1 A nd there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying,

La palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo:

2 ` Go, and thou hast called in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus said Jehovah: I have remembered for thee The kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, Thy going after Me in a wilderness, in a land not sown.

«Ve y proclama a oídos de Jerusalén lo siguiente: “Así dice el Señor: ‘Me acuerdo de ti y de tu fidelidad, cuando eras joven; de tu amor de novia, cuando me seguías por el desierto, en terrenos no sembrados.’”»

3 H oly Israel to Jehovah, The first-fruit of His increase, All consuming him are guilty, Evil cometh in unto them, an affirmation of Jehovah.

Israel estaba consagrada al Señor. Era como los primeros frutos de su cosecha. Todos los que la devoraban tenían que cargar con su culpa; el mal les sobrevenía. —Palabra del Señor.

4 H ear a word of Jehovah, O house of Jacob, And all ye families of the house of Israel.

Tú, casa de Jacob, y ustedes todas, familias de la casa de Israel: ¡escuchen la palabra del Señor!

5 T hus said Jehovah: What -- have your fathers found in Me perversity, That they have gone far off from Me, And go after the vanity, and become vain,

Así dice el Señor: «¿Qué de malo hallaron en mí los padres de ustedes, que se alejaron de mí y se fueron en pos de la vanidad, con lo que se hicieron vanos?

6 A nd have not said, Where Jehovah, Who bringeth us up out of the land of Egypt, Who leadeth us in a wilderness, In a land of deserts and pits, In a dry land, and of death-shade, In a land -- none hath passed through it, Nor dwelt hath man there?'

Jamás dijeron: “¿Dónde está el Señor, que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto y nos condujo por el desierto, por tierra desierta y despoblada, por tierra seca y terriblemente sombría, por tierra que nadie transitó ni jamás habitó?”

7 Y ea, I bring you in to a land of fruitful fields, To eat its fruit and its goodness, And ye come in and defile My land, And Mine inheritance have made an abomination.

»Yo los introduje en una tierra de abundancia, para que disfrutaran de su fruto y sus bondades; pero ustedes entraron y contaminaron mi tierra; ¡convirtieron mi heredad en algo repugnante!

8 T he priests have not said, `Where Jehovah?' And those handling the law have not known Me. And the shepherds transgressed against Me, And the prophets have prophesied by Baal, And after those who profit not have gone.

Jamás dijeron los sacerdotes: “¿Dónde está el Señor?”, ni tampoco los que detentaban la ley me conocieron; los guías del pueblo se rebelaron contra mí; ¡los profetas hablaron en nombre de Baal, y se fueron en pos de dioses inútiles!

9 T herefore, yet I plead with you, An affirmation of Jehovah, And with your sons' sons I plead.

»Por eso, voy a entablar un juicio contra ustedes, contra sus hijos y contra sus nietos. —Palabra del Señor.

10 F or, pass to the isles of Chittim, and see, And to Kedar send, and consider well, And see if there hath been like this:

»Pasen ahora a las costas de Quitín, y fíjense; envíen observadores a Cedar, y pónganse a pensar seriamente; vean si se ha incurrido en algo semejante a esto.

11 H ath a nation changed gods? (And they no gods!) And My people hath changed its honour For that which doth not profit.

Ninguna de esas naciones ha cambiado a sus dioses. ¡Y eso que no son dioses! Pero mi pueblo ha cambiado a su Dios glorioso por lo que no les sirve para nada.

12 B e astonished, ye heavens, at this, Yea, be frightened, be greatly wasted, An affirmation of Jehovah.

Ustedes los cielos, ¡espántense al ver esto! ¡Horrorícense! ¡Llénense de angustia! —Palabra del Señor.

13 F or two evils hath My people done, Me they have forsaken, a fountain of living waters, To hew out for themselves wells -- broken wells, That contain not the waters.

»Son dos los males en que ha incurrido mi pueblo: Me han dejado a mí, que soy fuente de agua viva, y han cavado sus propias cisternas, ¡tan agrietadas que no retienen el agua!

14 A servant Israel? Is he a child of the house? Wherefore hath he been for a prey?

»¿Acaso eres siervo, Israel? ¿O esclavo? ¿Por qué, entonces, te tratan como a botín de guerra?

15 A gainst him roar do young lions, They have given forth their voice, And make his land become a desolation, His cities have been burnt without inhabitant.

Los cachorros de león rugen contra ti; gruñen con fuerza y devastan tu tierra; ¡queman tus ciudades y las dejan sin habitantes!

16 A lso sons of Noph and Tahapanes Consume thee -- the crown of the head!

¡Hasta la gente de Menfis y de Tafnes te ha roto la coronilla!

17 D ost thou not do this to thyself? thy forsaking Jehovah thy God, At the time He is leading thee in the way?

Y esto te sucedió por haber dejado al Señor tu Dios, cuando él te conducía por el camino.

18 A nd now, what -- to thee in the way of Egypt, To drink the waters of Sihor? And what -- to thee in the way of Asshur, To drink the waters of the River?

Dime, pues, ¿qué esperas hallar en el camino de Egipto, que sacias tu sed en el Nilo? ¿Qué esperas hallar en el camino de Asiria, que sacias tu sed en el Éufrates?

19 I nstruct thee doth thy wickedness, And thy backslidings reprove thee, Know and see that an evil and a bitter thing thy forsaking Jehovah thy God, And My fear not being on thee, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah of Hosts.

Tu maldad te castigará, y tus rebeldías te condenarán. ¡Date cuenta! Ve cuán malo y amargo ha sido el que hayas dejado al Señor tu Dios, y el no tener temor de mí. —Palabra del Señor, el Dios de los ejércitos.

