Después, Pablo llegó a Derbe y a Listra. Allí había un discípulo llamado Timoteo, que era hijo de una judía cristiana y de padre griego.

2 w ho was well testified to by the brethren in Lystra and Iconium;

Los hermanos que estaban en Listra y en Iconio hablaban muy bien de él,

3 t his one did Paul wish to go forth with him, and having taken, he circumcised him, because of the Jews who are in those places, for they all knew his father -- that he was a Greek.

así que Pablo quiso que Timoteo lo acompañara. Para evitar problemas con los judíos que había en aquellos lugares, Pablo hizo que Timoteo se circuncidara, pues todos sabían que su padre era griego.

4 A nd as they were going on through the cities, they were delivering to them the decrees to keep, that have been judged by the apostles and the elders who in Jerusalem,

Cuando ellos pasaban por las ciudades, entregaban las reglas que los apóstoles y los ancianos en Jerusalén habían acordado que se pusieran en práctica.

5 t hen, indeed, were the assemblies established in the faith, and were abounding in number every day;

6 a nd having gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,

7 h aving gone toward Mysia, they were trying to go on toward Bithynia, and the Spirit did not suffer them,

8 a nd having passed by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

Entonces dejaron de lado a Misia y llegaron a Troas.

9 A nd a vision through the night appeared to Paul -- a certain man of Macedonia was standing, calling upon him, and saying, `Having passed through to Macedonia, help us;' --

Allí, una noche Pablo tuvo una visión, en la que veía ante él a un varón macedonio, que suplicante le decía: «Pasa a Macedonia, y ayúdanos.»

10 a nd when he saw the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go forth to Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord hath called us to preach good news to them,

11 h aving set sail, therefore, from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, on the morrow also to Neapolis,

12 t hence also to Philippi, which is a principal city of the part of Macedonia -- a colony. And we were in this city abiding certain days,

13 o n the sabbath-day also we went forth outside of the city, by a river, where there used to be prayer, and having sat down, we were speaking to the women who came together,

Un día de reposo salimos de la ciudad y llegamos al río, donde se hacía la oración; allí nos sentamos y trabamos conversación con las mujeres allí reunidas.

14 a nd a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was hearing, whose heart the Lord did open to attend to the things spoken by Paul;

Entre las que nos oían estaba una mujer llamada Lidia, que vendía telas de púrpura en la ciudad de Tiatira. Lidia adoraba a Dios, y el Señor tocó su corazón para que diera cabida a lo que Pablo decía.

15 a nd when she was baptized, and her household, she did call upon us, saying, `If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain;' and she constrained us.

Cuando ella y su familia fueron bautizadas, suplicante nos dijo: «Si ustedes consideran que soy fiel al Señor, vengan a mi casa y hospédense allí.» Y nos sentimos obligados a quedarnos allí.

16 A nd it came to pass in our going on to prayer, a certain maid, having a spirit of Python, did meet us, who brought much employment to her masters by soothsaying,

Pero sucedió que, mientras nos dirigíamos al lugar de oración, una joven adivina salió a nuestro encuentro; por su capacidad de adivinación, ella era para sus amos una fuente de muchas ganancias.

17 s he having followed Paul and us, was crying, saying, `These men are servants of the Most High God, who declare to us a way of salvation;'

La joven venía tras nosotros, y a voz en cuello gritaba: «Estos hombres son siervos del Dios Altísimo, y les anuncian el camino de salvación.»

18 a nd this she was doing for many days, but Paul having been grieved, and having turned, said to the spirit, `I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come forth from her;' and it came forth the same hour.

Esto lo repitió durante muchos días; pero Pablo se molestó mucho y, finalmente, se dio vuelta y le dijo a ese espíritu: «¡En el nombre de Jesucristo, te ordeno que salgas de ella!» Y al instante el espíritu la abandonó.

19 A nd her masters having seen that the hope of their employment was gone, having caught Paul and Silas, drew to the market-place, unto the rulers,

Pero al ver sus amos que iban a perder sus ganancias, aprehendieron a Pablo y a Silas, y los presentaron ante las autoridades, en la plaza pública.

20 a nd having brought them to the magistrates, they said, `These men do exceedingly trouble our city, being Jews;

Allí, ante los magistrados, dijeron: «Estos judíos andan alborotando a nuestra ciudad,

21 a nd they proclaim customs that are not lawful for us to receive nor to do, being Romans.'

y enseñan costumbres que nosotros, como romanos, no podemos aceptar ni practicar.»

