1 A nd it cometh to pass, in those days, when there is no king in Israel, that there is a man a Levite, a sojourner in the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he taketh to him a wife, a concubine, out of Beth-Lehem-Judah;

En aquellos tiempos, cuando Israel no tenía rey, hubo un levita forastero que vivía en la parte más lejana de los montes de Efraín. Este levita había tomado como concubina a una mujer de Belén de Judá,

2 a nd commit whoredom against him doth his concubine, and she goeth from him unto the house of her father, unto Beth-Lehem-Judah, and is there days -- four months.

pero ella le fue infiel y se regresó a la casa de su padre, en Belén de Judá, donde estuvo cuatro meses.

3 A nd her husband riseth and goeth after her, to speak unto her heart, to bring her back, and his young man with him, and a couple of asses; and she bringeth him into the house of her father, and the father of the young woman seeth him, and rejoiceth to meet him.

Entonces su marido fue a buscarla, y le habló con mucho cariño para hacerla volver. Llevó consigo a uno de sus criados y un par de asnos. Su mujer le pidió que entrara a la casa, y cuando el padre de la joven lo vio, salió a recibirlo muy contento.

4 A nd keep hold on him doth his father-in-law, father of the young woman, and he abideth with him three days, and they eat and drink, and lodge there.

Y así, el levita se quedó tres días en casa de su suegro comiendo y bebiendo.

5 A nd it cometh to pass, on the fourth day, that they rise early in the morning, and he riseth to go, and the father of the young woman saith unto his son-in-law, `Support thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye go on.'

Al cuarto día por la mañana, el levita se levantó con la intensión de irse, pero el padre de la joven le dijo: «Cobren fuerzas con un bocado de pan, y después podrán irse.»

6 A nd they sit and eat both of them together, and drink, and the father of the young woman saith unto the man, `Be willing, I pray thee, and lodge all night, and let thy heart be glad.'

Los dos se sentaron, y comieron y bebieron. Luego el padre de la joven le dijo al levita: «Te ruego que pasen otra noche en mi casa, y que disfrutes de estar aquí.»

7 A nd the man riseth to go, and his father-in-law presseth on him, and he turneth back and lodgeth there.

Sin embargo, el levita se levantó con la intención de partir. Pero su suegro insistió, y volvieron a pasar la noche allí.

8 A nd he riseth early in the morning, on the fifth day, to go, and the father of the young woman saith, `Support, I pray thee, thy heart;' and they have tarried till the turning of the day, and they eat, both of them.

Al quinto día, nuevamente se levantaron muy de mañana para irse, pero otra vez el padre de la joven le dijo: «Por favor, recobra las fuerzas, y espera a que termine el día.» Y los dos comieron.

9 A nd the man riseth to go, he and his concubine, and his young man, and his father-in-law, father of the young woman, saith to him, `Lo, I pray thee, the day hath fallen toward evening, lodge all night, I pray thee; lo, the declining of the day! lodge here, and let thine heart be glad -- and ye have risen early to-morrow for your journey, and thou hast gone to thy tent.'

Pero cuando el levita se preparó para irse, con su esposa y su criado, su suegro volvió a decirle: «Mira, ya pronto va a anochecer. Por favor, pasen aquí la noche, pues el día está por terminar. Quédense aquí, y disfruten. Ya mañana temprano se levantarán y podrán emprender el camino de regreso a su casa.»

10 A nd the man hath not been willing to lodge all night, and he riseth, and goeth, and cometh in till over-against Jebus (It Jerusalem), and with him a couple of asses saddled; and his concubine with him.

Pero el levita ya no quiso pasar allí la noche, sino que se levantó, aparejó sus asnos, tomó a su mujer y llegó hasta la entrada de Jebús, que es Jerusalén.

11 T hey near Jebus, and the day hath gone greatly down, and the young man saith unto his lord, `Come, I pray thee, and we turn aside unto this city of the Jebusite, and lodge in it.'

Para entonces el día había declinado y comenzaba a anochecer, por lo que el criado le dijo: «Te ruego que entremos a la ciudad de los jebuseos, para pasar allí la noche.»

12 A nd his lord saith unto him, `Let us not turn aside unto the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israel, thither, but we have passed over unto Gibeah.'

Su amo respondió, y dijo a su criado: «No vamos a entrar a ninguna ciudad de extranjeros, que no sea una ciudad israelita. Seguiremos hasta Gabaa.

13 A nd he saith to his young man, `Come, and we draw near to one of the places, and have lodged in Gibeah, or in Ramah.'

Cuando lleguemos a Gabaa, o a Ramá, podremos pasar la noche allí.»

14 A nd they pass over, and go on, and the sun goeth in upon them near Gibeah, which is to Benjamin;

Y así, siguieron su camino. Al ponerse el sol, llegaron cerca de Gabaa, en la tierra de Benjamín.

15 a nd they turn aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah, and he goeth in and sitteth in a broad place of the city, and there is no man gathering them into the house to lodge.

Entonces se apartaron del camino para entrar a la ciudad y pasar allí la noche. Al entrar, fueron a sentarse en la plaza, pues nadie les ofreció su casa para que pudieran dormir.

