1 A nd all the sons of Israel go out, and the company is assembled as one man, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, and the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah, at Mizpeh.

Como un solo hombre, todos los israelitas, desde Dan hasta Berseba y Galaad, se reunieron delante del Señor en Mispá.

2 A nd the chiefs of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, station themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen drawing sword.

Allí estaban presentes los jefes del pueblo y de todas las tribus de Israel. Del pueblo de Dios había cuatrocientos mil hombres de infantería, espada en mano.

3 A nd the sons of Benjamin hear that the sons of Israel have gone up to Mizpeh. And the sons of Israel say, `Speak ye, how hath this evil been?'

Las tribus de Benjamín, por su parte, supieron que las tribus de Israel se habían reunido en Mispá. Los israelitas le dijeron al levita: «Cuéntanos cómo tuvo lugar esta infamia.»

4 A nd the man, the Levite, husband of the woman who hath been murdered, answereth and saith, `Into Gibeah (which to Benjamin) I have come, I and my concubine, to lodge;

Y el levita, marido de la mujer muerta, les dijo: «Yo llegué a Gabaa de Benjamín con mi mujer, para pasar allí la noche.

5 a nd rise against me do the masters of Gibeah -- and they go round the house against me by night -- me they thought to slay, and my concubine they have humbled, and she dieth;

Pero en la noche, unos malvados de esa ciudad rodearon la casa con la intención de matarme, y a mi mujer la violaron tan cruelmente que la mataron.

6 a nd I lay hold on my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and send her into all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have done wickedness and folly in Israel;

Entonces yo la levanté, la corté en pedazos, y envié esos pedazos por todo el territorio israelita, para que supieran la maldad y el crimen cometido en Israel.

7 l o, ye all sons of Israel; give for you a word and counsel here.'

Puesto que todos ustedes son israelitas, háganme saber lo que piensan y qué me aconsejan.»

8 A nd all the people rise as one man, saying, `None of us doth go to his tent, and none of us doth turn aside to his house;

Como un solo hombre, todo el pueblo se levantó y dijo: «Ninguno de nosotros volverá a su campamento ni a su casa.

9 a nd now, this the thing which we do to Gibeah -- against it by lot!

Lo que vamos a hacer es atacar a Gabaa. Pero lo haremos por sorteo.

10 a nd we have taken ten men of a hundred, of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of a myriad, to receive provision for the people, to do, at their coming to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly which it hath done in Israel.'

De todas las tribus de Israel elegiremos diez de cada cien hombres, cien de cada mil, y mil de cada diez mil, los cuales se encargarán de llevar provisiones a los que irán contra los de Gabaa de Benjamín para darles su merecido por la infamia que han cometido.»

11 A nd every man of Israel is gathered unto the city, as one man -- companions.

Como un solo hombre, los israelitas se reunieron para atacar la ciudad, porque su sentimiento era el mismo.

12 A nd the tribes of Israel send men among all the tribes of Benjamin, saying, `What this evil which hath been among you?

Y enviaron mensajeros a toda la tribu de Benjamín, para preguntarles: «¿Por qué cometieron tal infamia?

13 A nd now, give up the men -- sons of worthlessness -- which in Gibeah, and we put them to death, and we put away evil from Israel.' And Benjamin have not been willing to hearken to the voice of their brethren, the sons of Israel;

Entréguennos a esos malvados que viven en Gabaa, para que los matemos. Así erradicaremos de Israel esa maldad.» Pero los de Benjamín no hicieron caso de sus hermanos israelitas,

14 a nd the sons of Benjamin are gathered out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle with the sons of Israel.

sino que de todas sus ciudades se juntaron en Gabaa para presentar batalla contra los israelitas.

15 A nd the sons of Benjamin number themselves on that day; out of the cities twenty and six thousand men drawing sword, apart from the inhabitants of Gibeah, numbered themselves, seven hundred chosen men;

Los benjaminitas contados en aquella ocasión fueron veintiséis mil guerreros armados, sin contar los setecientos soldados escogidos que vivían en Gabaa.

16 a mong all this people seven hundred chosen men, bound of their right hand, each of these slinging with a stone at the hair, and he doth not err.

Entre toda esa gente había setecientos guerreros selectos que eran zurdos. Era tal su puntería que podían lanzar una piedra con la honda y darle a un cabello sin fallar.

17 A nd the men of Israel numbered themselves, apart from Benjamin, four hundred thousand men, drawing sword, each of these a man of war.

Por su parte, los israelitas contaban con cuatrocientos mil hombres armados, sin contar a los benjaminitas.

