1 ` And these the judgments which thou dost set before them:

»Éstas son las leyes que les propondrás:

2 ` When thou buyest a Hebrew servant -- six years he doth serve, and in the seventh he goeth out as a freeman for nought;

»Si compras un esclavo hebreo, te servirá seis años; pero en el séptimo año quedará libre y sin tener que pagar nada.

3 i f by himself he cometh in, by himself he goeth out; if he owner of a wife, then his wife hath gone out with him;

»Si el esclavo llegó solo, solo se irá; si tenía mujer, se irán él y su mujer.

4 i f his lord give to him a wife, and she hath borne to him sons or daughters -- the wife and her children are her lord's, and he goeth out by himself.

»Si el amo le dio mujer al esclavo, y ella le da a éste hijos o hijas, la mujer y los hijos serán del amo, y el esclavo se irá solo.

5 ` And if the servant really say: I have loved my lord, my wife, and my sons -- I do not go out free;

»Si el esclavo dice: “Yo amo a mi señor, a mi mujer y a mis hijos, no quiero quedar libre”;

6 t hen hath his lord brought him nigh unto God, and hath brought him nigh unto the door, or unto the side-post, and his lord hath bored his ear with an awl, and he hath served him -- to the age.

entonces su amo lo llevará ante los jueces, lo pondrá junto a una puerta o poste, y le horadará la oreja con una lesna. Así el esclavo quedará para siempre a su servicio.

7 ` And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants;

»Si alguien vende a su hija como esclava, ésta no podrá quedar libre como los esclavos varones.

8 i f evil in the eyes of her lord, so that he hath not betrothed her, then he hath let her be ransomed; to a strange people he hath not power to sell her, in his dealing treacherously with her.

»Si ella no le agrada a su amo, y el amo la rechaza y no la toma por esposa, se le permitirá ser rescatada, pero no podrá venderse a gente extraña.

9 ` And if to his son he betroth her, according to the right of daughters he doth to her.

»Si el amo entrega la esclava a su hijo por mujer, deberá ser tratada como se acostumbra tratar a las hijas.

10 ` If another he take for him, her food, her covering, and her habitation, he doth not withdraw;

»Si el amo toma a otra mujer por esposa, no podrá disminuir la alimentación ni el vestido ni los derechos conyugales de la primera.

11 a nd if these three he do not to her, then she hath gone out for nought, without money.

»Si el amo no cumple con ninguna de estas tres condiciones, la mujer quedará libre y sin tener que pagar nada. Leyes para los actos de violencia

12 ` He who smiteth a man so that he hath died, is certainly put to death;

»Si alguien hiere a otro y le hace morir, también morirá.

13 a s to him who hath not laid wait, and God hath brought to his hand, I have even set for thee a place whither he doth flee.

Pero si no era su intención matarlo, sino que Dios lo puso en sus manos, entonces yo te indicaré el lugar al que podrá huir.

14 ` And when a man doth presume against his neighbour to slay him with subtilty, from Mine altar thou dost take him to die.

»Si alguno se cree superior a su prójimo y lo mata con alevosía, lo apartarás de mi altar y también morirá.

15 ` And he who smiteth his father or his mother is certainly put to death.

»Si alguien mata a su padre o a su madre, también morirá.

16 ` And he who stealeth a man, and hath sold him, and he hath been found in his hand, is certainly put to death.

»Si alguien secuestra a una persona y la vende, o si esa persona es hallada en sus manos, también morirá.

17 ` And he who is reviling his father or his mother is certainly put to death.

Si alguien maldice a su padre o a su madre, también morirá.

18 ` And when men contend, and a man hath smitten his neighbour with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but hath fallen on the bed;

»Si algunos riñen, y uno hiere a su prójimo con una piedra o con el puño, y éste no muere pero cae en cama,

19 i f he rise, and hath gone up and down without on his staff, then hath the smiter been acquitted; only his cessation he giveth, and he is thoroughly healed.

si se levanta y sale apoyado en su bastón, entonces el que lo hirió quedará absuelto y solamente verá que lo curen y lo indemnizará por el tiempo que haya estado sin trabajar.

