1 A nd Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

Entonces respondió Elifaz temanita, y dijo:

2 T o God is a man profitable, Because a wise man to himself is profitable?

¿Puede un hombre ser útil a Dios, o un sabio útil para sí mismo?

3 I s it a delight to the Mighty One That thou art righteous? is it gain, That thou makest perfect thy ways?

¿Es de algún beneficio al Todopoderoso que tú seas justo, o gana algo si haces perfectos tus caminos?

4 B ecause of thy reverence Doth He reason thee? He entereth with thee into judgment:

¿Es a causa de tu piedad que El te reprende, que entra en juicio contigo ?

5 I s not thy wickedness abundant? And there is no end to thine iniquities.

¿No es grande tu maldad, y sin fin tus iniquidades ?

6 F or thou takest a pledge of thy brother for nought, And the garments of the naked Thou dost strip off.

Porque sin razón tomabas prendas de tus hermanos, y has despojado de sus ropas a los desnudos.

7 T hou causest not the weary to drink water, And from the hungry thou withholdest bread.

No dabas de beber agua al cansado, y le negabas pan al hambriento.

8 A s to the man of arm -- he hath the earth, And the accepted of face -- he dwelleth in it.

Mas la tierra es del poderoso, y el privilegiado mora en ella.

9 W idows thou hast sent away empty, And the arms of the fatherless are bruised.

Despedías a las viudas con las manos vacías y quebrabas los brazos de los huérfanos.

10 T herefore round about thee snares, And trouble thee doth fear suddenly.

Por eso te rodean lazos, y te aterra temor repentino,

11 O r darkness -- thou dost not see, And abundance of waters doth cover thee.

o tinieblas, y no puedes ver, y abundancia de agua te cubre.

12 I s not God high heaven? And see the summit of the stars, That they are high.

¿No está Dios en lo alto de los cielos ? Mira también las más lejanas estrellas, ¡cuán altas están!

13 A nd thou hast said, `What -- hath God known? Through thickness doth He judge?

Y tú dices: “¿Qué sabe Dios ? ¿Puede El juzgar a través de las densas tinieblas?

14 T hick clouds a secret place to Him, And He doth not see;' And the circle of the heavens He walketh habitually,

“Las nubes le ocultan, y no puede ver, y se pasea por la bóveda del cielo.”

15 T he path of the age dost thou observe, That men of iniquity have trodden?

¿Seguirás en la senda antigua en que anduvieron los hombres malvados,

16 W ho have been cut down unexpectedly, A flood is poured out on their foundation.

que fueron arrebatados antes de su tiempo, y cuyos cimientos fueron arrasados por un río ?

17 T hose saying to God, `Turn aside from us,' And what doth the Mighty One to them?

Ellos dijeron a Dios: “Apártate de nosotros” y: “¿Qué puede hacernos el Todopoderoso ?”

18 A nd he hath filled their houses good: (And the counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

El había colmado de bienes sus casas, pero el consejo de los malos está lejos de mí.

19 S ee do the righteous and they rejoice, And the innocent mocketh at them,

Los justos ven y se alegran, y el inocente se burla de ellos,

20 ` Surely our substance hath not been cut off, And their excellency hath fire consumed.'

diciendo: “Ciertamente nuestros adversarios son destruidos, y el fuego ha consumido su abundancia.”

21 A cquaint thyself, I pray thee, with Him, And be at peace, Thereby thine increase good.

Cede ahora y haz la paz con El, así te vendrá el bien.

22 R eceive, I pray thee, from His mouth a law, And set His sayings in thy heart.

Recibe, te ruego, la instrucción de su boca, y pon sus palabras en tu corazón.

23 I f thou dost return unto the Mighty Thou art built up, Thou puttest iniquity far from thy tents.

Si vuelves al Todopoderoso, serás restaurado. Si alejas de tu tienda la injusticia,

24 S o as to set on the dust a defence, And on a rock of the valleys a covering.

y pones tu oro en el polvo, y el oro de Ofir entre las piedras de los arroyos,

25 A nd the Mighty hath been thy defence, And silver strength to thee.

el Todopoderoso será para ti tu oro y tu plata escogida.

26 F or then on the Mighty thou delightest thyself, And dost lift up unto God thy face,

Porque entonces te deleitarás en el Todopoderoso, y alzarás a Dios tu rostro.

27 T hou dost make supplication unto Him, And He doth hear thee, And thy vows thou completest.

Orarás a El y te escuchará, y cumplirás tus votos.

28 A nd thou decreest a saying, And it is established to thee, And on thy ways hath light shone.

Decidirás una cosa, y se te cumplirá, y en tus caminos resplandecerá la luz.

29 F or they have made low, And thou sayest, `Lift up.' And the bowed down of eyes he saveth.

Cuando estés abatido, hablarás con confianza y El salvará al humilde.

30 H e delivereth the not innocent, Yea, he hath been delivered By the cleanness of thy hands.

El librará aun al que no es inocente, que será librado por la pureza de tus manos.