18 A nd they rise and go up to Beth-El, and ask of God, and the sons of Israel say, `Who doth go up for us at the commencement to battle with the sons of Benjamin?' and Jehovah saith, `Judah -- at the commencement.'

Los israelitas se alistaron, pero antes fueron a la casa de Dios para consultarlo. Y le preguntaron: «¿Quién será el primero de nosotros en trabar combate con los benjaminitas?» Y el Señor respondió: «El primero será Judá.»

19 A nd the sons of Israel rise in the morning, and encamp against Gibeah,

Por la mañana, los israelitas se dispusieron a atacar la ciudad de Gabaa.

20 a nd the men of Israel go out to battle with Benjamin, and the men of Israel set themselves in array with them, battle against Gibeah,

Salieron en orden de batalla para combatir a los benjaminitas de Gabaa.

21 a nd the sons of Benjamin come out from Gibeah, and destroy in Israel on that day two and twenty thousand men -- to the earth.

Pero los benjaminitas también estaban preparados, y salieron de Gabaa a luchar, y ese día exterminaron a veintidós mil guerreros israelitas.

22 A nd the people, the men of Israel, strengthen themselves, and add to set the battle in array in the place where they arranged themselves on the first day.

Pero los israelitas no se desanimaron, sino que se reagruparon y presentaron batalla en el mismo lugar del primer día.

23 A nd the sons of Israel go up and weep before Jehovah till the evening, and ask of Jehovah, saying, `Do I add to draw nigh to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother?' And Jehovah saith, `Go up against him.'

Y es que antes, durante la noche, los israelitas habían ido a llorar delante del Señor y a consultarle si debían volver a pelear contra sus hermanos, los benjaminitas; y el Señor les había respondido que debían atacarlos.

24 A nd the sons of Israel draw near unto the sons of Benjamin on the second day,

Por eso, el segundo día los israelitas se enfrentaron a sus hermanos,

25 a nd Benjamin cometh out to meet them from Gibeah on the second day, and destroy among the sons of Israel again eighteen thousand men -- to the earth; all these are drawing sword.

pero los benjaminitas volvieron a salir de Gabaa, y una vez más mataron a dieciocho mil israelitas, todos ellos armados.

26 A nd all the sons of Israel go up, even all the people, and come in to Beth-El, and weep, and sit there before Jehovah, and fast on that day till the evening, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

Volvieron entonces los israelitas y todo el pueblo a la casa de Dios, y llorando se sentaron delante del Señor y ayunaron todo el día y hasta la noche, y le ofrecieron al Señor holocaustos y ofrendas de paz.

27 A nd the sons of Israel ask of Jehovah, -- and there the ark of the covenant of God in those days,

Luego, consultaron al Señor. (En esos días el arca del pacto de Dios estaba allí,

28 a nd Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, is standing before it in those days -- saying, `Do I add again to go out to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or do I cease?' And Jehovah saith, `Go up, for to-morrow I give him into thy hand.'

y el sacerdote Finés hijo de Eleazar, de la tribu de Aarón, oficiaba delante de ella.) Le dijeron: «¿Debemos seguir luchando contra nuestros hermanos, los benjaminitas, o es mejor que desistamos?» Y el Señor les respondió: «Vuelvan a luchar, que mañana los pondré en sus manos.»

29 A nd Israel setteth liers in wait against Gibeah, round about,

Entonces los israelitas pusieron emboscadas alrededor de la ciudad,

30 a nd the sons of Israel go up against the sons of Benjamin, on the third day, and arrange themselves against Gibeah, as time by time.

y al tercer día volvieron a presentar batalla contra los benjaminitas, frente a Gabaa, como lo habían hecho antes.

31 A nd the sons of Benjamin come out to meet the people; they have been drawn away out of the city, and begin to smite of the people -- wounded as time by time, in the highways (of which one is going up to Beth-El, and the other to Gibeah in the field), about thirty men of Israel.

También ese día los benjaminitas salieron al encuentro de los israelitas, y se alejaron de la ciudad; a algunos de ellos los hirieron en el campo y por los caminos que van de Betel a Gabaa, y ese día mataron a unos treinta israelitas.

32 A nd the sons of Benjamin say, `They are smitten before us as at the beginning;' but the sons of Israel said, `Let us flee, and draw them away out of the city, unto the highways.'

Los benjaminitas pensaban que habían vuelto a vencerlos, pero los israelitas habían hecho un plan, y dijeron: «Vamos a huir, para que se alejen de la ciudad y lleguen hasta los caminos.»

33 A nd all the men of Israel have risen from their place, and arrange themselves at Baal-Tamar, and the ambush of Israel is coming forth out of its place, out of the meadow of Gibeah.