22 A nd the multitude rose up together against them, and the magistrates having torn their garments from them, were commanding to beat with rods,

La gente se agolpó contra ellos; los magistrados les rasgaron las ropas, y ordenaron que se les azotara con varas.

23 m any blows also having laid upon them, they cast them to prison, having given charge to the jailor to keep them safely,

Después de darles muchos azotes, los arrojaron en la cárcel y le ordenaron al carcelero que los mantuviera constantemente vigilados.

24 w ho such a charge having received, did put them to the inner prison, and their feet made fast in the stocks.

Al recibir esta orden, el carcelero los metió hasta el último calabozo, y les sujetó los pies en el cepo.

25 A nd at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were hearing them,

A la medianoche, Pablo y Silas oraban y cantaban himnos a Dios, mientras los presos los escuchaban.

26 a nd suddenly a great earthquake came, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, opened also presently were all the doors, and of all -- the bands were loosed;

De pronto hubo un terremoto, tan violento que los cimientos de la cárcel se estremecieron. Al instante se abrieron todas las puertas, y las cadenas de todos se soltaron.

27 a nd the jailor having come out of sleep, and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn a sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to be fled,

El carcelero despertó, y cuando vio abiertas las puertas de la cárcel, sacó su espada y quiso matarse, pues pensaba que los presos habían huido.

28 a nd Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, `Thou mayest not do thyself any harm, for we are all here.'

Pero con fuerte voz Pablo le dijo: «¡No te hagas ningún daño, que todos estamos aquí!»

29 A nd, having asked for a light, he sprang in, and trembling he fell down before Paul and Silas,

Entonces el carcelero pidió una luz y, temblando de miedo, corrió hacia dentro y se echó a los pies de Pablo y de Silas;

30 a nd having brought them forth, said, `Sirs, what must I do -- that I may be saved?'

luego los sacó y les preguntó: «Señores, ¿qué debo hacer para salvarme?»

31 a nd they said, `Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved -- thou and thy house;'

Ellos le dijeron: «Cree en el Señor Jesucristo, y se salvarán tú y tu familia.»

32 a nd they spake to him the word of the Lord, and to all those in his household;

Y les hablaron de la palabra del Señor a él y a toda su familia.

33 a nd having taken them, in that hour of the night, he did bathe from the blows, and was baptized, himself and all his presently,

A esas horas de la noche el carcelero los tomó y les lavó las heridas, y luego él y toda su familia fueron bautizados;

34 h aving brought them also into his house, he set food before, and was glad with all the household, he having believed in God.

después los llevó a su casa y les sirvió de comer, y él y toda su casa se alegraron mucho de haber creído en Dios.

35 A nd day having come, the magistrates sent the rod-bearers, saying, `Let those men go;'

Al día siguiente, los magistrados enviaron unos alguaciles a decirle: «Suelta a esos hombres.»

36 a nd the jailor told these words unto Paul -- `The magistrates have sent, that ye may be let go; now, therefore, having gone forth go on in peace;'

El carcelero le dijo a Pablo: «Los magistrados mandan a decir que los deje libres; así que salgan y váyanse tranquilos.»

37 a nd Paul said to them, `Having beaten us publicly uncondemned -- men, Romans being -- they did cast to prison, and now privately do they cast us forth! why no! but having come themselves, let them bring us forth.'

Pero Pablo dijo: «Después de que nos azotaron públicamente, nos echaron en la cárcel sin una sentencia judicial, ¿ahora nos van a liberar en secreto? ¡De ninguna manera! Nosotros somos ciudadanos romanos. ¡Que vengan ellos mismos a sacarnos!»

38 A nd the rod-bearers told to the magistrates these sayings, and they were afraid, having heard that they are Romans,

Los alguaciles fueron a decir a los magistrados lo que Pablo había dicho; y éstos se asustaron al enterarse de que eran ciudadanos romanos.

39 a nd having come, they besought them, and having brought forth, they were asking to go forth from the city;

Entonces fueron a la cárcel, y con ruegos les pidieron que salieran y se fueran de la ciudad.

40 a nd they, having gone forth out of the prison, entered into Lydia, and having seen the brethren, they comforted them, and went forth.

Al salir de la cárcel, se dirigieron a la casa de Lidia y, luego de ver a los hermanos, los consolaron y se fueron.
