1 T he word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah -- and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his force, and all kingdoms of the land of the dominion of his hand, and all the peoples are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all its cities -- saying:

La palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías cuando Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia y todo su ejército, y todos los reinos y pueblos de la tierra bajo su dominio, peleaban contra Jerusalén y contra todas sus ciudades. Le dijo:

2 ` Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel: Go, and thou hast spoken unto Zedekiah king of Judah, and hast said unto him, Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he hath burned it with fire,

«Así ha dicho el Señor Dios de Israel: Ve y habla con Sedequías rey de Judá, y dile de mi parte: Yo, el Señor, voy a entregarle esta ciudad al rey de Babilonia, y él le prenderá fuego.

3 a nd thou, thou dost not escape out of his hand, for thou art certainly caught, and into his hand thou art given, and thine eyes see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth with thy mouth speaketh, and Babylon thou enterest.

Tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que serás apresado y puesto en sus manos. Tendrás que enfrentarte al rey de Babilonia y hablarás con él cara a cara, y serás llevado a Babilonia.

4 ` Only, hear a word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah, Thus said Jehovah unto thee: Thou dost not die by sword,

Sin embargo, Sedequías rey de Judá, oye mi palabra: Yo, el Señor, te hago saber que no morirás a filo de espada.

5 i n peace thou diest, and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings who have been before thee, so they make a burning for thee; and Ah, lord, they lament for thee, for the word I have spoken -- an affirmation of Jehovah.'

Tendrás una muerte tranquila, y se quemarán especias por ti, así como antes se quemaron por tus padres, los reyes que te antecedieron. Se guardará luto por ti, y se dirá “¡Ay, señor!”, porque así lo he dicho.» —Palabra del Señor.

6 A nd Jeremiah the prophet speaketh unto Zedekiah king of Judah all these words in Jerusalem,

El profeta Jeremías fue a Jerusalén y le repitió todas estas palabras a Sedequías rey de Judá.

7 a nd the forces of the king of Babylon are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that are left -- against Lachish, and against Azekah, for these have been left among the cities of Judah, cities of fortresses.

El ejército del rey de Babilonia se encontraba atacando a Jerusalén, Laquis y Azeca, porque de todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá sólo éstas habían quedado. Violación del pacto de libertar a los siervos hebreos

8 T he word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after the making by the king Zedekiah of a covenant with all the people who in Jerusalem, to proclaim to them liberty,

La palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías después de que Sedequías hizo un pacto con todo el pueblo en Jerusalén, para dejarlos en libertad

9 t o send out each his man-servant, and each his maid-servant -- the Hebrew and the Hebrewess -- free, so as not to lay service on them, any on a Jew his brother;

y que cada uno dejara libre a sus compatriotas hebreos, para que no hubiera siervos ni siervas israelitas.

10 a nd hearken do all the heads, and all the people who have come in to the covenant to send forth each his man-servant and each his maid-servant free, so as not to lay service on them any more, yea, they hearken, and send them away;

Cuando se enteraron de esto todos los príncipes, y todo el pueblo que había convenido en el pacto de dejar cada uno libre a su siervo y a su sierva, y de no tenerlos más como siervos, obedecieron y los dejaron en libertad.

11 a nd they turn afterwards, and cause the men-servants and the maid-servants to return, whom they had sent forth free, and they subdue them for men-servants and for maid-servants.

Pero después cambiaron de parecer y volvieron a tomar como siervos y siervas a los que antes habían dejado libres, y los obligaron a servirles.

12 A nd there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying:

Entonces la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías, y le dijo:

13 ` Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I made a covenant with your fathers in the day of My bringing them forth from the land of Egypt, from a house of servants, saying,

«Así dice el Señor y Dios de Israel: Cuando yo saqué a sus padres de Egipto, donde eran esclavos, hice un pacto con ellos. Les dije:

14 A t the end of seven years ye do send forth each his brother, the Hebrew, who is sold to thee, and hath served thee six years, yea, thou hast sent him forth free from thee: and your fathers hearkened not unto Me, nor inclined their ear.

Al cabo de siete años, cada uno de ustedes dejará en libertad a su hermano hebreo que le haya sido vendido. Le servirá seis años, y después de ese tiempo lo dejará en libertad. Pero los padres de ustedes no me hicieron caso ni me prestaron atención.

15 ` And ye turn back, ye to-day, and ye do that which is right in Mine eyes, to proclaim liberty each to his neighbour, and ye make a covenant before Me in the house over which My name is called.

Sin embargo, hoy ustedes se habían vuelto a mí y habían hecho lo recto delante de mis ojos, al anunciar cada uno libertad a su prójimo. Habían hecho un pacto en mi presencia, en la casa donde se invoca mi nombre.

16 A nd -- ye turn back, and pollute My name, and ye cause each his man-servant and each his maid-servant, whom he had sent forth free, (at their pleasure,) to return, and ye subdue them to be to you for men-servants and for maid-servants.

Pero al cambiar de parecer han profanado mi nombre. Cada uno de ustedes ha vuelto a tomar a sus siervos y siervas, que habían dejado en libertad, y una vez más los han hecho sus esclavos.

17 ` Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Ye have not hearkened unto Me to proclaim freedom, each to his brother, and each to his neighbour; lo, I am proclaiming to you liberty -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- unto the sword, unto the pestilence, and unto the famine, and I have given you for a trembling to all kingdoms of the earth.

Por eso, yo, el Señor, declaro: Como ustedes no me han obedecido para promulgar cada uno la libertad de su hermano y compañero, ahora yo voy a promulgar la libertad de la espada, la peste y el hambre. ¡Voy a hacer que todos los reinos de la tierra se horroricen al verlos! —Palabra del Señor.

18 ` And I have given the men who are transgressing My covenant, who have not established the words of the covenant that they have made before Me, by the calf, that they have cut in two, and pass through between its pieces --

»A los que transgredieron mi pacto y no cumplieron sus términos, los cuales pactaron en mi presencia, los voy a partir en dos, del mismo modo que se partió en dos el becerro con el que se selló el pacto. Voy a partir en dos

19 h eads of Judah, and heads of Jerusalem, the officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land those passing through between the pieces of the calf --

a los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, a los oficiales y sacerdotes, y a todo el pueblo de la tierra; en fin, ¡a todos los que pasaron por en medio de las dos partes del becerro!

20 y ea, I have given them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and their carcase hath been for food to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth.

Voy a ponerlos en manos de sus enemigos, que quieren matarlos. Sus cadáveres les servirán de comida a las aves de rapiña y a los animales salvajes.

21 ` And Zedekiah king of Judah, and his heads, I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and into the hand of the forces of the king of Babylon, that are going up from off you.

Al rey Sedequías y a sus príncipes los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos, que quieren matarlos, y en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia, que ha dejado de atacarlos.

22 L o, I am commanding -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and have brought them back unto this city, and they have fought against it, and captured it, and burned it with fire, and the cities of Judah I do make a desolation -- without inhabitant.'

Voy a darles la orden de volver a esta ciudad, y de que la ataquen y la conquisten, y le prendan fuego. Voy a hacer de las ciudades de Judá un desierto, hasta que no quede un solo habitante.» —Palabra del Señor.
