1 A n Instruction of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law, Incline your ear to sayings of my mouth.

Pueblo mío, escucha mis enseñanzas; inclina tu oído a las palabras de mi boca.

2 I open with a simile my mouth, I bring forth hidden things of old,

Abriré mi boca y diré proverbios; hablaré de los misterios de tiempos pasados,

3 T hat we have heard and do know, And our fathers have recounted to us.

de cosas que ya hemos oído y que conocemos porque nuestros padres nos las contaron.

4 W e do not hide from their sons, To a later generation recounting praises of Jehovah, And His strength, and His wonders that He hath done.

No las mantendremos ocultas a nuestros hijos, sino que diremos a las generaciones futuras que el Señor es digno de alabanza por su poder y por sus hechos portentosos.

5 A nd He raiseth up a testimony in Jacob, And a law hath placed in Israel, That He commanded our fathers, To make them known to their sons.

El Señor estableció su ley para Jacob; le entregó sus enseñanzas a Israel, y ordenó a nuestros padres que nos las enseñaran,

6 S o that a later generation doth know, Sons who are born, do rise and recount to their sons,

para que las conociera la generación futura, los hijos que nos habrían de nacer, y ellos a su vez las contaran a sus hijos,

7 A nd place in God their confidence, And forget not the doings of God, But keep His commands.

para que pusieran en Dios su confianza y no se olvidaran de sus grandes hechos; para que obedecieran sus mandamientos,

8 A nd they are not like their fathers, A generation apostate and rebellious, A generation! it hath not prepared its heart, Nor stedfast with God its spirit.

y no fueran como sus padres, gente rebelde y desobediente, gente que no entrega a Dios su corazón, y cuyo espíritu no le es fiel.

9 S ons of Ephraim -- armed bearers of bow, Have turned in a day of conflict.

Los efraimitas, arqueros armados, volvieron la espalda en el día de la batalla.

10 T hey have not kept the covenant of God, And in His law they have refused to walk,

No cumplieron con el pacto de Dios, ni quisieron ceñirse a su ley;

11 A nd they forget His doings, And His wonders that He shewed them.

más bien, se olvidaron de sus obras, y de las maravillas que les había mostrado.

12 B efore their fathers He hath done wonders, In the land of Egypt -- the field of Zoan.

Allá en Egipto, en el campo de Soán, Dios hizo maravillas a los ojos de sus padres.

13 H e cleft a sea, and causeth them to pass over, Yea, He causeth waters to stand as a heap.

Partió el mar en dos, y los hizo pasar, conteniendo las aguas como dos murallas.

14 A nd leadeth them with a cloud by day, And all the night with a light of fire.

Durante el día los guiaba con una nube, y durante la noche con un resplandor de fuego.

15 H e cleaveth rocks in a wilderness, And giveth drink -- as the great deep.

En el desierto hendió las peñas, y les dio a beber agua de los grandes abismos:

16 A nd bringeth out streams from a rock, And causeth waters to come down as rivers.

¡de la peña hizo brotar corrientes, y las aguas fluyeron como ríos!

17 A nd they add still to sin against Him, To provoke the Most High in the dry place.

Pero ellos volvieron a pecar contra Dios; en el desierto se rebelaron contra el Altísimo.

18 A nd they try God in their heart, To ask food for their lust.

Decidieron poner a prueba a Dios y pidieron comida a su antojo.

19 A nd they speak against God -- they said: `Is God able to array a table in a wilderness?'

Hablaron en contra de Dios, y dijeron: «¿Podrá Dios tendernos una mesa en el desierto?

20 L o, He hath smitten a rock, And waters flow, yea, streams overflow. `Also -- bread He able to give? Doth He prepare flesh for His people?'

Hemos visto que hirió la peña, y que brotaron aguas, y que en torrentes inundaron la tierra, ¿pero podrá también darnos pan? ¿Podrá darle carne a su pueblo?»

21 T herefore hath Jehovah heard, And He sheweth Himself wroth, And fire hath been kindled against Jacob, And anger also hath gone up against Israel,

Cuando el Señor oyó esto, se indignó, y su furor se encendió contra Jacob, como un fuego; su furor se encendió contra Israel,

22 F or they have not believed in God, Nor have they trusted in His salvation.

porque no tuvieron fe en Dios, ni confiaron en que él podía salvarlos.

