1 A nd it cometh to pass, when Samuel aged, that he maketh his sons judges over Israel.

Quando envelheceu, Samuel nomeou seus filhos como líderes de Israel.

2 A nd the name of his first-born son is Joel, and the name of his second Abiah, judges in Beer-Sheba:

Seu filho mais velho chamava-se Joel e o segundo, Abias. Eles eram líderes em Berseba.

3 a nd his sons have not walked in his ways, and turn aside after the dishonest gain, and take a bribe, and turn aside judgment.

Mas os filhos dele não andaram em seus caminhos. Eles se tornaram gananciosos, aceitavam suborno e pervertiam a justiça.

4 A nd all the elders of Israel gather themselves together, and come in unto Samuel to Ramath,

Por isso todas as autoridades de Israel reuniram-se e foram falar com Samuel, em Ramá.

5 a nd say unto him, `Lo, thou hast become aged, and thy sons have not walked in thy ways; now, appoint to us a king, to judge us, like all the nations.'

E disseram-lhe: “Tu já estás idoso, e teus filhos não andam em teus caminhos; escolhe agora um rei para que nos lidere, à semelhança das outras nações”.

6 A nd the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they have said, `Give to us a king to judge us;' and Samuel prayeth unto Jehovah.

Quando, porém, disseram: “Dá-nos um rei para que nos lidere”, isso desagradou a Samuel; então ele orou ao Senhor.

7 A nd Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Hearken to the voice of the people, to all that they say unto thee, for thee they have not rejected, but Me they have rejected, from reigning over them.

E o Senhor lhe respondeu: “Atenda a tudo o que o povo está lhe pedindo; não foi a você que rejeitaram; foi a mim que rejeitaram como rei.

8 A ccording to all the works that they have done from the day of My bringing them up out of Egypt, even unto this day, when they forsake Me, and serve other gods -- so they are doing also to thee.

Assim como fizeram comigo desde o dia em que os tirei do Egito, até hoje, abandonando-me e prestando culto a outros deuses, também estão fazendo com você.

9 A nd now, hearken to their voice; only, surely thou dost certainly protest to them, and hast declared to them the custom of the king who doth reign over them.'

Agora atenda-os; mas advirta-os solenemente e diga-lhes quais direitos reivindicará o rei que os governará”.

10 A nd Samuel speaketh all the words of Jehovah unto the people who are asking from him a king,

Samuel transmitiu todas as palavras do Senhor ao povo, que estava lhe pedindo um rei,

11 a nd saith, `This is the custom of the king who doth reign over you: Your sons he doth take, and hath appointed for himself among his chariots, and among his horsemen, and they have run before his chariots;

dizendo: “O rei que reinará sobre vocês reivindicará como seu direito o seguinte: ele tomará os filhos de vocês para servi-lo em seus carros de guerra e em sua cavalaria, e para correr à frente dos seus carros de guerra.

12 a lso to appoint for himself heads of thousands, and heads of fifties; also to plow his plowing, and to reap his reaping; and to make instruments of his war, and instruments of his charioteer.

Colocará alguns como comandantes de mil e outros como comandantes de cinqüenta. Ele os fará arar as terras dele, fazer a colheita, e fabricar armas de guerra e equipamentos para os seus carros de guerra.

13 ` And your daughters he doth take for perfumers, and for cooks, and for bakers;

Tomará as filhas de vocês para serem perfumistas, cozinheiras e padeiras.

14 a nd your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-yards -- the best -- he doth take, and hath given to his servants.

Tomará de vocês o melhor das plantações, das vinhas e dos olivais, e o dará aos criados dele.

15 A nd your seed and your vineyards he doth tithe, and hath given to his eunuchs, and to his servants.

Tomará um décimo dos cereais e da colheita das uvas e o dará a seus oficiais e a seus criados.

16 A nd your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your young men -- the best, and your asses, he doth take, and hath prepared for his own work;

Também tomará de vocês para seu uso particular os servos e as servas, e o melhor do gado e dos jumentos.

17 y our flock he doth tithe, and ye are to him for servants.

E tomará de vocês um décimo dos rebanhos, e vocês mesmos se tornarão escravos dele.

18 A nd ye have cried out in that day because of the king whom ye have chosen for yourselves, and Jehovah doth not answer you in that day.'

Naquele dia, vocês clamarão por causa do rei que vocês mesmos escolheram, e o Senhor não os ouvirá”.

19 A nd the people refuse to hearken to the voice of Samuel, and say, `Nay, but a king is over us,

Todavia, o povo recusou-se a ouvir Samuel, e disse: “Não! Queremos ter um rei.

20 a nd we have been, even we, like all the nations; and our king hath judged us, and gone out before us, and fought our battles.'

Seremos como todas as outras nações; um rei nos governará, e sairá à nossa frente para combater em nossas batalhas”.

21 A nd Samuel heareth all the words of the people, and speaketh them in the ears of Jehovah;

Depois de ter ouvido tudo o que o povo disse, Samuel o repetiu perante o Senhor.

22 a nd Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Hearken to their voice, and thou hast caused to reign over them a king.' And Samuel saith unto the men of Israel, `Go ye each to his city.'

E o Senhor respondeu: “Atenda-os e dê-lhes um rei”. Então Samuel disse aos homens de Israel: “Volte cada um para a sua cidade”.
