuve también ganados, vacas y ovejas, más que todos los que me precedieron en Jerusalén.

8 I gathered for me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces. I prepared for me men-singers and women-singers, and the luxuries of the sons of man -- a wife and wives.

Reuní también para mí plata y oro y el tesoro de los reyes y de las provincias. Me proveí de cantores y cantoras, y de los placeres de los hombres, de muchas concubinas.

9 A nd I became great, and increased above every one who had been before me in Jerusalem; also, my wisdom stood with me.

Y me engrandecí y superé a todos los que me precedieron en Jerusalén; también la sabiduría permaneció conmigo.

10 A nd all that mine eyes asked I kept not back from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced because of all my labour, and this hath been my portion, from all my labour,

Y de todo cuanto mis ojos deseaban, nada les negué, ni privé a mi corazón de ningún placer, porque mi corazón gozaba de todo mi trabajo, y ésta fue la recompensa de toda mi labor.

11 a nd I have looked on all my works that my hands have done, and on the labour that I have laboured to do, and lo, the whole vanity and vexation of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun!

Consideré luego todas las obras que mis manos habían hecho y el trabajo en que me había empeñado, y he aquí, todo era vanidad y correr tras el viento, y sin provecho bajo el sol.

12 A nd I turned to see wisdom, and madness, and folly, but what the man who cometh after the king? that which already -- they have done it!

Yo volví, pues, a considerar la sabiduría, la locura y la insensatez, porque ¿qué hará el hombre que venga después del rey sino lo que ya ha sido hecho ?

13 A nd I saw that there is an advantage to wisdom above folly, like the advantage of the light above the darkness.

Y yo vi que la sabiduría sobrepasa a la insensatez, como la luz a las tinieblas.

14 T he wise! -- his eyes in his head, and the fool in darkness is walking, and I also knew that one event happeneth with them all;

El sabio tiene ojos en su cabeza, mas el necio anda en tinieblas. Pero yo sé también que ambos corren la misma suerte.

15 a nd I said in my heart, `As it happeneth with the fool, it happeneth also with me, and why am I then more wise?' And I spake in my heart, that also this vanity:

Entonces me dije: Como la suerte del necio, así también será la mía. ¿Para qué, pues, me aprovecha haber sido tan sabio ? Y me dije: También esto es vanidad.

16 T hat there is no remembrance to the wise -- with the fool -- to the age, for that which already, the days that are coming is all forgotten, and how dieth the wise? with the fool!

Porque no hay memoria duradera ni del sabio ni del necio, ya que todos serán olvidados en los días venideros. ¡Cómo mueren tanto el sabio como el necio!

17 A nd I have hated life, for sad to me the work that hath been done under the sun, for the whole vanity and vexation of spirit.

Y aborrecí la vida, porque me era penosa la obra que se hace bajo el sol, pues todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento.

18 A nd I have hated all my labour that I labour at under the sun, because I leave it to a man who is after me.

Asimismo aborrecí todo el fruto de mi trabajo con que me había afanado bajo el sol, el cual tendré que dejar al hombre que vendrá después de mí.

19 A nd who knoweth whether he is wise or foolish? yet he doth rule over all my labour that I have laboured at, and that I have done wisely under the sun! this also vanity.

¿Y quién sabe si será sabio o necio? Sin embargo, él tendrá dominio sobre todo el fruto de mi trabajo con que me afané obrando sabiamente bajo el sol. También esto es vanidad.

20 A nd I turned round to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour that I laboured at under the sun.

Por tanto me desesperé en gran manera por todo el fruto de mi trabajo con que me había afanado bajo el sol.

21 F or there is a man whose labour in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity, and to a man who hath not laboured therein he giveth it -- his portion! Even this vanity and a great evil.

Cuando hay un hombre que ha trabajado con sabiduría, con conocimiento y con destreza, y da su hacienda al que no ha trabajado en ella, esto también es vanidad y un gran mal.

22 F or what hath been to a man by all his labour, and by the thought of his heart that he laboured at under the sun?

Pues, ¿qué recibe el hombre de todo su trabajo y del esfuerzo de su corazón con que se afana bajo el sol ?

23 F or all his days are sorrows, and his travail sadness; even at night his heart hath not lain down; this also vanity.

Porque durante todos sus días su tarea es dolorosa y penosa; ni aun de noche descansa su corazón. También esto es vanidad.

24 T here is nothing good in a man who eateth, and hath drunk, and hath shewn his soul good in his labour. This also I have seen that it from the hand of God.

Nada hay mejor para el hombre que comer y beber y decirse que su trabajo es bueno. Esto también yo he visto que es de la mano de Dios.

25 F or who eateth and who hasteth out more than I?

Porque ¿quién comerá y quién se alegrará sin El ?

26 F or to a man who good before Him, He hath given wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; and to a sinner He hath given travail, to gather and to heap up, to give to the good before God. Even this vanity and vexation of spirit.

Porque a la persona que le agrada, El le ha dado sabiduría, conocimiento y gozo; mas al pecador le ha dado la tarea de recoger y amontonar para dárselo al que agrada a Dios. Esto también es vanidad y correr tras el viento.
