1 A nd Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it,

Un día el rey Ben Adad de Siria reunió a todo su ejército, y convocó a treinta y dos reyes aliados con su caballería y sus carros de combate, y se dirigió a Samaria para atacarla, y la sitió.

2 a nd sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city,

Envió mensajeros al rey Ajab, que estaba en la ciudad, a que le dijeran:

3 a nd saith to him, `Thus said Ben-Hadad, `Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons -- the best -- are mine.'

«El rey Ben Adad te manda decir: “Tu plata y tu oro me pertenecen, lo mismo que tus mujeres y tus hermosos hijos.”»

4 A nd the king of Israel answereth and saith, `According to thy word, my lord, O king: I thine, and all that I have.'

El rey de Israel le respondió: «¡Por supuesto! ¡Todo lo que tengo le pertenece a Su Majestad!»

5 A nd the messengers turn back and say, `Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give;

Los mensajeros volvieron a hablar con Ajab, y le dijeron: «El rey Ben Adad ha dicho: “He mandado a decirte que vas a entregarme tu plata y tu oro, lo mismo que tus mujeres y tus hijos.

6 f or if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.'

Prepárate, porque mañana a esta misma hora van a llegar mis siervos a registrar tu palacio y las casas de tus oficiales, y se llevarán todo lo que tengas de valor.”»

7 A nd the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, `Know, I pray you, and see that evil this is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.'

El rey de Israel convocó entonces a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo: «¿Se dan cuenta de que ese rey está buscando perjudicarme? Me pidió que le entregara mis tesoros de plata y de oro, y hasta mis mujeres y mis hijos, ¡y no se los negué!»

8 A nd all the elders and all the people say unto him, `Do not hearken, nor consent.'

Los ancianos y todo el pueblo le aconsejaron: «No le hagas caso. No hagas lo que te pide.»

9 A nd he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, `Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;' and the messengers go and take him back word.

Entonces Ajab respondió a los embajadores: «Digan a Su Majestad que voy a hacer lo que me pidió la primera vez. Pero esto otro no lo voy a hacer.» Los embajadores llevaron la respuesta a su rey,

10 A nd Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, `Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who at my feet.'

y una vez más Ben Adad mandó a decirle: «¡Que los dioses me castiguen duramente, y más aún, si queda en Samaria el polvo suficiente para que mis ejércitos se lleven un puñado de sus ruinas!»

11 A nd the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing.'

Y el rey de Israel le respondió: «Díganle a su rey que una cosa es ceñirse la espada, y otra muy distinta volver victorioso del campo de batalla.»

12 A nd it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word -- and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths -- that he saith unto his servants, `Set yourselves;' and they set themselves against the city.

Cuando Ben Adad recibió la respuesta de Ajab, estaba en su campamento bebiendo con los demás reyes, y al instante ordenó a sus oficiales que se prepararan para atacar la ciudad.

13 A nd lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, `Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I Jehovah.'

Pero un profeta fue a ver al rey Ajab de Israel, y le dijo: «Así ha dicho el Señor: “¿Ves esta gran muchedumbre? Hoy mismo voy a entregarla en tus manos, para que reconozcas que yo soy el Señor.”»

14 A nd Ahab saith, `By whom?' and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;' and he saith, `Who doth direct the battle?' and he saith, `Thou.'

Y Ajab le preguntó: «¿Y quién me ayudará a derrotarlos?» Y el profeta respondió: «Así ha dicho el Señor: “Te ayudarán los siervos de los jefes de las provincias.”» Pero Ajab volvió a preguntar: «¿Y quién atacará primero?» Y el profeta le dijo: «Tú atacarás primero.»

15 A nd he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand,

Entonces Ajab pasó revista a los siervos de los jefes de las provincias, y eran doscientos treinta y dos guerreros. Luego pasó revista a todo el ejército israelita, y contó siete mil guerreros.

16 a nd they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking -- drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him.

Se pusieron en marcha al mediodía, saliendo de Samaria, mientras Ben Adad y los treinta y dos reyes que lo apoyaban seguían emborrachándose en su campamento.

17 A nd the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, `Men have come out of Samaria.'

Los primeros en salir de la ciudad fueron los siervos de los jefes de provincia. Pero Ben Adad había puesto espías, que al ver salir soldados de Samaria corrieron a decírselo al rey.

18 A nd he saith, `If for peace they have come out -- catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out -- alive catch them.'

Entonces Ben Adad dijo: «Sea que vengan en son de paz, o que vengan en son de guerra, captúrenlos vivos.»

19 A nd these have gone out of the city -- the young men of the heads of the provinces -- and the force that after them,

Los siervos de los jefes salieron de la ciudad, y tras ellos salió todo el ejército,

20 a nd smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen;

y trabaron combate unos contra otros, pero los israelitas hicieron huir a los sirios, y los persiguieron. Entonces el rey Ben Adad de Siria montó en un caballo y escapó acompañado de algunos jinetes.

21 a nd the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting.

El rey de Israel remató a la caballería, destruyó los carros de combate, y causó grandes estragos entre el ejército sirio.

22 A nd the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, `Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.'

Luego, el profeta se presentó ante Ajab y le dijo: «Ahora debes reagrupar tus fuerzas y pensar lo que debes hacer, porque dentro de un año el rey de Siria volverá para pelear contra ti.»

23 A nd the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, `Gods of hills their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain -- are we not stronger than they?

Por su parte, los oficiales del rey de Siria le dijeron: «Los dioses de los israelitas nos vencieron porque habitan en los montes; pero si peleamos contra ellos en las llanuras, con toda seguridad los venceremos.