20 ` And when a man smiteth his man-servant or his handmaid, with a rod, and he hath died under his hand -- he is certainly avenged;

»Si un amo golpea con un palo a su esclavo o a su esclava, y por ese golpe él o ella llegan a morir, el amo será castigado.

21 o nly if he remain a day, or two days, he is not avenged, for he his money.

Pero si el esclavo o la esclava sobreviven uno o dos días, el amo no será castigado, porque ellos son de su propiedad.

22 ` And when men strive, and have smitten a pregnant woman, and her children have come out, and there is no mischief, he is certainly fined, as the husband of the woman doth lay upon him, and he hath given through the judges;

»Si algunos riñen, y en su riña lastiman a una mujer embarazada, y ésta llega a abortar, pero no muere, los rijosos serán penados según lo que el marido de la mujer les imponga y los jueces decidan.

23 a nd if there is mischief, then thou hast given life for life,

Pero en caso de muerte, se pagará vida por vida,

24 e ye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

ojo por ojo, diente por diente, mano por mano, pie por pie,

25 b urning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

quemadura por quemadura, herida por herida, golpe por golpe. Leyes para amos y dueños

26 ` And when a man smiteth the eye of his man-servant, or the eye of his handmaid, and hath destroyed it, as a freeman he doth send him away for his eye;

»Si alguno hiere a su esclavo o a su esclava en el ojo, y se lo daña, por causa de su ojo le dará la libertad.

27 a nd if a tooth of his man-servant or a tooth of his handmaid he knock out, as a freeman he doth send him away for his tooth.

»Si alguien le rompe un diente a su esclavo o a su esclava, por causa del diente le dará la libertad.

28 ` And when an ox doth gore man or woman, and they have died, the ox is certainly stoned, and his flesh is not eaten, and the owner of the ox acquitted;

»Si un buey cornea a algún hombre o mujer, y él o ella mueren por causa de la cornada, el buey será apedreado, y no se comerá su carne, pero el dueño del buey quedará absuelto.

29 a nd if the ox is accustomed to gore heretofore, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he doth not watch it, and it hath put to death a man or woman, the ox is stoned, and its owner also is put to death.

»Si desde tiempo atrás el buey acostumbraba cornear, y llega a matar a algún hombre o mujer, será apedreado; y si su dueño sabía que el buey acostumbraba cornear pero no lo mantenía sujeto, también morirá.

30 ` If atonement is laid upon him, then he hath given the ransom of his life, according to all that is laid upon him;

»Si como pena se le impone pagar rescate por su persona, tendrá que pagar el rescate que se le imponga.

31 w hether it gore a son or gore a daughter, according to this judgment it is done to him.

La misma pena se le impondrá si el buey cornea a un muchacho o a una muchacha.

32 ` If the ox gore a man-servant or a handmaid, thirty silver shekels he doth give to their lord, and the ox is stoned.

Pero si el buey cornea a un esclavo o a una esclava, entonces el dueño pagará treinta monedas de plata y el buey será apedreado.

33 ` And when a man doth open a pit, or when a man doth dig a pit, and doth not cover it, and an ox or ass hath fallen thither, --

»Si alguien abre un pozo, o cava una cisterna, y no la tapa, y ahí se cae un buey o un asno,

34 t he owner of the pit doth repay, money he doth give back to its owner, and the dead is his.

el que cavó la cisterna indemnizará al dueño del animal por el daño causado, pero podrá quedarse con el animal muerto.

35 ` And when a man's ox doth smite the ox of his neighbour, and it hath died, then they have sold the living ox, and halved its money, and also the dead one they do halve;

»Si el buey de alguien hiere al buey de su prójimo y lo mata, se venderá el buey vivo y los dueños se repartirán el dinero de la venta, y también se repartirán el buey muerto.

36 o r, it hath been known that the ox is accustomed to gore heretofore, and its owner doth not watch it, he certainly repayeth ox for ox, and the dead is his.

Pero si desde tiempo atrás se sabía que el buey acostumbraba cornear, y su dueño no lo mantenía sujeto, entonces éste repondrá el muerto buey con un buey vivo, pero podrá quedarse con el buey muerto.