16 A nd lo, a man, an aged one, hath come from his work from the field in the evening, and the man of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he a sojourner in Gibeah, and the men of the place Benjamites.

Al anochecer, vieron llegar a un anciano, que venía del campo después de trabajar. Ese anciano era de los montes de Efraín, pero vivía como forastero en Gabaa, pues los habitantes de ese lugar eran de la tribu de Benjamín.

17 A nd he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the man, the traveller, in a broad place of the city, and the aged man saith, `Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?'

Cuando el anciano levantó la mirada, vio al viajero en la plaza y le preguntó: «¿De dónde vienes, y adónde vas?»

18 A nd he saith unto him, `We are passing over from Beth-Lehem-Judah unto the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim -- thence I, and I go unto Beth-Lehem-Judah; and to the house of Jehovah I am going, and there is no man gathering me into the house,

El viajero respondió: «Venimos de Belén de Judá, y vamos a lo más alejado de los montes de Efraín, de donde soy. Estoy regresando de Belén de Judá, y ahora me dirijo a la casa del Señor. Nadie me ha dado alojamiento en su casa.

19 a nd both straw and provender are for our asses, and also bread and wine there are for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man with thy servants; there is no lack of anything.'

Pero tenemos todo lo que necesitan nuestros asnos, y pan y vino para mí y para mi mujer, y para el criado que me acompaña. No nos hace falta nada.»

20 A nd the old man saith, `Peace to thee; only, all thy lack on me, only in the broad place lodge not.'

Y el anciano le respondió: «Que la paz sea contigo. Desde ahora, lo que necesites corre por mi cuenta. Sólo una cosa: no quiero que pases la noche en la calle.»

21 A nd he bringeth him in to his house, and mixeth for the asses, and they wash their feet, and eat and drink.

Y el anciano los llevó a su casa, y les dio de comer a sus asnos; luego ellos se lavaron los pies, y comieron y bebieron.

22 T hey are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men -- sons of worthlessness -- have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, `Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.'

Pero cuando estaban disfrutando de todo, unos hombres corruptos de la ciudad rodearon la casa, golpearon la puerta, y le gritaron al anciano, dueño de la casa: «¡Saca al hombre que ha entrado en tu casa! ¡Queremos acostarnos con él!»

23 A nd the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, `Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;

El dueño de la casa salió y les dijo: «¡No, hermanos míos! ¡Yo les ruego que no le hagan daño a este hombre! ¡Es mi huésped! ¡No cometan tal perversidad!

24 l o, my daughter, the virgin, and his concubine, let me bring them out, I pray you, and humble ye them, and do to them that which is good in your eyes, and to this man do not this foolish thing.'

Miren, tengo una hija que es virgen, y también está aquí su mujer. Ahora mismo las voy a sacar, para que hagan con ellas lo que les parezca. ¡Pero no cometan una infamia con este hombre!»

25 A nd the men have not been willing to hearken to him, and the man taketh hold on his concubine, and bringeth out unto them without, and they know her, and roll themselves upon her all the night, till the morning, and send her away in the ascending of the dawn;

Pero como aquellos hombres no le hicieron caso al anciano, el levita tomó a su mujer y la sacó, y ellos la violaron durante toda la noche y hasta la mañana. Al rayar el alba, la dejaron en paz.

26 a nd the woman cometh in at the turning of the morning, and falleth at the opening of the man's house, where her lord, till the light.

Antes de amanecer, la mujer llegó hasta la puerta de la casa del anciano, donde estaba su marido, y allí cayó muerta, hasta que amaneció.

27 A nd her lord riseth in the morning, and openeth the doors of the house, and goeth out to go on his way, and lo, the woman, his concubine, is fallen at the opening of the house, and her hands on the threshold,

Por la mañana, el levita se levantó y abrió las puertas, dispuesto a seguir su camino. Fue entonces cuando vio que su concubina estaba tendida a la entrada de la casa, con las manos sobre el umbral de la puerta.

28 a nd he saith unto her, `Rise, and we go;' and there is none answering, and he taketh her on the ass, and the man riseth and goeth to his place,

Entonces le dijo: «¡Levántate, y vámonos!» Pero como ella no respondió, el levita la levantó, la echó sobre su asno, y se fue a su tierra.

29 a nd cometh in unto his house, and taketh the knife, and layeth hold on his concubine, and cutteth her in pieces to her bones -- into twelve pieces, and sendeth her into all the border of Israel.

Al llegar a su casa, tomó un cuchillo y descuartizó a su mujer en doce pedazos, y repartió los pedazos por todo el territorio de Israel.

30 A nd it hath come to pass, every one who seeth hath said, `There hath not been -- yea, there hath not been seen like this, from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt till this day; set your upon it, take counsel, and speak.'

Todos los que veían eso, decían: «Desde que los israelitas llegaron de Egipto, y hasta nuestros días, ¡jamás se había visto que alguien hiciera algo así! Esto da en qué pensar. Tenemos que ponernos de acuerdo, y actuar!»
