1 A nd Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it,

O rei Ben-Hadade, da Síria, convocou todo o seu exército e, acompanhado de trinta e dois reis com seus cavalos e carros de guerra, cercou e atacou Samaria.

2 a nd sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city,

Ele enviou mensageiros à cidade, a Acabe, o rei de Israel, que lhe disseram: “Isto é o que diz Ben-Hadade:

3 a nd saith to him, `Thus said Ben-Hadad, `Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons -- the best -- are mine.'

‘A sua prata e o seu ouro são meus, e o melhor de suas mulheres e filhos também’”.

4 A nd the king of Israel answereth and saith, `According to thy word, my lord, O king: I thine, and all that I have.'

O rei respondeu: “Que seja conforme tu dizes, ó rei, meu senhor. Eu e tudo o que tenho somos teus”.

5 A nd the messengers turn back and say, `Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give;

Os mensageiros voltaram ao rei e disseram: “Assim diz Ben-Hadade: ‘Mandei tomar sua prata e seu ouro, suas mulheres e seus filhos.

6 f or if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.'

Mas amanhã, a esta hora, enviarei meus oficiais para vasculharem o seu palácio e as casas dos seus oficiais. Eles me trarão tudo o que você considera de valor’”.

7 A nd the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, `Know, I pray you, and see that evil this is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.'

O rei de Israel convocou todas as autoridades de Israel e lhes disse: “Vejam como esse homem está querendo a nossa desgraça! Quando mandou tomar as minhas mulheres e os meus filhos, a minha prata e o meu ouro, eu não lhe neguei!”

8 A nd all the elders and all the people say unto him, `Do not hearken, nor consent.'

As autoridades e todo o povo responderam: “Não lhe dês atenção nem concordes com as suas exigências”.

9 A nd he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, `Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;' and the messengers go and take him back word.

E ele respondeu aos mensageiros de Ben-Hadade: “Digam ao rei, meu senhor: Teu servo fará tudo o que exigiste na primeira vez, mas não posso atender a esta exigência”. E eles levaram a resposta a Ben-Hadade.

10 A nd Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, `Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who at my feet.'

Então Ben-Hadade mandou esta outra mensagem a Acabe: “Que os deuses me castiguem com todo o rigor, caso fique em Samaria pó suficiente para dar um punhado a cada um dos meus homens”.

11 A nd the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing.'

O rei de Israel respondeu: “Digam-lhe: ‘Quem está vestindo a sua armadura não deve se gabar como aquele que a está tirando’”.

12 A nd it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word -- and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths -- that he saith unto his servants, `Set yourselves;' and they set themselves against the city.

Ben-Hadade recebeu essa mensagem quando ele e os reis estavam bebendo em suas tendas, e ordenou aos seus homens: “Preparem-se para atacar a cidade”. E eles lhe obedeceram. A Derrota de Ben-Hadade

13 A nd lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, `Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I Jehovah.'

Nessa ocasião, um profeta foi até Acabe, rei de Israel, e anunciou: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Vê este exército enorme? Hoje eu o entregarei nas suas mãos, e então você saberá que eu sou o Senhor ’”.

14 A nd Ahab saith, `By whom?' and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;' and he saith, `Who doth direct the battle?' and he saith, `Thou.'

“Mas quem fará isso?”, perguntou Acabe. O profeta respondeu: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Os jovens soldados dos líderes das províncias o farão’”. “E quem começará a batalha?”, perguntou. O profeta respondeu: “Você”.

15 A nd he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand,

Então Acabe convocou os jovens soldados dos líderes das províncias, duzentos e trinta e dois homens. Em seguida reuniu o restante dos israelitas, sete mil ao todo.

16 a nd they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking -- drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him.

Eles partiram ao meio-dia, enquanto Ben-Hadade e os trinta e dois reis aliados a ele estavam se embriagando nas suas tendas.

17 A nd the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, `Men have come out of Samaria.'

Os jovens soldados dos líderes das províncias saíram primeiro. Nisso, uma patrulha de Ben-Hadade informou: “Saíram alguns homens de Samaria”.

18 A nd he saith, `If for peace they have come out -- catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out -- alive catch them.'

Ele disse: “Quer tenham saído para a paz, quer para a guerra, tragam-nos vivos”.

19 A nd these have gone out of the city -- the young men of the heads of the provinces -- and the force that after them,

Os jovens soldados dos líderes das províncias marcharam para fora da cidade, com o exército na retaguarda,

20 a nd smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen;

e cada um matou o seu adversário. Diante disso, os arameus fugiram, perseguidos pelos israelitas. Mas Ben-Hadade, rei da Síria, escapou a cavalo com alguns de seus cavaleiros.

21 a nd the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting.

O rei de Israel avançou e matou os cavalos e destruiu os carros de guerra e infligiu pesadas baixas aos arameus.

22 A nd the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, `Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.'

Depois disso, o profeta foi ao rei de Israel e disse: “Fortaleça a sua posição e veja o que deve ser feito, pois na próxima primavera o rei da Síria o atacará de novo”.

23 A nd the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, `Gods of hills their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain -- are we not stronger than they?

Enquanto isso, os conselheiros do rei da Síria lhe diziam: “Os deuses deles são deuses das montanhas. É por isso que eles foram fortes demais para nós. Mas, se os combatermos nas planícies, com certeza seremos mais fortes do que eles.