Y de pronto todos los israelitas que estaban en Baal Tamar se levantaron en orden de batalla, y también salieron los que estaban emboscados en la pradera de Gabaa,

34 A nd they come in over against Gibeah -- ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel -- and the battle grievous, and they have not known that the evil is striking against them.

y la batalla arreció porque diez mil de los mejores guerreros israelitas arremetieron contra Gabaa, y los guerreros de Benjamín aún no sabían que su derrota estaba próxima.

35 A nd Jehovah smiteth Benjamin before Israel, and the sons of Israel destroy in Benjamin, on that day, twenty and five thousand, and a hundred men; all these drawing sword.

Ese día el Señor permitió que los israelitas derrotaran a los de Benjamín, y éstos mataron a veinticinco mil cien guerreros benjaminitas bien armados.

36 A nd the sons of Benjamin see that they have been smitten -- and the men of Israel give place to Benjamin, for they have trusted unto the ambush which they had set against Gibeah,

Los benjaminitas se dieron cuenta de que estaban siendo derrotados por los israelitas, pues aunque los israelitas parecían huir, seguían atacándolos, confiados en las emboscadas que tenían alrededor de la ciudad.

37 a nd the ambush have hasted, and push against Gibeah, and the ambush draweth itself out, and smiteth the whole of the city by the mouth of the sword.

De pronto, los que estaban emboscados salieron y se lanzaron contra Gabaa, matando a filo de espada a los habitantes de la ciudad.

38 A nd there was the appointed sign to the men of Israel with the ambush -- their causing to go up a great volume of smoke from the city.

Habían acordado que, cuando saliera una gran humareda de la ciudad, ésa sería la señal para los israelitas emboscados de que Gabaa había sido tomada.

39 A nd the men of Israel turn in battle, and Benjamin hath begun to smite the wounded among the men of Israel, about thirty men, for they said, `Surely they are utterly smitten before us, as the first battle;

Así que, cuando los israelitas huían, los benjaminitas hirieron y mataron como a treinta israelitas, y ya decían: «Los estamos derrotando, como en la primera batalla.»

40 a nd the volume hath begun to go up from the city -- a pillar of smoke -- and Benjamin turneth behind, and lo, gone up hath the perfection of the city toward the heavens.

Pero entonces la columna de humo comenzó a subir desde la ciudad, y los benjaminitas vieron cómo subía al cielo.

41 A nd the men of Israel have turned, and the men of Benjamin are troubled, for they have seen that the evil hath stricken against them --

Entonces los guerreros israelitas se dieron vuelta, y los benjaminitas se llenaron de temor, pues comprendieron que les había sobrevenido un desastre.

42 a nd they turn before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness, and the battle hath followed them; and those who from the city are destroying them in their midst;

Corrieron entonces hacia el desierto, de espaldas a los israelitas, pero la lucha los alcanzó porque los que salían de las ciudades los herían y los mataban.

43 t hey have compassed the Benjamites -- they have pursued them -- with ease they have trodden them down till over-against Gibeah, at the sun-rising.

Así quedaron cercados los benjaminitas, mientras eran perseguidos y derrotados desde Menujá hasta el oriente de Gabaa.

44 A nd there fall of Benjamin eighteen thousand men -- the whole of these men of valour;

Ese día cayeron muertos dieciocho mil guerreros benjaminitas.

45 a nd they turn and flee toward the wilderness, unto the rock of Rimmon; and they glean of them in the highways five thousand men, and follow after them unto Gidom, and smite of them two thousand men.

Una parte de ellos huyó al desierto, rumbo a la peña de Rimón, pero también fueron aniquilados otros cinco mil de ellos en los caminos; a otros los persiguieron hasta Gidom, matando a dos mil hombres más.

46 A nd all those falling of Benjamin are twenty and five thousand men drawing sword, on that day -- the whole of these men of valour;

En total, ese día murieron veinticinco mil guerreros benjaminitas bien armados.

47 a nd there turn and flee into the wilderness, unto the rock of Rimmon six hundred men, and they dwell in the rock Rimmon four months.

Otros seiscientos hombres huyeron al desierto, a la peña de Rimón, y allí se quedaron cuatro meses.

48 A nd the men of Israel have turned back unto the sons of Benjamin, and smite them by the mouth of the sword out of the city, -- men unto cattle, unto all that is found; also all the cities which are found they have sent into fire.

Luego los israelitas se volvieron contra los benjaminitas, y los hirieron a filo de espada, matando en las ciudades a hombres y bestias por igual, y a todo lo que hallaban. Finalmente, prendieron fuego a todas las ciudades que hallaron a su paso.
