1 A nd it cometh to pass, in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, reigned hath Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah;

No terceiro ano do reinado de Oséias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Ezequias, filho de Acaz, rei de Judá, começou a reinar.

2 a son of twenty and five years was he in his reigning, and twenty and nine years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother Abi daughter of Zechariah.

Ele tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar, e reinou vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe era Abia, filha de Zacarias.

3 A nd he doth that which right in the eyes of Jehovah, according to all that David his father did,

Ele fez o que o Senhor aprova, tal como tinha feito Davi, seu predecessor.

4 h e hath turned aside the high places, and broken in pieces the standing-pillars, and cut down the shrine, and beaten down the brazen serpent that Moses made, for unto these days were the sons of Israel making perfume to it, and he calleth it `a piece of brass.'

Removeu os altares idólatras, quebrou as colunas sagradas e derrubou os postes sagrados. Despedaçou a serpente de bronze que Moisés havia feito, pois até aquela época os israelitas lhe queimavam incenso. Era chamada Neustã.

5 I n Jehovah, God of Israel, he hath trusted, and after him there hath not been like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him;

Ezequias confiava no Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Nunca houve ninguém como ele entre todos os reis de Judá, nem antes nem depois dele.

6 a nd he cleaveth to Jehovah, he hath not turned aside from after Him, and keepeth His commands that Jehovah commanded Moses.

Ele se apegou ao Senhor e não deixou de segui-lo; obedeceu aos mandamentos que o Senhor tinha dado a Moisés.

7 A nd Jehovah hath been with him, in every place where he goeth out he acteth wisely, and he rebelleth against the king of Asshur, and hath not served him;

E o Senhor estava com ele; era bem-sucedido em tudo o que fazia. Rebelou-se contra o rei da Assíria e deixou de submeter-se a ele.

8 h e hath smitten the Philistines unto Gaza, and its borders, from a tower of watchers unto the fenced city.

Desde as torres das sentinelas até a cidade fortificada, ele derrotou os filisteus, até Gaza e o seu território.

9 A nd it cometh to pass, in the fourth year of king Hezekiah -- it the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel -- come up hath Shalmaneser king of Asshur against Samaria, and layeth siege to it,

No quarto ano do reinado do rei Ezequias, o sétimo ano do reinado de Oséias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Salmaneser, rei da Assíria, marchou contra Samaria e a cercou.

10 a nd they capture it at the end of three years; in the sixth year of Hezekiah -- it the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel -- hath Samaria been captureth,

Ao fim de três anos, os assírios a tomaram. Assim a cidade foi conquistada no sexto ano do reinado de Ezequias, o nono ano do reinado de Oséias, rei de Israel.

11 a nd the king of Asshur removeth Israel to Asshur, and placed them in Halah, and in Habor the river Gozan, and cities of the Medes,

O rei assírio deportou os israelitas para a Assíria e os estabeleceu em Hala, em Gozã do rio Habor e nas cidades dos medos.

12 b ecause that they have not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah their God, and transgress His covenant -- all that He commanded Moses, servant of Jehovah -- yea, they have not hearkened nor done.

Isso aconteceu porque os israelitas não obedeceram ao Senhor, o seu Deus, mas violaram a sua aliança: tudo o que Moisés, o servo do Senhor, tinha ordenado. Não o ouviram nem lhe obedeceram.

13 A nd in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah hath Sennacherib king of Asshur come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them,

No décimo quarto ano do reinado do rei Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e as conquistou.

14 a nd Hezekiah king of Judah sendeth unto the king of Asshur to Lachish, saying, `I have sinned, turn back from off me; that which thou puttest on me I bear;' and the king of Asshur layeth on Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver, and thirty talents of gold,

Então Ezequias, rei de Judá, enviou esta mensagem ao rei da Assíria, em Láquis: “Cometi um erro. Pára de atacar-me, e eu pagarei tudo o que exigires”. O rei da Assíria cobrou de Ezequias, rei de Judá, dez toneladas e meia de prata e um mil e cinqüenta quilos de ouro.

15 a nd Hezekiah giveth all the silver that is found in the house of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the house of the king;

Assim, Ezequias lhes deu toda a prata que se encontrou no templo e na tesouraria do palácio real.

16 a t that time hath Hezekiah cut off the doors of the temple of Jehovah, and the pillars that Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and giveth them to the king of Asshur.

Nessa ocasião Ezequias, rei de Judá, retirou o ouro com que havia coberto as portas e os batentes do templo do Senhor, e o deu ao rei da Assíria. A Ameaça de Senaqueribe a Jerusalém

17 A nd the king of Asshur sendeth Tartan, and the chief of the eunuchs, and the chief of the butlers, from Lachish, unto king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, to Jerusalem, and they go up and come in to Jerusalem, and they go up, and come in and stand by the conduit of the upper pool that in the highway of the fuller's field.

De Láquis o rei da Assíria enviou ao rei Ezequias, em Jerusalém, seu general, seu oficial principal e seu comandante de campo com um grande exército. Eles subiram a Jerusalém e pararam no aqueduto do açude superior, na estrada que leva ao campo do Lavandeiro.