23 A nd He commandeth clouds from above, Yea, doors of the heavens He hath opened.

Sin embargo, dio órdenes a las nubes, y abrió las compuertas de los cielos,

24 A nd He raineth on them manna to eat, Yea, corn of heaven He hath given to them.

y como lluvia dejó caer sobre ellos el maná; ¡les dio a comer el trigo de los cielos!

25 F ood of the mighty hath each eaten, Venison He sent to them to satiety.

¡Los mortales comieron pan angelical! ¡Dios les envió comida hasta saciarlos!

26 H e causeth an east wind to journey in the heavens, And leadeth by His strength a south wind,

Cambió la dirección del viento del este, y con su poder hizo venir el viento del sur,

27 A nd He raineth on them flesh as dust, And as sand of the seas -- winged fowl,

y cayó sobre ellos carne como lluvia; ¡llovieron tantas aves como arena hay en el mar!

28 A nd causeth to fall in the midst of His camp, Round about His tabernacles.

Dios las dejó caer en el campamento, y en los alrededores de sus tiendas,

29 A nd they eat, and are greatly satisfied, And their desire He bringeth to them.

y ellos comieron y quedaron saciados, pues Dios satisfizo su apetito.

30 T hey have not been estranged from their desire, Yet their food in their mouth,

Pero aun no habían calmado su hambre; aún tenían la comida en la boca,

31 A nd the anger of God hath gone up against them, And He slayeth among their fat ones, And youths of Israel He caused to bend.

cuando el furor de Dios vino sobre ellos y acabó con sus hombres más robustos; ¡Dios derribó a los mejores israelitas!

32 W ith all this they have sinned again, And have not believed in His wonders.

A pesar de todo, ellos siguieron pecando y no dieron crédito a sus grandes hechos.

33 A nd He consumeth in vanity their days, And their years in trouble.

Por eso Dios puso fin a sus días, ¡y en un soplo les quitó la vida!

34 I f He slew them, then they sought Him, And turned back, and sought God earnestly,

Si Dios los hacía morir, ellos lo buscaban y con gran diligencia se volvían a él;

35 A nd they remember that God their rock, And God Most High their redeemer.

¡se acordaban de que Dios era su refugio, de que el Dios Altísimo era su redentor!

36 A nd -- they deceive Him with their mouth, And with their tongue do lie to Him,

Pero con los labios lo adulaban, y con la lengua le mentían.

37 A nd their heart hath not been right with Him, And they have not been stedfast in His covenant.

En el fondo, nunca fueron rectos con él, ni se mantuvieron fieles a su pacto.

38 A nd He -- the Merciful One, Pardoneth iniquity, and destroyeth not, And hath often turned back His anger, And waketh not up all His fury.

Dios, en su bondad, les perdonaba su maldad; más de una vez contuvo su enojo, calmó su ira y no los destruyó.

39 A nd He remembereth that they flesh, A wind going on -- and it returneth not.

Se acordó de que eran mortales, ¡un simple soplo que se va y no vuelve!

40 H ow often do they provoke Him in the wilderness, Grieve Him in the desolate place?

¡Cuántas veces lo desobedecieron en el desierto! ¡Cuántas veces lo hicieron enojar en el yermo!

41 Y ea, they turn back, and try God, And the Holy One of Israel have limited.

¡Una y otra vez ponían a prueba a Dios! ¡Provocaban al Santo de Israel!

42 T hey have not remembered His hand The day He ransomed them from the adversary.

No traían a la memoria su poder, ni el día en que él los libró de la angustia,

43 W hen He set His signs in Egypt, And His wonders in the field of Zoan,

cuando realizó en Egipto sus señales, y sus maravillas en el campo de Soán;

44 A nd He turneth to blood their streams, And their floods they drink not.

cuando convirtió en sangre sus ríos y sus corrientes, para que no bebieran.

45 H e sendeth among them the beetle, and it consumeth them, And the frog, and it destroyeth them,

Les mandó enjambres de moscas, que los devoraban, y también ranas, que los destruían;

46 A nd giveth to the caterpillar their increase, And their labour to the locust.

dejó que la oruga y la langosta destruyera el fruto de su trabajo.

47 H e destroyeth with hail their vine, And their sycamores with frost,

Con granizo destruyó sus viñas, y con escarcha acabó con sus higueras.

48 A nd delivereth up to the hail their beasts, And their cattle to the burning flames.

Con granizo hizo estragos en sus ganados, y con sus rayos acabó con sus animales.

