1 A nd Rachel seeth that she hath not borne to Jacob, and Rachel is envious of her sister, and saith unto Jacob, `Give me sons, and if there is none -- I die.'

Al ver Raquel que ella no le daba hijos a Jacob, tuvo envidia de su hermana y le dijo a Jacob: «¡Dame hijos, pues de lo contrario me muero!»

2 A nd Jacob's anger burneth against Rachel, and he saith, `Am I in stead of God who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?'

Jacob se enojó con Raquel, y le dijo: «¿Acaso soy Dios, que le ha impedido a tu vientre dar fruto?»

3 A nd she saith, `Lo, my handmaid Bilhah, go in unto her, and she doth bear on my knees, and I am built up, even I, from her;'

Ella le dijo: «Aquí tienes a mi sierva Bilá. Únete a ella. Así ella dará a luz sobre mis rodillas, y también yo tendré hijos de ella.»

4 a nd she giveth to him Bilhah her maid-servant for a wife, and Jacob goeth in unto her;

Y Raquel le dio a su sierva Bilá por mujer, y Jacob se unió a ella.

5 a nd Bilhah conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son,

Y Bilá concibió, y le dio a Jacob un hijo.

6 a nd Rachel saith, `God hath decided for me, and also hath hearkened to my voice, and giveth to me a son;' therefore hath she called his name Dan.

Entonces dijo Raquel: «Dios me juzgó, y oyó también mi voz, y me dio un hijo.» Por eso le puso por nombre Dan.

7 A nd Bilhah, Rachel's maid-servant, conceiveth again, and beareth a second son to Jacob,

Bilá, la sierva de Raquel, concibió otra vez y le dio a Jacob un segundo hijo.

8 a nd Rachel saith, `With wrestlings of God I have wrestled with my sister, yea, I have prevailed;' and she calleth his name Napthali.

Y Raquel dijo: «Tremendas luchas he librado con mi hermana, y la he vencido.» Y llamó a su hijo Neftalí.

9 A nd Leah seeth that she hath ceased from bearing, and she taketh Zilpah her maid-servant, and giveth her to Jacob for a wife;

Al ver Lea que ella había dejado de dar a luz, tomó a su sierva Zilpa y se la dio a Jacob por mujer.

10 a nd Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth to Jacob a son,

Y Zilpa, la sierva de Lea, le dio a Jacob un hijo.

11 a nd Leah saith, `A troop is coming;' and she calleth his name Gad.

Entonces dijo Lea: «¡Llegó la buena suerte!», así que le puso por nombre Gad.

12 A nd Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth a second son to Jacob,

Zilpa, la sierva de Lea, le dio otro hijo a Jacob;

13 a nd Leah saith, `Because of my happiness, for daughters have pronounced me happy;' and she calleth his name Asher.

y Lea dijo: «¡Qué felicidad la mía! ¡Las mujeres me considerarán feliz!» Y le puso por nombre Aser.

14 A nd Reuben goeth in the days of wheat-harvest, and findeth love-apples in the field, and bringeth them in unto Leah, his mother, and Rachel saith unto Leah, `Give to me, I pray thee, of the love-apples of thy son.'

Durante la siega del trigo, Rubén fue al campo y encontró mandrágoras, las cuales llevó a Lea, su madre. Y Raquel le dijo a Lea: «Por favor, dame algunas de las mandrágoras de tu hijo.»

15 A nd she saith to her, `Is thy taking my husband a little thing, that thou hast taken also the love-apples of my son?' and Rachel saith, `Therefore doth he lie with thee to-night, for thy son's love-apples.'

Y ella le respondió: «¿Te parece poco haberme quitado a mi marido, que ahora quieres quitarme también las mandrágoras de mi hijo?» Y Raquel le propuso: «Pues a cambio de las mandrágoras de tu hijo, Jacob dormirá contigo esta noche.»

16 A nd Jacob cometh in from the field at evening; and Leah goeth to meet him, and saith, `Unto me dost thou come in, for hiring I have hired thee with my son's love-apples;' and he lieth with her during that night.

En la tarde, cuando Jacob volvió del campo, Lea salió a su encuentro y le dijo: «Únete conmigo. Francamente, te he alquilado a cambio de las mandrágoras de mi hijo.» Y Jacob durmió con ella aquella noche.

17 A nd God hearkeneth unto Leah, and she conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son, a fifth,

Y Dios oyó a Lea, y ésta concibió y le dio a Jacob su quinto hijo.

18 a nd Leah saith, `God hath given my hire, because I have given my maid-servant to my husband;' and she calleth his name Issachar.

Y dijo Lea: «Dios me ha recompensado, por haberle dado mi marido a mi sierva.» Por eso le puso por nombre Isacar.

19 A nd conceive again doth Leah, and she beareth a sixth son to Jacob,

Después Lea volvió a concebir, y le dio a Jacob su sexto hijo.

20 a nd Leah saith, `God hath endowed me -- a good dowry; this time doth my husband dwell with me, for I have borne to him six sons;' and she calleth his name Zebulun;

Entonces dijo Lea: «¡Que bello regalo me ha hecho Dios! Ahora mi marido vivirá conmigo, pues ya le he dado seis hijos.» Y le puso por nombre Zabulón.

21 a nd afterwards hath she born a daughter, and calleth her name Dinah.

Después dio a luz una hija, y le puso por nombre Dina.

22 A nd God remembereth Rachel, and God hearkeneth unto her, and openeth her womb,

Pero Dios se acordó de Raquel. La escuchó y le concedió tener hijos.