18 A nd they call unto the king, and go out unto them doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the remembrancer.

Eles chamaram pelo rei; e o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o secretário Sebna e o arquivista real Joá, filho de Asafe, foram ao seu encontro.

19 A nd the chief of the butlers saith unto them, `Say, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What this confidence in which thou hast confided?

O comandante de campo lhes disse: “Digam isto a Ezequias: “Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: ‘Em que você baseia sua confiança?

20 T hou hast said: Only a word of the lips! counsel and might for battle; now, on whom hast thou trusted that thou hast rebelled against me?

Você pensa que meras palavras já são estratégia e poderio militar. Em quem você está confiando para se rebelar contra mim?

21 ` Now, lo, thou hast trusted for thee on the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it! -- so Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.

Você está confiando no Egito, aquele caniço quebrado que espeta e perfura a mão do homem que nele se apóia! Assim o faraó, rei do Egito, retribui a quem confia nele.

22 ` And when ye say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted, is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar do ye bow yourselves in Jerusalem?

Mas, se vocês me disserem: “Estamos confiando no Senhor, o nosso Deus”; não é ele aquele cujos santuários e altares Ezequias removeu, dizendo a Judá e Jerusalém: “Vocês devem adorar diante deste altar em Jerusalém”?’

23 ` And, now, give a pledge for thee, I pray thee, to my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to give for thee riders on them.

“Aceite, pois, agora, o desafio do meu senhor, o rei da Assíria: ‘Eu lhe darei dois mil cavalos, se você tiver cavaleiros para eles!’

24 A nd how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, that thou dost trust for thee on Egypt for chariot, and for horsemen?

Como você pode derrotar o mais insignificante guerreiro do meu senhor? Você confia no Egito para lhe dar carros de guerra e cavaleiros?

25 N ow, without Jehovah have I come up against this place to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up against this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'

Além disso, será que vim atacar e destruir este local sem uma palavra da parte do Senhor ? O próprio Senhor me disse que marchasse contra este país e o destruísse”.

26 A nd Eliakim son of Hilkiah saith -- and Shebna, and Joah -- to the chief of the butlers, `Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants Aramaean, for we are understanding, and do not speak with us Jewish, in the ears of the people who on the wall.'

Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, Sebna e Joá disseram ao comandante de campo: “Por favor, fala com teus servos em aramaico, porque entendemos essa língua. Não fales em hebraico, pois assim o povo que está sobre os muros o entenderá”.

27 A nd the chief of the butlers saith unto them, `For thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men, those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water, with you?'

O comandante, porém, respondeu: “Será que meu senhor enviou-me para dizer essas coisas somente para o seu senhor e para você, e não para os que estão sentados no muro, que, como vocês, terão que comer as próprias fezes e beber a própria urina?”

28 A nd the chief of the butlers standeth and calleth with a great voice Jewish, and speaketh and saith, `Hear ye a word of the great king, the king of Asshur:

Então o comandante levantou-se e gritou em hebraico: “Ouçam a palavra do grande rei, o rei da Assíria!

29 t hus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you out of his hand;

Assim diz o rei: ‘Não deixem que Ezequias os engane. Ele não poderá livrá-los de minha mão.

30 a nd let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, and this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

Não deixem Ezequias convencê-los a confiar no Senhor, quando diz: “Com certeza o Senhor nos livrará; esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria”’.

31 ` Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,

“Não dêem ouvidos a Ezequias. Assim diz o rei da Assíria: ‘Façam paz comigo e rendam-se. Então cada um de vocês comerá de sua própria videira e de sua própria figueira e beberá água de sua própria cisterna,

32 t ill my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive, and honey, and live, and die not; and do not hearken unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us.

até que eu venha e os leve para uma terra igual à de vocês, terra de cereais, de vinho, terra de pão e de vinhas, terra de oliveiras e de mel. Escolham a vida e não a morte! Não dêem ouvidos a Ezequias, pois ele os está iludindo, quando diz: “O Senhor nos livrará”’.

33 ` Have the gods of the nations delivered at all each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?

“Será que o deus de alguma nação conseguiu livrar sua terra das mãos do rei da Assíria?

34 W here the gods of Hamath and Arpad? where the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim, de Hena e de Iva? Acaso livraram Samaria das minhas mãos?

35 W ho among all the gods of the lands that have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'

Qual dentre todos os deuses dessas nações conseguiu livrar sua terra do meu poder? Como então o Senhor poderá livrar Jerusalém das minhas mãos?”

36 A nd the people have kept silent, and have not answered him a word, for the command of the king is, saying, `Do not answer him.'

Mas o povo permaneceu calado e nada disse em resposta, pois o rei tinha ordenado: “Não lhe respondam”.

37 A nd Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah, with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of the chief of the butlers.

Então o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o secretário Sebna e o arquivista real Joá, filho de Asafe, retornaram com as vestes rasgadas a Ezequias e lhe relataram o que o comandante de campo tinha dito.