20 F or from of old thou hast broken thy yoke, Drawn away thy bands, and sayest, `I do not serve,' For, on every high height, and under every green tree, Thou art wandering -- a harlot.

»Tú, desde hace mucho tiempo rompiste el yugo y te quitaste las ataduras. Tú dijiste: “No quiero servir.” Tú, en la cima de cualquier monte elevado, o a la sombra de cualquier árbol frondoso, te entregaste como una cualquiera.

21 A nd I planted thee a choice vine, wholly a true seed, And how hast thou been turned to Me, To the degenerate shoots of a strange vine?

Yo te planté de una vid escogida, de simiente de pura cepa. ¿Cómo es que me resultaste un sarmiento de vid extraña?

22 B ut though thou dost wash with nitre, And dost multiply to thyself soap, Marked is thine iniquity before Me, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

Aunque te laves con lejía, y te enjabones demasiado, no se borra de mi vista la mancha de tu pecado. —Palabra de Dios el Señor.

23 H ow sayest thou, `I have not been defiled, After the Baalim I have not gone?' See thy way in a valley, know what thou hast done, A swift dromedary winding her ways,

»¿Cómo te atreves a decir: “No soy inmunda. Nunca me fui en pos de los baales”? ¡Mira cómo te has conducido en el valle! ¡Reconoce lo que has hecho, dromedaria fácil que te apartas del camino;

24 A wild ass accustomed to a wilderness, In the desire of her soul she hath swallowed up wind, Her meeting -- who doth turn her back? None seeking her do weary themselves, In her month they find her.

asna montés habituada al desierto. Cuando buscas al macho, olfateas el viento, ¡y nadie puede controlar tu lujuria! Cuando buscas al macho, ¡a éste no le cuesta ningún trabajo encontrarte!

25 W ithhold thy foot from being unshod, And thy throat from thirst, And thou sayest, `It is incurable, No, for I have loved strangers, and after them I go.'

Pues ten cuidado. No andes descalza. No dejes que la sed te reseque la garganta. Pero tú respondes: “No hay caso; ¡ya no tengo remedio! He tenido amoríos con extraños, y tras ellos me iré.”

26 A s the shame of a thief when he is found, So put to shame have been the house of Israel, They, their kings, their heads, And their priests, and their prophets,

»Pero la casa de Israel tendrá que avergonzarse, y con ellos sus reyes, sus príncipes, sus sacerdotes y sus profetas, como se avergüenza el ladrón cuando es descubierto.

27 S aying to wood, `My father thou!' And to a stone, `Thou hast brought me forth,' For they turned unto me the back and not the face, And in the time of their vexation, They say, `Arise Thou, and save us.'

Porque a un pedazo de madera le dicen: “Tú eres mi padre”, y a una piedra: “Tú me has engendrado”. Porque me han dado la espalda, y no la cara. Pero cuando están en problemas, me dicen: “¡Levántate, y sálvanos!”

28 A nd where thy gods, that thou hast made to thyself? Let them arise, if they may save thee, In the time of thy vexation, For -- the number of thy cities have been thy gods, O Judah,

Dime, Judá: ¿dónde están esos dioses que te fabricaste? ¡Tienes tantos dioses como ciudades! ¡Pues que se levanten ellos, a ver si cuando estés en problemas te pueden salvar!

29 W hy do ye strive with Me? All of you have transgressed against Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

»¿Por qué entablan pleito conmigo? ¡Si todos ustedes han pecado contra mí! —Palabra del Señor.

30 I n vain I have smitten your sons, Instruction they have not accepted, Devoured hath your sword your prophets, As a destroying lion.

»En vano he azotado a los hijos de ustedes, pues no han asimilado el castigo. Y la espada de ustedes, como si fuera un león feroz, se devoró a los profetas.

31 O generation, see ye the word of Jehovah: A wilderness have I been to Israel? A land of thick darkness? Wherefore have My people said, `We mourned, We come not in again unto Thee.'

Ustedes, pueblo de Israel, ¡presten atención a mi palabra! ¿Acaso yo he sido para ustedes un desierto, o un país de oscuridad? ¿Por qué dicen ustedes: “Somos libres. Nunca más volveremos a ti”?

32 D oth a virgin forget her ornaments? A bride her bands? And My people have forgotten Me days without number.

¿Acaso la doncella se olvida de sus galas? ¿Acaso la novia se olvida de su vestido de bodas? Sin embargo, ¡mi pueblo se ha olvidado de mí infinidad de veces!

33 W hat -- dost thou make pleasing thy ways to seek love? Therefore even the wicked thou hast taught thy ways.

»¿Por qué te adornas cuando sales en busca de amoríos? ¡Hasta a las rameras les has enseñado tus malas artes!

34 A lso in thy skirts hath been found the blood of innocent needy souls, Not by digging have I found them, but upon all these.

¡Hasta en tu ropa puede verse la sangre de gente pobre e inocente! Y aunque nunca los viste cometer ningún delito, con todo declaras

35 A nd thou sayest, `Because I have been innocent, Surely turned back hath His anger from me?' Lo, I have been judged with thee, Because of thy saying, `I have not sinned.'

que eres inocente, y que mi ira se ha apartado de ti. Pues precisamente por declarar que no has pecado, voy a llevarte a juicio.

36 W hat? thou art very vile to repeat thy way, Even of Egypt thou art ashamed, As thou hast been ashamed of Asshur,

¿A qué vienen tantos cambios, tanta frivolidad? ¡Tanta vergüenza te hará pasar Egipto, como te la hizo pasar Asiria!

37 A lso from this thou goest out, And thy hands on thy head, For Jehovah hath kicked at thy confidences, And thou dost not give prosperity to them!

También de Egipto saldrás con las manos sobre la cabeza, porque el Señor ha rechazado a aquellos en los que confiabas. Con ellos no tendrás ningún éxito.
