1 T ruth I say in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing testimony with me in the Holy Spirit,

Digo a verdade em Cristo, não minto; minha consciência o confirma no Espírito Santo:

2 t hat I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart --

tenho grande tristeza e constante angústia em meu coração.

3 f or I was wishing, I myself, to be anathema from the Christ -- for my brethren, my kindred, according to the flesh,

Pois eu até desejaria ser amaldiçoado e separado de Cristo por amor de meus irmãos, os de minha raça,

4 w ho are Israelites, whose the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the lawgiving, and the service, and the promises,

o povo de Israel. Deles é a adoção de filhos; deles é a glória divina, as alianças, a concessão da Lei, a adoração no templo e as promessas.

5 w hose the fathers, and of whom the Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed to the ages. Amen.

Deles são os patriarcas, e a partir deles se traça a linhagem humana de Cristo, que é Deus acima de todos, bendito para sempre! Amém.

6 A nd it is not possible that the word of God hath failed; for not all who of Israel are these Israel;

Não pensemos que a palavra de Deus falhou. Pois nem todos os descendentes de Israel são Israel.

7 n or because they are seed of Abraham all children, but -- `in Isaac shall a seed be called to thee;'

Nem por serem descendentes de Abraão passaram todos a ser filhos de Abraão. Ao contrário: “Por meio de Isaque a sua descendência será considerada”.

8 t hat is, the children of the flesh -- these not children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for seed;

Noutras palavras, não são os filhos naturais que são filhos de Deus, mas os filhos da promessa é que são considerados descendência de Abraão.

9 f or the word of promise this; `According to this time I will come, and there shall be to Sarah a son.'

Pois foi assim que a promessa foi feita: “No tempo devido virei novamente, e Sara terá um filho”.

10 A nd not only, but also Rebecca, having conceived by one -- Isaac our father --

E esse não foi o único caso; também os filhos de Rebeca tiveram um mesmo pai, nosso pai Isaque.

11 ( for they being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to choice, might remain; not of works, but of Him who is calling,) it was said to her --

Todavia, antes que os gêmeos nascessem ou fizessem qualquer coisa boa ou má — a fim de que o propósito de Deus conforme a eleição permanecesse,

12 ` The greater shall serve the less;'

não por obras, mas por aquele que chama — foi dito a ela: “O mais velho servirá ao mais novo”.

13 a ccording as it hath been written, `Jacob I did love, and Esau I did hate.'

Como está escrito: “Amei Jacó, mas rejeitei Esaú”.

14 W hat, then, shall we say? unrighteousness with God? let it not be!

E então, que diremos? Acaso Deus é injusto? De maneira nenhuma!

15 f or to Moses He saith, `I will do kindness to whom I do kindness, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion;'

Pois ele diz a Moisés: “Terei misericórdia de quem eu quiser ter misericórdia e terei compaixão de quem eu quiser ter compaixão”.

16 s o, then -- not of him who is willing, nor of him who is running, but of God who is doing kindness:

Portanto, isso não depende do desejo ou do esforço humano, mas da misericórdia de Deus.

17 f or the Writing saith to Pharaoh -- `For this very thing I did raise thee up, that I might shew in thee My power, and that My name might be declared in all the land;'

Pois a Escritura diz ao faraó: “Eu o levantei exatamente com este propósito: mostrar em você o meu poder, e para que o meu nome seja proclamado em toda a terra”.

18 s o, then, to whom He willeth, He doth kindness, and to whom He willeth, He doth harden.

Portanto, Deus tem misericórdia de quem ele quer, e endurece a quem ele quer.

19 T hou wilt say, then, to me, `Why yet doth He find fault? for His counsel who hath resisted?'

Mas algum de vocês me dirá: “Então, por que Deus ainda nos culpa? Pois, quem resiste à sua vontade?”

20 n ay, but, O man, who art thou that art answering again to God? shall the thing formed say to Him who did form, Why me didst thou make thus?

Mas quem é você, ó homem, para questionar a Deus? “Acaso aquilo que é formado pode dizer ao que o formou: ‘Por que me fizeste assim?’ ”

21 h ath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour?

O oleiro não tem direito de fazer do mesmo barro um vaso para fins nobres e outro para uso desonroso?

22 A nd if God, willing to shew the wrath and to make known His power, did endure, in much long suffering, vessels of wrath fitted for destruction,

E se Deus, querendo mostrar a sua ira e tornar conhecido o seu poder, suportou com grande paciência os vasos de sua ira, preparados para a destruição?

23 a nd that He might make known the riches of His glory on vessels of kindness, that He before prepared for glory, whom also He did call -- us --

Que dizer, se ele fez isto para tornar conhecidas as riquezas de sua glória aos vasos de sua misericórdia, que preparou de antemão para glória,

24 n ot only out of Jews, but also out of nations,

ou seja, a nós, a quem também chamou, não apenas dentre os judeus, mas também dentre os gentios?

25 a s also in Hosea He saith, `I will call what not My people -- My people; and her not beloved -- Beloved,

Como ele diz em Oséias: “Chamarei ‘meu povo’ a quem não é meu povo; e chamarei ‘minha amada’ a quem não é minha amada”,

26 a nd it shall be -- in the place where it was said to them, Ye not My people; there they shall be called sons of the living God.'

e: “Acontecerá que, no mesmo lugar em que se lhes declarou: ‘Vocês não são meu povo’, eles serão chamados ‘filhos do Deus vivo’”.

27 A nd Isaiah doth cry concerning Israel, `If the number of the sons of Israel may be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved;

Isaías exclama com relação a Israel: “Embora o número dos israelitas seja como a areia do mar, apenas o remanescente será salvo.

28 f or a matter He is finishing, and is cutting short in righteousness, because a matter cut short will the Lord do upon the land.

Pois o Senhor executará na terra a sua sentença, rápida e definitivamente”.

29 a nd according as Isaiah saith before, `Except the Lord of Sabaoth did leave to us a seed, as Sodom we had become, and as Gomorrah we had been made like.'

Como anteriormente disse Isaías: “Se o Senhor dos Exércitos não nos tivesse deixado descendentes, já estaríamos como Sodoma, e semelhantes a Gomorra”. A Incredulidade de Israel

30 W hat, then, shall we say? that nations who are not pursuing righteousness did attain to righteousness, and righteousness that of faith,

Que diremos, então? Os gentios, que não buscavam justiça, a obtiveram, uma justiça que vem da fé;

31 a nd Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, at a law of righteousness did not arrive;

mas Israel, que buscava uma lei que trouxesse justiça, não a alcançou.

32 w herefore? because -- not by faith, but as by works of law; for they did stumble at the stone of stumbling,

Por que não? Porque não a buscava pela fé, mas como se fosse por obras. Eles tropeçaram na “pedra de tropeço”.

33 a ccording as it hath been written, `Lo, I place in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence; and every one who is believing thereon shall not be ashamed.'

Como está escrito: “Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra de tropeço e uma rocha que faz cair; e aquele que nela confia jamais será envergonhado”.
