1 A nd it cometh to pass, in the days of the judging of the judges, that there is a famine in the land, and there goeth a man from Beth-Lehem-Judah to sojourn in the fields of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

En los días en que los jueces gobernaban en Israel, hubo mucha hambre en la tierra, y un hombre de Belén de Judá emigró a los campos de Moab, junto con su mujer y sus dos hijos.

2 A nd the name of the man Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites from Beth-Lehem-Judah; and they come into the fields of Moab, and are there.

Ese hombre se llamaba Elimelec, y su mujer, Noemí; sus hijos se llamaban Majlón y Quelión, y habían nacido en Efrata, de Belén de Judá. Cuando llegaron a los campos de Moab, se quedaron a vivir allí.

3 A nd Elimelech husband of Naomi dieth, and she is left, she and her two sons;

Pero murió Elimelec, marido de Noemí, y ella se quedó sola con sus dos hijos.

4 a nd they take to them wives, Moabitesses: the name of the one Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth; and they dwell there about ten years.

Más tarde, ellos se casaron con unas moabitas, una de las cuales se llamaba Orfa, y la otra Rut, y se quedaron a vivir en Moab durante unos diez años.

5 A nd they die also, both of them -- Mahlon and Chilion -- and the woman is left of her two children and of her husband.

Pero también murieron Majlón y Quelión, y Noemí se quedó desamparada, sin marido ni hijos.

6 A nd she riseth, she and her daughters-in-law, and turneth back from the fields of Moab, for she hath heard in the fields of Moab that God hath looked after His people, -- to give to them bread.

Cuando Noemí se enteró de que el Señor había bendecido a su pueblo y que el hambre había terminado, decidió abandonar Moab junto con sus nueras.

7 A nd she goeth out from the place where she hath been, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they go in the way to turn back unto the land of Judah.

Las tres mujeres salieron de donde habían vivido, y emprendieron el camino de vuelta a la tierra de Judá.

8 A nd Naomi saith to her two daughters-in-law, `Go, turn back, each to the house of her mother; Jehovah doth with you kindness as ye have done with the dead, and with me;

Pero Noemí les dijo a sus dos nueras: «Es mejor que regresen a la casa de su madre. Que el Señor las trate con misericordia, tal y como ustedes nos trataron a mis hijos y a mí.

9 J ehovah doth grant to you, and find ye rest each in the house of her husband;' and she kisseth them, and they lift up their voice and weep.

Que el Señor les conceda hallar reposo, cada una en casa de su propio marido.» Luego las despidió con un beso, pero ellas se pusieron a llorar a voz en cuello

10 A nd they say to her, `Surely with thee we go back to thy people.'

y le dijeron: «Las dos nos queremos ir contigo a tu pueblo.»

11 A nd Naomi saith, `Turn back, my daughters; why do ye go with me? are there yet to me sons in my bowels that they have been to you for husbands?

Pero Noemí respondió: «Regresen a su pueblo, hijas mías. No tiene caso que vengan conmigo, pues ya no tengo más hijos que puedan ser sus maridos.

12 T urn back, my daughters, go, for I am too aged to be to a husband; though I had said, There is for me hope, also, I have been to-night to a husband, and also I have borne sons:

¡Váyanse, hijas mías! Yo ya estoy vieja para tener marido. Y aun cuando abrigara esa esperanza, y esta noche estuviera con un hombre y volviera a tener hijos,

13 f or them do ye wait till that they grow up? for them do ye shut yourselves up, not to be to a husband? nay, my daughters, for more bitter to me than to you, for the hand of Jehovah hath gone out against me.'

¿habrían de quedarse ustedes sin casar, por causa de ellos? ¡No, hijas mías! Mi amargura es mayor que la de ustedes, porque el Señor se ha puesto en mi contra.»

14 A nd they lift up their voice, and weep again, and Orpah kisseth her mother-in-law, and Ruth hath cleaved to her.

Pero ellas seguían llorando a voz en cuello. Y Orfa se despidió de su suegra con un beso, pero Rut se quedó con ella.

15 A nd she saith, `Lo, thy sister-in-law hath turned back unto her people, and unto her god, turn thou back after thy sister-in-law.'

Entonces Noemí dijo: «Mira a tu cuñada. Ya regresa a su pueblo, con sus dioses. ¡Regrésate también tú!»

16 A nd Ruth saith, `Urge me not to leave thee -- to turn back from after thee; for whither thou goest I go, and where thou lodgest I lodge; thy people my people, and thy God my God.

Pero Rut le respondió: «¡No me pidas que te deje y me aparte de ti! A dondequiera que tú vayas, iré yo; dondequiera que tú vivas, viviré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo, y tu Dios será mi Dios.

17 W here thou diest I die, and there I am buried; thus doth Jehovah to me, and thus doth He add -- for death itself doth part between me and thee.'

Donde tú mueras, moriré yo, y allí quiero que me sepulten. Que el Señor me castigue, y más aún, si acaso llego a dejarte sola. ¡Sólo la muerte nos podrá separar!»

18 A nd she seeth that she is strengthening herself to go with her, and she ceaseth to speak unto her;

Y como Noemí vio que Rut estaba resuelta a ir con ella, no dijo más.

19 a nd they go both of them till their coming in to Beth-Lehem; and it cometh to pass at their coming in to Beth-Lehem, that all the city is moved at them, and they say, `Is this Naomi?'

Y así, las dos siguieron caminando juntas hasta llegar a Belén. Y en cuanto entraron a la ciudad, hubo gran agitación entre toda la gente por causa de ellas, pues decían: «¿Qué, no es ésta Noemí?»

20 A nd she saith unto them, `Call me not Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly to me,

Pero ella les respondió: «Ya no me llamen Noemí. Llámenme Mara. Ciertamente, grande es la amargura que me ha hecho vivir el Todopoderoso.

21 I went out full, and empty hath Jehovah brought me back, why do ye call me Naomi, and Jehovah hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath done evil to me?'

Yo salí de aquí con las manos llenas, pero él me ha hecho volver con las manos vacías. ¿Por qué llamarme Noemí, si el Señor se ha puesto en mi contra, y mis aflicciones vienen del Todopoderoso?»

22 A nd Naomi turneth back, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, who hath turned back from the fields of Moab, and they have come in to Beth-Lehem at the commencement of barley-harvest.

Fue así como Noemí volvió de Moab, acompañada de Rut, su nuera moabita. Llegaron a Belén cuando comenzaba la cosecha de la cebada.