49 H e sendeth on them the fury of His anger, Wrath, and indignation, and distress -- A discharge of evil messengers.

Descargó sobre ellos el ardor de su ira; los angustió con su enojo y su indignación, ¡con un ejército de ángeles destructores!

50 H e pondereth a path for His anger, He kept not back their soul from death, Yea, their life to the pestilence He delivered up.

Le abrió paso a su furor y no les salvó la vida, sino que los entregó a la muerte.

51 A nd He smiteth every first-born in Egypt, The first-fruit of the strong in tents of Ham.

En Egipto, en los campamentos de Cam, les quitó la vida a todos los primogénitos, a los primeros frutos de su vigor.

52 A nd causeth His people to journey as a flock, And guideth them as a drove in a wilderness,

Dios hizo que su pueblo saliera como ovejas, y como un rebaño los llevó por el desierto;

53 A nd He leadeth them confidently, And they have not been afraid, And their enemies hath the sea covered.

con mano segura los fue llevando, para que no tuvieran ningún temor, mientras que el mar cubrió a sus enemigos.

54 A nd He bringeth them in unto the border of His sanctuary, This mountain His right hand had got,

Y los trajo a las fronteras de su tierra santa, a este monte que ganó con su mano derecha.

55 A nd casteth out nations from before them, And causeth them to fall in the line of inheritance, And causeth the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents,

Expulsó a las naciones de la presencia de su pueblo, repartió en sorteo las tierras que les dio en propiedad, y permitió que las tribus de Israel se asentaran allí.

56 A nd they tempt and provoke God Most High, And His testimonies have not kept.

Pero ellos pusieron a prueba al Dios Altísimo; lo hicieron enojar y no obedecieron sus decretos.

57 A nd they turn back, And deal treacherously like their fathers, They have been turned like a deceitful bow,

Hicieron lo que sus padres, y se rebelaron contra él; ¡se torcieron como un arco engañoso!

58 A nd make Him angry with their high places, And with their graven images make Him zealous,

Lo hicieron enojar con sus lugares altos; lo provocaron a celo con sus imágenes talladas.

59 G od hath heard, and sheweth Himself wroth. And kicketh exceedingly against Israel.

Cuando Dios lo supo, se enojó y rechazó por completo a Israel.

60 A nd He leaveth the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,

Se alejó del tabernáculo de Silo, de su lugar de residencia terrenal,

61 A nd He giveth His strength to captivity, And His beauty into the hand of an adversary,

y dejó caer en manos del enemigo el símbolo de su gloria y su poder.

62 A nd delivereth up to the sword His people, And with His inheritance shewed Himself angry.

Fue tanto su enojo contra su pueblo que los dejó caer a filo de espada.

63 H is young men hath fire consumed, And His virgins have not been praised.

Sus jóvenes fueron devorados por el fuego; sus doncellas no llegaron a oír cantos nupciales.

64 H is priests by the sword have fallen, And their widows weep not.

Sus sacerdotes cayeron a filo de espada, y sus viudas no lamentaron su muerte.

65 A nd the Lord waketh as a sleeper, As a mighty one crying aloud from wine.

Pero el Señor despertó como de un sueño, y gritando como un guerrero que ha tomado vino,

66 A nd He smiteth His adversaries backward, A reproach age-during He hath put on them,

hirió a sus enemigos y los puso en fuga; ¡los dejó avergonzados para siempre!

67 A nd He kicketh against the tent of Joseph, And on the tribe of Ephraim hath not fixed.

Desechó los campamentos de José, y no escogió a la tribu de Efraín,

68 A nd He chooseth the tribe of Judah, With mount Zion that He loved,

sino que prefirió a la tribu de Judá y al monte Sión, que tanto ama.

69 A nd buildeth His sanctuary as a high place, Like the earth, He founded it to the age.

Edificó su santuario semejante a las alturas, y semejante a la tierra, que afirmó para siempre.

70 A nd He fixeth on David His servant, And taketh him from the folds of a flock,

Eligió a su siervo David, al que tomó de los rebaños de ovejas;

71 F rom behind suckling ones He hath brought him in, To rule over Jacob His people, And over Israel His inheritance.

David cuidaba a las ovejas recién paridas, pero Dios lo puso a cuidar de su pueblo Israel, de Jacob, que es su heredad.

72 A nd he ruleth them according to the integrity of his heart, And by the skilfulness of his hands leadeth them!

Y David cuidó de ellos con todo el corazón; con gran pericia los guió como a un rebaño.
