1 A nd Jethro priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heareth all that God hath done for Moses, and for Israel his people, that Jehovah hath brought out Israel from Egypt,

Jetro, sacerdote de Midiã e sogro de Moisés, soube de tudo o que Deus tinha feito por Moisés e pelo povo de Israel, como o Senhor havia tirado Israel do Egito.

2 a nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh Zipporah, wife of Moses, besides her parents,

Moisés tinha mandado Zípora, sua mulher, para a casa de seu sogro Jetro, que a recebeu

3 a nd her two sons, of whom the name of the one Gershom, for he said, `a sojourner I have been in a strange land:'

com os seus dois filhos. Um deles chamava-se Gérson, pois Moisés dissera: “Tornei-me imigrante em terra estrangeira”;

4 a nd the name of the other Eliezer, for, `the God of my father for my help, and doth deliver me from the sword of Pharaoh.'

e o outro chamava-se Eliézer, pois dissera: “O Deus de meu pai foi o meu ajudador; livrou-me da espada do faraó”.

5 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, cometh, and his sons, and his wife, unto Moses, unto the wilderness where he is encamping -- the mount of God;

Jetro, sogro de Moisés, veio com os filhos e a mulher de Moisés encontrá-lo no deserto, onde estava acampado, perto do monte de Deus.

6 a nd he saith unto Moses, `I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'

E Jetro mandou dizer-lhe: “Eu, seu sogro Jetro, estou indo encontrá-lo, e comigo vão sua mulher e seus dois filhos”.

7 A nd Moses goeth out to meet his father-in-law, and boweth himself, and kisseth him, and they ask one at another of welfare, and come into the tent;

Então Moisés saiu ao encontro do sogro, curvou-se e beijou-o; trocaram saudações e depois entraram na tenda.

8 a nd Moses recounteth to his father-in-law all that Jehovah hath done to Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians, on account of Israel, all the travail which hath found them in the way, and Jehovah doth deliver them.

Então Moisés contou ao sogro tudo quanto o Senhor tinha feito ao faraó e aos egípcios por amor a Israel e também todas as dificuldades que tinham enfrentado pelo caminho e como o Senhor os livrara.

9 A nd Jethro rejoiceth for all the good which Jehovah hath done to Israel, whom He hath delivered from the hand of the Egyptians;

Jetro alegrou-se ao ouvir todas as coisas boas que o Senhor tinha feito a Israel, libertando-o das mãos dos egípcios.

10 a nd Jethro saith, `Blessed Jehovah, who hath delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of Pharaoh -- who hath delivered this people from under the hand of the Egyptians;

Disse ele: “Bendito seja o Senhor que libertou vocês das mãos dos egípcios e do faraó; que livrou o povo das mãos dos egípcios!

11 n ow I have known that Jehovah greater than all the gods, for in the thing they have acted proudly -- above them!'

Agora sei que o Senhor é maior do que todos os outros deuses, pois ele os superou exatamente naquilo de que se vangloriavam”.

12 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron cometh in, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses, before God.

Então Jetro, sogro de Moisés, ofereceu um holocausto e sacrifícios a Deus, e Arão veio com todas as autoridades de Israel para comerem com o sogro de Moisés na presença de Deus. O Conselho de Jetro

13 A nd it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Moses sitteth to judge the people, and the people stand before Moses, from the morning unto the evening;

No dia seguinte Moisés assentou-se para julgar as questões do povo, e este permaneceu em pé diante dele, desde a manhã até o cair da tarde.

14 a nd the father-in-law of Moses seeth all that he is doing to the people, and saith, `What this thing which thou art doing to the people? wherefore art thou sitting by thyself, and all the people standing by thee from morning till evening?'

Quando o seu sogro viu tudo o que ele estava fazendo pelo povo, disse: “Que é que você está fazendo? Por que só você se assenta para julgar, e todo este povo o espera em pé, desde a manhã até o cair da tarde?”

15 A nd Moses saith to his father-in-law, `Because the people come unto me to seek God;

Moisés lhe respondeu: “O povo me procura para que eu consulte a Deus.

16 w hen they have a matter, it hath come unto me, and I have judged between a man and his neighbour, and made known the statutes of God, and His laws.'

Toda vez que alguém tem uma questão, esta me é trazida, e eu decido entre as partes, e ensino-lhes os decretos e leis de Deus”.

17 A nd the father-in-law of Moses saith unto him, `The thing which thou art doing not good;

Respondeu o sogro de Moisés: “O que você está fazendo não é bom.

18 t hou dost surely wear away, both thou, and this people which with thee, for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to do it by thyself.

Você e o seu povo ficarão esgotados, pois essa tarefa lhe é pesada demais. Você não pode executá-la sozinho.

19 ` Now, hearken to my voice, I counsel thee, and God is with thee: be thou for the people over-against God, and thou hast brought in the things unto God;

Agora, ouça-me! Eu lhe darei um conselho, e que Deus esteja com você! Seja você o representante do povo diante de Deus e leve a Deus as suas questões.

20 a nd thou hast warned them the statutes and the laws, and hast made known to them the way in which they go, and the work which they do.

Oriente-os quanto aos decretos e leis, mostrando-lhes como devem viver e o que devem fazer.

21 ` And thou -- thou dost provide out of all the people men of ability, fearing God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and hast placed over them, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

Mas escolha dentre todo o povo homens capazes, tementes a Deus, dignos de confiança e inimigos de ganho desonesto. Estabeleça-os como chefes de mil, de cem, de cinqüenta e de dez.

22 a nd they have judged the people at all times; and it hath come to pass, every great matter they bring in unto thee, and every small matter they judge themselves; and lighten it from off thyself, and they have borne with thee.

Eles estarão sempre à disposição do povo para julgar as questões. Trarão a você apenas as questões difíceis; as mais simples decidirão sozinhos. Isso tornará mais leve o seu fardo, porque eles o dividirão com você.

23 I f thou dost this thing, and God hath commanded thee, then thou hast been able to stand, and all this people also goeth in unto its place in peace.'

Se você assim fizer, e se assim Deus ordenar, você será capaz de suportar as dificuldades, e todo este povo voltará para casa satisfeito”.

24 A nd Moses hearkeneth to the voice of his father-in-law, and doth all that he said,

Moisés aceitou o conselho do sogro e fez tudo como ele tinha sugerido.

25 a nd Moses chooseth men of ability out of all Israel, and maketh them chiefs over the people, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

Escolheu homens capazes de todo o Israel e colocou-os como líderes do povo: chefes de mil, de cem, de cinqüenta e de dez.

26 a nd they have judged the people at all times; the hard matter they bring in unto Moses, and every small matter they judge themselves.

Estes ficaram como juízes permanentes do povo. As questões difíceis levavam a Moisés; as mais simples, porém, eles mesmos resolviam.

27 A nd Moses sendeth his father-in-law away, and he goeth away unto his own land.

Então Moisés e seu sogro se despediram, e este voltou para a sua terra.