24 ` And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead;

Deves tirar todos os reis dos seus comandos e substituí-los por outros comandantes.

25 a nd thou, number to thee a force as the force that is fallen from thee, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?' and he hearkeneth to their voice, and doth so.

Também deves organizar um exército como o que perdeste, cavalo por cavalo e carro por carro, para que possamos combater Israel nas planícies. Então é certo que os venceremos”. Ele concordou com eles e fez como foi aconselhado.

26 A nd it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,

Na primavera seguinte Ben-Hadade convocou os arameus e marchou até Afeque para lutar contra Israel.

27 a nd the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Aramaeans have filled the land.

Os israelitas foram convocados e, tendo recebido provisões, saíram para enfrentar os arameus. Os israelitas acamparam no lado oposto como dois pequenos rebanhos de cabras, enquanto os arameus cobriam todo o campo.

28 A nd there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills Jehovah, and He not God of valleys -- I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I Jehovah.'

O homem de Deus foi ao rei de Israel e lhe disse: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Como os arameus pensam que o Senhor é um deus das montanhas e não um deus dos vales, eu entregarei esse exército enorme nas suas mãos, e vocês saberão que eu sou o Senhor ’”.

29 A nd they encamp one over-against another seven days, and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draweth near, and the sons of Israel smite Aram -- a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

Durante sete dias estiveram acampados em frente um do outro, e no sétimo dia entraram em combate. Num só dia os israelitas mataram cem mil soldados de infantaria arameus.

30 A nd those left flee to Aphek, unto the city, and the wall falleth on twenty and seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad hath fled, and cometh in unto the city, into the innermost part.

O restante deles escapou para a cidade de Afeque, onde o muro caiu sobre vinte e sete mil deles. Ben-Hadade também fugiu para a cidade e se escondeu, ora numa casa, ora noutra.

31 A nd his servants say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel -- that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.'

Seus oficiais lhe disseram: “Soubemos que os reis do povo de Israel são misericordiosos. Nós vamos até o rei de Israel vestidos com panos de saco e com cordas no pescoço. Talvez ele poupe a tua vida”.

32 A nd they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, `Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;' and he saith, `Is he yet alive? he my brother.'

Vestindo panos de saco e tendo cordas envolvendo o pescoço, foram ao rei de Israel e disseram: “Teu servo Ben-Hadade diz: ‘Rogo-te que me deixes viver’”. O rei respondeu: “Ele ainda está vivo? Ele é meu irmão!”

33 A nd the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, `Thy brother Ben-Hadad;' and he saith, `Go ye in, bring him;' and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot.

Os homens interpretaram isso como um bom sinal e de imediato aproveitaram o que ele tinha dito. “Isso mesmo, teu irmão Ben-Hadade!”, disseram. “Tragam-no aqui”, disse o rei. Quando Ben-Hadade chegou, Acabe o fez subir no seu carro.

34 A nd he saith unto him, `The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;' -- `and I, with a covenant, send thee away;' and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away.

“Devolverei as cidades que o meu pai tomou do teu pai”, ofereceu Ben-Hadade. “Tu poderás estabelecer os teus próprios mercados em Damasco, como fez meu pai em Samaria.” Acabe disse: “Mediante um tratado, libertarei você”. Então fizeram um tratado, e Acabe o deixou ir. Um Profeta Condena Acabe

35 A nd a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man refuseth to smite him,

Por ordem do Senhor um dos discípulos dos profetas disse ao seu companheiro: “Fira-me”, mas o homem se recusou a fazê-lo.

36 a nd he saith to him, `Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;' and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him.

Então o profeta disse: “Como você não obedeceu ao Senhor, assim que você sair daqui um leão o ferirá”. E, logo que o homem partiu, um leão o atacou e o feriu.

37 A nd he findeth another man, and saith, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding,

O profeta encontrou outro homem e lhe disse: “Fira-me, por favor”. Este o atingiu e o feriu.

38 a nd the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes.

Então o profeta saiu e ficou ao lado da estrada, à espera do rei. Ele se disfarçou, cobrindo os olhos com sua testeira.

39 A nd it cometh to pass -- the king is passing by -- that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, `Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out;

Quando o rei ia passando, o profeta gritou para ele: “Em pleno combate teu servo entrou, e alguém veio a mim com um prisioneiro e me disse: ‘Vigie este homem. Se ele escapar, será a sua vida pela dele, ou você deverá pagar trinta e cinco quilos de prata’.

40 a nd it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!' and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right thy judgment; thou hast determined.'

Enquanto o teu servo estava ocupado com outras coisas, o homem desapareceu”. “Essa é a sua sentença”, disse o rei de Israel. “Você mesmo a pronunciou.”

41 A nd he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he of the prophets,

Então o profeta rapidamente removeu a testeira dos olhos, e o rei o reconheceu como um dos profetas.

42 a nd he saith unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;'

Ele disse ao rei: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Você libertou um homem que eu havia decidido que devia morrer. Por isso, é a sua vida pela vida dele, o seu povo pelo povo dele’”.

43 a nd the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria.

Aborrecido e irritado, o rei de Israel voltou para o seu palácio em Samaria.
