1 A nd these the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;

Éstos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron con Jacob en Egipto. Cada uno de ellos entró con su familia:

2 R euben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá,

3 I ssachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín,

4 D an, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

5 A nd all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.

Todos los hijos que le nacieron a Jacob fueron setenta. José ya estaba en Egipto.

6 A nd Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;

Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos y toda aquella generación,

7 a nd the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.

y los hijos de Israel se reprodujeron y se multiplicaron, y aumentaron bastante en número y en fuerza, y el país se saturó de ellos.

8 A nd there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,

Mientras tanto, en Egipto surgió un nuevo rey que no había conocido a José, y le dijo a su pueblo:

9 a nd he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel more numerous and mighty than we;

«Como pueden ver, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

10 g ive help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'

Así que debemos tratarlos con mucha sabiduría para que no sigan multiplicándose. Puede suceder que, en caso de guerra, ellos también se alíen con nuestros enemigos y peleen contra nosotros, y se vayan del país.»

11 A nd they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;

Entonces los egipcios pusieron sobre los israelitas a comisarios de tributos para que los afligieran con sus trabajos. Así los israelitas construyeron para el faraón Pitón y Ramesés, que eran ciudades de almacenaje.

12 a nd as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;

Pero mientras más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban y crecían, de modo que los egipcios sentían temor de los hijos de Israel.

13 a nd the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,

Por eso los egipcios sometieron a los hijos de Israel a una cruel servidumbre.

14 a nd make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every of service in the field; all their service in which they have served with rigour.

Les amargaron la vida y sin piedad los obligaron a hacer barro y ladrillos, y todas las labores del campo y toda clase de trabajos pesados.

15 A nd the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),

Además, el rey de Egipto habló con Sifra y Fúa, que eran las parteras de las hebreas, y les dijo:

16 a nd saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

«Cuando ustedes ayuden a las hebreas en sus partos, fíjense en el sexo. Si es niño, mátenlo; si es niña, déjenla vivir.»

17 A nd the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;

Pero las parteras temieron a Dios, y no hicieron lo que el rey de Egipto les mandó, sino que les salvaron la vida a los niños.

18 a nd the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'

Entonces el rey de Egipto mandó a llamar a las parteras, y les dijo: «¿Por qué han hecho esto de salvarles la vida a los niños?»

19 A nd the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women not as the Egyptian women, for they lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!'

Y las parteras le respondieron: «Es que las hebreas no son como las egipcias. Son mujeres robustas, y dan a luz antes de que la partera llegue a ayudarlas.»

20 A nd God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;

Y Dios trató bien a las parteras, y el pueblo llegó a ser cada vez más numeroso y más fuerte.

21 a nd it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;

Y como las parteras tuvieron temor de Dios, él hizo que sus familias prosperaran.

22 a nd Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'

Pero el faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo: «Echen al río a todos los niños que nazcan, pero dejen con vida a todas las niñas.»
