1 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Joshua, saying,

Después, el Señor le dijo a Josué:

2 ` Speak unto the sons of Israel, saying, Give for you cities of refuge, as I have spoken unto you by the hand of Moses,

«Reúne a los hijos de Israel, y diles que elijan las ciudades de refugio, de las que ya les había hablado por medio de Moisés.

3 f or the fleeing thither of a man-slayer smiting life inadvertently, without knowledge; and they have been to you for a refuge from the redeemer of blood.

En ellas se refugiará el homicida que de manera accidental, y no intencionalmente, haya dado muerte a alguien. Allí podrá protegerse de quien quiera tomar venganza.

4 ` When hath fled unto one of these cities, and hath stood the opening of the gate of the city, and hath spoken in the ears of the elders of that city his matter, then they have gathered him into the city unto them, and have given to him a place, and he hath dwelt with them.

Quien se refugie en alguna de esas ciudades, deberá presentarse a la entrada de la ciudad y exponer sus razones ante los ancianos; entonces ellos lo recibirán, lo llevarán dentro de la ciudad, y le asignarán un lugar donde vivir.

5 ` And when the redeemer of blood doth pursue after him, then they do not shut up the man-slayer into his hand, for without knowledge he hath smitten his neighbour, and is not hating him hitherto;

Si el que quiere tomar venganza lo persigue, no podrán entregar al homicida, porque la muerte de su prójimo fue accidental, y no por enemistad alguna.

6 a nd he hath dwelt in that city till his standing before the company for judgment, till the death of the chief priest who is in those days -- then doth the man-slayer turn back and hath come unto his city, and unto his house, unto the city whence he fled.'

El homicida se quedará en la ciudad hasta que comparezca ante todo el pueblo, y hasta que muera el sumo sacerdote en turno. Sólo entonces podrá el homicida volver a su casa y a la ciudad de donde huyó.»

7 A nd they sanctify Kedesh in Galilee, in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kirjath-Arba (it Hebron), in the hill-country of Judah;

Entonces se eligieron estas ciudades: Cedes, en Galilea, en el monte de Neftalí; Siquén, en el monte de Efraín, y Quiriat Arbá (que es Hebrón), en el monte de Judá.

8 a nd beyond the Jordan, Jericho eastward, they have given Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

Al otro lado del Jordán, al oriente de Jericó, eligieron las ciudades de Beser, en el desierto, en la llanura de la tribu de Rubén; Ramot en Galaad, de la tribu de Gad, y Golán en Basán, de la tribu de Manasés.

9 T hese have been cities of meeting for all the sons of Israel, and for a sojourner who is sojourning in their midst, for the fleeing thither of any one smiting life inadvertently, and he doth not die by the hand of the redeemer of blood till his standing before the company.

Éstas fueron las ciudades elegidas para que, en caso de una muerte accidental, se pudieran refugiar todos los hijos de Israel, y los extranjeros que vivieran entre ellos, hasta que comparecieran delante de todo el pueblo. Así no serían muertos a manos del que quisiera tomar venganza.