23 a nd she conceiveth and beareth a son, and saith, `God hath gathered up my reproach;'

Y ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo. Entonces dijo: «Dios ha borrado mi vergüenza»,

24 a nd she calleth his name Joseph, saying, `Jehovah is adding to me another son.'

y le puso por nombre José, pues dijo: «¡Quiera el Señor darme un hijo más!» Tretas de Jacob y de Labán

25 A nd it cometh to pass, when Rachel hath borne Joseph, that Jacob saith unto Laban, `Send me away, and I go unto my place, and to my land;

Por el tiempo en que Raquel dio a luz a José, sucedió que Jacob le dijo a Labán: «Déjame ir, y volveré a mi lugar, a mi propia tierra.

26 g ive up my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and I go; for thou -- thou hast known my service which I have served thee.'

Entrégame a mis mujeres y mis hijos, por quienes te he servido, y déjame ir. Tú bien sabes cómo he trabajado para ti.»

27 A nd Laban saith unto him, `If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes -- I have observed diligently that Jehovah doth bless me for thy sake.'

Y Labán le respondió: «Si merezco que me trates con bondad, quédate. Se me ha revelado que gracias a ti el Señor me ha bendecido.»

28 H e saith also, `Define thy hire to me, and I give.'

Y añadió: «Dime cuánto quieres ganar, que yo te lo pagaré.»

29 A nd he saith unto him, `Thou -- thou hast known that which I have served thee, and that which thy substance was with me;

Y Jacob respondió: «Tú bien sabes cómo he trabajado para ti, y cómo ha estado tu ganado conmigo.

30 f or little which thou hast had at my appearance, and it breaketh forth into a multitude, and Jehovah blesseth thee at my coming; and now, when do I make, I also, for mine own house?'

Lo poco que tenías antes de mi llegada, ha crecido en gran número. Con mi llegada el Señor te ha bendecido, pero ¿cuándo haré algo también por mi propia casa?»

31 A nd he saith, `What do I give to thee?' And Jacob saith, `Thou dost not give me anything; if thou do for me this thing, I turn back; I have delight; thy flock I watch;

Y Labán le dijo: «¿Qué quieres que te dé?» Y Jacob respondió: «No me des nada. Si quieres hacer algo por mí, haz lo siguiente y yo volveré a cuidar de tus ovejas.

32 I pass through all thy flock to-day to turn aside from thence every sheep speckled and spotted, and every brown sheep among the lambs, and speckled and spotted among the goats -- and it hath been my hire;

Hoy pasaré por todo tu rebaño, y apartaré todas las ovejas manchadas y salpicadas de color, y todas las ovejas de color oscuro, más las cabras que sean manchadas y salpicadas de color. Ésta será mi paga.

33 a nd my righteousness hath answered for me in the day to come, when it cometh in for my hire before thy face; -- every one which is not speckled and spotted among goats, and brown among lambs -- it is stolen with me.'

Así el día de mañana, cuando vengas a reconocer mi paga, mi honradez responderá por mí. Toda cabra que no sea pintada ni manchada, y toda oveja entre mis ovejas que no sea de color oscuro, se me achacará como robada.»

34 A nd Laban saith, `Lo, O that it were according to thy word;'

Labán dijo entonces: «Pues bien, que sea como tú dices.»

35 a nd he turneth aside during that day the ring-straked and the spotted he-goats, and all the speckled and the spotted she-goats, every one that white in it, and every brown one among the lambs, and he giveth into the hand of his sons,

Ese mismo día, Labán apartó los machos cabríos manchados y rayados, y todas las cabras manchadas y salpicadas de color, y toda la que tenía en sí algo de blanco, y todas las ovejas de color oscuro, y las puso a cargo de sus hijos.

36 a nd setteth a journey of three days between himself and Jacob; and Jacob is feeding the rest of the flock of Laban.

Luego puso tres días de camino entre él y Jacob. Mientras tanto, Jacob cuidaba el resto de las ovejas de Labán.

37 A nd Jacob taketh to himself a rod of fresh poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut, and doth peel in them white peelings, making bare the white that on the rods,

Jacob tomó entonces varas verdes de álamo, avellano y castaño, y les quitó la corteza para que se viera lo blanco de las varas;

38 a nd setteth up the rods which he hath peeled in the gutters in the watering troughs (when the flock cometh in to drink), over-against the flock, that they may conceive in their coming in to drink;

luego puso las varas sin corteza en los abrevaderos, donde las ovejas venían a beber agua, y éstas se apareaban delante de las varas cuando venían a beber.

39 a nd the flocks conceive at the rods, and the flock beareth ring-straked, speckled, and spotted ones.

Así las ovejas concebían delante de las varas, y parían borregos listados, pintados y salpicados de diversos colores.

40 A nd the lambs hath Jacob parted, and he putteth the face of the flock towards the ring-straked, also all the brown in the flock of Laban, and he setteth his own droves by themselves, and hath not set them near Laban's flock.

Entonces Jacob apartaba los corderos, y todos los oscuros y listados del hato de Labán los ponía entre su propio rebaño; luego ponía aparte su hato, y no lo juntaba con las ovejas de Labán.

41 A nd it hath come to pass whenever the strong ones of the flock conceive, that Jacob set the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, to cause them to conceive by the rods,

Y cada vez que las ovejas más fuertes estaban en celo, Jacob ponía las varas en los abrevaderos, delante de las ovejas, para que concibieran a la vista de las varas;

42 a nd when the flock is feeble, he doth not set; and the feeble ones have been Laban's, and the strong ones Jacob's.

pero cuando venían las ovejas más débiles, no las ponía. Así, las más débiles eran para Labán, y las más fuertes para Jacob.

43 A nd the man increaseth very exceedingly, and hath many flocks, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.

Fue así como este varón llegó a ser muy rico, y tuvo muchas ovejas, y siervas y siervos, además de camellos y asnos.
