1 A nd yet, I pray thee, O Job, Hear my speech and all my words give ear.

2 L o, I pray thee, I have opened my mouth, My tongue hath spoken in the palate.

Abriré mi labios y diré lo que tengo ya en la punta de la lengua.

3 O f the uprightness of my heart my sayings, And knowledge have my lips clearly spoken.

Mis palabras brotan de un corazón sincero; lo que me oigas decir no lleva mala intención.

4 T he Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Mighty doth quicken me.

El espíritu de Dios me ha creado; el soplo del Todopoderoso me dio vida.

5 I f thou art able -- answer me, Set in array before me -- station thyself.

¡Veamos si puedes responderme! ¡Ordena tus palabras, y enfréntate a mí!

6 L o, I, according to thy word, for God, From the clay I -- I also, have been formed.

¡Por Dios, yo soy igual que tú! ¡También yo fui formado del barro!

7 L o, my terror doth not frighten thee, And my burden on thee is not heavy.

Ante mí, nada tienes que temer, pues no descargaré mi puño sobre ti.

8 S urely -- thou hast said in mine ears, And the sounds of words I hear:

»Con mis oídos te oí decir, o al menos esto fue lo que escuché:

9 ` Pure I, without transgression, Innocent I, and I have no iniquity.

“Yo estoy limpio, y en mí no hay pecado; soy inocente, y en mí no hay maldad.

10 L o, occasions against me He doth find, He doth reckon me for an enemy to Him,

¡Es Dios quien busca de qué acusarme! ¡Es Dios quien me tiene por su enemigo!

11 H e doth put in the stocks my feet, He doth watch all my paths.'

¡Me ha puesto grilletes en los pies, y me vigila por dondequiera que voy!”

12 L o, this thou hast not been righteous, I answer thee, that greater is God than man.

»Debo decirte que no hablas con justicia; Dios es más que el ser humano.

13 W herefore against Him hast thou striven, When all His matters He answereth not?

¿Por qué te empeñas en contender con él? ¡Dios no tiene por qué responderte!

14 F or once doth God speak, and twice, (He doth not behold it.)

Él nos habla de muchas maneras, pero nosotros nunca entendemos.

15 I n a dream -- a vision of night, In the falling of deep sleep on men, In slumberings on a bed.

Nos habla en sueños, en visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño nos vence y nos dormimos;

16 T hen He uncovereth the ear of men, And for their instruction sealeth:

entonces nos habla al oído, y nos indica lo que debemos hacer,

17 T o turn aside man doing, And pride from man He concealeth.

para que nos apartemos del mal y dejemos de lado la soberbia;

18 H e keepeth back his soul from corruption, And his life from passing away by a dart.

para que nos libremos de la tumba o de sufrir una muerte violenta.

19 A nd he hath been reproved With pain on his bed, And the strife of his bones enduring.

»Dios nos corrige con enfermedades, y con fuertes dolores de huesos;

20 A nd his life hath nauseated bread, And his soul desirable food.

¡hasta llegamos a aborrecer la comida, y por deliciosa que sea, no se nos antoja!

21 H is flesh is consumed from being seen, And high are his bones, they were not seen!

El cuerpo se nos va enjutando, hasta dejar ver todos nuestros huesos.

22 A nd draw near to the pit doth his soul, And his life to those causing death.

Cuando nos vemos al borde del sepulcro, y llegamos a las puertas de la muerte,

23 I f there is by him a messenger, An interpreter -- one of a thousand, To declare for man his uprightness:

a veces viene un ángel bondadoso, uno entre mil, que intercede por nosotros y da a conocer nuestras buenas acciones;

24 T hen He doth favour him and saith, `Ransom him from going down to the pit, I have found an atonement.'

se compadece de nosotros y le dice a Dios: “¡No lo dejes caer en el sepulcro que ya he encontrado cómo rescatarlo!”

25 F resher his flesh than a child's, He returneth to the days of his youth.

Su cuerpo recobra la lozanía de un niño, y vuelve a regocijarse como en su juventud.

26 H e maketh supplication unto God, And He accepteth him. And he seeth His face with shouting, And He returneth to man His righteousness.

Entonces ora a Dios, y en su bondad Dios lo deja ver su rostro, le devuelve la alegría, y lo restaura a su estado anterior:

27 H e looketh on men, and saith, `I sinned, And uprightness I have perverted, And it hath not been profitable to me.

entonces canta ante sus semejantes, y reconoce su pecado y su injusticia, y admite que no sacó ningún provecho;

28 H e hath ransomed my soul From going over into the pit, And my life on the light looketh.'

entonces Dios lo libra del sepulcro y le hace volver a ver la luz.

29 L o, all these doth God work, Twice -- thrice with man,

»Con tal bondad nos trata Dios cuantas veces sea necesario,

30 T o bring back his soul from the pit, To be enlightened with the light of the living.

para librarnos de caer en el sepulcro y alumbrarnos con la luz de la vida.

31 A ttend, O Job, hearken to me, Keep silent, and I -- I do speak.

Escúchame, Job; préstame atención. Guarda silencio, que tengo que hablarte.

32 I f there are words -- answer me, Speak, for I have a desire to justify thee.

Si tienes algo que decir, respóndeme, que yo quiero demostrar tu inocencia.

33 I f there are not -- hearken thou to me, Keep silent, and I teach thee wisdom.

De lo contrario, escúchame tú a mí; calla y déjame enseñarte a ser sabio.»