24 ` And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead;

Lo que debes hacer es quitarles el mando a los reyes, y poner en su lugar a los oficiales de tu ejército.

25 a nd thou, number to thee a force as the force that is fallen from thee, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?' and he hearkeneth to their voice, and doth so.

También debes reponer el ejército que perdiste, jinete por jinete y carro por carro; entonces volveremos a luchar contra los israelitas en las llanuras, y con toda seguridad los venceremos.» Y el rey siguió el consejo.

26 A nd it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,

Un año después, Ben Adad pasó revista al ejército sirio y marchó hasta Afec para pelear contra Israel.

27 a nd the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Aramaeans have filled the land.

También los israelitas pasaron revista, se abastecieron de víveres y marcharon al encuentro de los sirios. Acamparon frente al campamento sirio como si fueran dos pequeños rebaños de cabras; los sirios, en cambio, cubrían toda la llanura.

28 A nd there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills Jehovah, and He not God of valleys -- I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I Jehovah.'

Entonces el varón de Dios fue a ver al rey de Israel y le dijo: «Así ha dicho el Señor: “Los sirios creen que yo, el Señor, soy un Dios de los montes pero no un Dios de los valles. Pues para que todos reconozcan mi poder, voy a poner en tus manos a ese ejército tan numeroso. Así reconocerán ustedes que yo soy el Señor.”»

29 A nd they encamp one over-against another seven days, and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draweth near, and the sons of Israel smite Aram -- a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

Ambos ejércitos acamparon durante siete días en el valle, uno frente al otro, y el séptimo día comenzó la batalla. Ese mismo día, el ejército israelita mató a cien mil soldados sirios de infantería;

30 A nd those left flee to Aphek, unto the city, and the wall falleth on twenty and seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad hath fled, and cometh in unto the city, into the innermost part.

el resto del ejército sirio huyó y se refugió en la ciudad de Afec, pero la muralla de la ciudad se les vino abajo y sepultó a veintisiete mil soldados que habían logrado escapar. También Ben Adad entró en la ciudad, y para salvarse iba escondiéndose de casa en casa.

31 A nd his servants say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel -- that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.'

Entonces sus oficiales le dijeron: «Hemos sabido que los reyes de Israel son clementes. Si nos vestimos con cilicio y nos ponemos una soga al cuello, y nos presentamos ante el rey, tal vez tenga compasión de ti y te perdone la vida.»

32 A nd they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, `Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;' and he saith, `Is he yet alive? he my brother.'

Entonces se vistieron de cilicio y se pusieron sogas en el cuello, y fueron a ver al rey. Le dijeron: «Tu siervo Ben Adad te ruega que le perdones la vida.» Y Ajab respondió: «Si el rey vive todavía, entonces es mi hermano.»

33 A nd the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, `Thy brother Ben-Hadad;' and he saith, `Go ye in, bring him;' and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot.

Los oficiales que fueron a ver al rey Ajab tomaron como buena señal estas palabras, y respondieron: «Tu hermano Ben Adad está vivo.» Ajab les dijo: «Quiero verlo. Vayan por él.» Ben Adad se presentó entonces ante Ajab, y éste lo invitó a subirse a su carro.

34 A nd he saith unto him, `The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;' -- `and I, with a covenant, send thee away;' and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away.

Y Ben Adad le dijo a Ajab: «Hoy te devuelvo las ciudades que mi padre le quitó al tuyo. Toma posesión de Damasco, como mi padre lo hizo con Samaria.» Y Ajab respondió: «Éste es un pacto entre tú y yo. Puedes irte.»

35 A nd a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man refuseth to smite him,

En ese momento, uno de los profetas le pidió a uno de sus compañeros que lo golpeara, pero su compañero no quiso hacerlo.

36 a nd he saith to him, `Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;' and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him.

Entonces aquel profeta le dijo: «Puesto que no obedeciste a la palabra del Señor, en cuanto me dejes y tomes tu camino, te herirá un león.» En efecto, cuando ese hombre se separó del profeta, le salió un león en el camino y lo mató.

37 A nd he findeth another man, and saith, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding,

Luego, el profeta vio a otro hombre y le pidió que lo hiriera, y aquel hombre obedeció; le dio un golpe y lo dejó herido.

38 a nd the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes.

Entonces el profeta se puso una venda sobre los ojos y, con ese disfraz, fue y se enfrentó al rey en el camino.

39 A nd it cometh to pass -- the king is passing by -- that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, `Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out;

En el momento en que el rey pasaba, el profeta gritó y dijo: «Este siervo de Su Majestad estaba en medio de la batalla, cuando de pronto se me acercó un soldado, y me entregó a un prisionero y me dijo: “Cuida bien a este prisionero. No lo dejes escapar. Si se escapa, tú me responderás con tu vida, o me pagarás tres mil monedas de plata.”

40 a nd it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!' and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right thy judgment; thou hast determined.'

Como yo estaba muy ocupado, haciendo varias cosas, ¡el prisionero se escapó!» Entonces el rey le dijo: «Tu sentencia es clara, y tú mismo la has dictado.»

41 A nd he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he of the prophets,

En ese momento, el profeta se quitó la venda de los ojos, y el rey se dio cuenta de que se trataba de uno de los profetas.

42 a nd he saith unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;'

Entonces el profeta le dijo: «Así ha dicho el Señor: “Puesto que dejaste al hombre que yo había condenado a muerte, tú morirás en su lugar, y tu pueblo morirá en lugar de su pueblo.”»

43 a nd the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria.

El rey de Israel siguió su camino, y llegó a Samaria, pero iba triste y enojado.
