1 A nd Job answereth and saith: --

Job tomó la palabra y dijo:

2 T ruly -- ye the people, And with you doth wisdom die.

«¡No hay duda! ¡Ustedes son la voz del pueblo! ¡Cuando ustedes mueran, morirá la sabiduría!

3 I also have a heart like you, I am not fallen more than you, And with whom is there not like these?

Pero yo también tengo un poco de sesos, y no me siento inferior a ustedes. ¿Quién no sabe todo lo que han dicho?

4 A laughter to his friend I am: `He calleth to God, and He answereth him,' A laughter the perfect righteous one.

»Yo invocaba a Dios, y él me respondía; ¡pero ahora hasta mis amigos se burlan de mí! ¡Por ser honesto soy objeto de burlas!

5 A torch -- despised in the thoughts of the secure Is prepared for those sliding with the feet.

“El que está por caer, ¡que se caiga!” Eso piensan quienes se sienten seguros.

6 A t peace are the tents of spoilers, And those provoking God have confidence, He into whose hand God hath brought.

En esta vida los ladrones prosperan, Y se sienten seguros los que ofenden a Dios. ¡Creen que Dios mismo les ha dado todo!

7 A nd yet, ask, I pray thee, the beasts, and it doth shew thee, And a fowl of the heavens, And it doth declare to thee.

»Observa a los animales, y aprende de ellos; Mira a las aves en los cielos, y oye lo que te dicen.

8 O r talk to the earth, and it sheweth thee, And fishes of the sea recount to thee:

Habla con la tierra, para que te enseñe; hasta los peces te lo han de contar.

9 ` Who hath not known in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath done this?

¿Habrá entre éstos alguien que no sepa que todo esto lo hizo la mano del Señor?

10 I n whose hand the breath of every living thing, And the spirit of all flesh of man.'

La vida de todo ser está en sus manos; ¡él infunde vida a toda la humanidad!

11 D oth not the ear try words? And the palate taste food for itself?

»El oído distingue las palabras, el paladar reconoce los sabores,

12 W ith the very aged wisdom, And length of days understanding.

los ancianos poseen sabiduría, y una larga vida acumula entendimiento;

13 W ith Him wisdom and might, To him counsel and understanding.

pero la sabiduría y el poder son de Dios, y suya también la decisión inteligente.

14 L o, He breaketh down, and it is not built up, He shutteth against a man, And it is not opened.

Lo que Dios destruye, nadie lo reconstruye; a quien él encierra, nadie puede liberarlo;

15 L o, He keepeth in the waters, and they are dried up, And he sendeth them forth, And they overturn the land.

si él detiene las aguas, viene la sequía; si envía lluvias torrenciales, la tierra se inunda.

16 W ith Him strength and wisdom, His the deceived and deceiver.

Suyos son la sabiduría y el poder; suyos son los que yerran y los que hacen errar.

17 C ausing counsellors to go away a spoil, And judges He maketh foolish.

Él despoja de buen juicio a los consejeros, y entorpece el criterio de los jueces;

18 T he bands of kings He hath opened, And He bindeth a girdle on their loins.

deshace las cadenas de los tiranos, y los manda en cadena al cautiverio;

19 C ausing ministers to go away a spoil And strong ones He overthroweth.

despoja de su poder a los sacerdotes, y derriba del trono a los poderosos;

20 T urning aside the lip of the stedfast, And the reason of the aged He taketh away.

arrebata la palabra a los consejeros, y deja a los ancianos sin inteligencia;

21 P ouring contempt upon princes, And the girdle of the mighty He made feeble.

cubre de ignominia a los príncipes, y expone a la vergüenza a los poderosos;

22 R emoving deep things out of darkness, And He bringeth out to light death-shade.

saca a la luz las fuerza ocultas, y pone al descubierto las más densas tinieblas.

23 M agnifying the nations, and He destroyeth them, Spreading out the nations, and He quieteth them.

Por él las naciones prosperan o son destruidas; es él quien las dispersa o las vuelve a reunir;

24 T urning aside the heart Of the heads of the people of the land, And he causeth them to wander In vacancy -- no way!

él entorpece el juicio de los gobernantes, y los hace vagar sin rumbo por el desierto;

25 T hey feel darkness, and not light, He causeth them to wander as a drunkard.

y éstos caminan a tientas, como ciegos sin guía, y van dando traspiés, como todo borracho.
