1 A nd Sarai, Abram's wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name Hagar;

Saraí, la esposa de Abrán, no le daba hijos, pero tenía una sierva egipcia que se llamaba Agar.

2 a nd Sarai saith unto Abram, `Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;' and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.

Entonces Saraí le dijo a Abrán: «Ya ves que el Señor me ha hecho estéril, así que te ruego que te allegues a mi sierva; tal vez tendré hijos de ella.» Y Abrán atendió al ruego de Saraí.

3 A nd Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,

A los diez años de que Abrán había habitado en la tierra de Canaán, Saraí, la esposa de Abrán, tomó a Agar, su sierva egipcia, y se la dio por mujer a Abrán, su marido.

4 a nd he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

Y él se allegó a Agar, y ésta concibió; y al darse cuenta de que había concebido, comenzó a mirar con desprecio a su señora.

5 A nd Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence for thee; I -- I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'

Entonces Saraí le dijo a Abrán: «¡Que mi afrenta recaiga sobre ti! Yo te di por mujer a mi sierva, y al verse encinta me mira con desprecio. ¡Que juzgue el Señor entre tú y yo!»

6 A nd Abram saith unto Sarai, `Lo, thine handmaid in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.

Y Abrán le respondió a Saraí: «Pues tu sierva está en tus manos. ¡Haz con ella lo que mejor te parezca!» Y como Saraí la humillaba, ella huyó de su presencia.

7 A nd a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way Shur,

Pero el ángel del Señor la encontró junto a un manantial en el desierto, que es el manantial que está en el camino a Shur,

8 a nd he saith, `Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, `From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.'

y le dijo: «Agar, sierva de Saraí, ¿de dónde vienes, y a dónde vas?» Y ella respondió: «Estoy huyendo de Saraí, mi señora.»

9 A nd the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'

El ángel del Señor le dijo: «Regresa con tu señora, y ponte en sus manos.»

10 a nd the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'

Además, el ángel del Señor le dijo: «Voy a multiplicar tu descendencia. Llegarán a ser tantos, que no podrán ser contados.»

11 a nd the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Behold thou conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

El ángel del Señor también le dijo: «Tú has concebido, y darás a luz un hijo. Le pondrás por nombre Ismael, porque el Señor ha oído tu aflicción.

12 a nd he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him -- and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'

Será un hombre indómito; luchará contra todos, y todos lucharán contra él, pero a pesar de todos sus hermanos establecerá su residencia.»

13 A nd she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, `Thou, O God, my beholder;' for she said, `Even here have I looked behind my beholder?'

Como el Señor le había hablado, ella le dio este nombre: «Tú eres el Dios que ve», pues dijo: «¿Acaso no he visto aquí también al que me ve?»,

14 t herefore hath one called the well, `The well of the Living One, my beholder;' lo, between Kadesh and Bered.

y al manantial lo llamó «Pozo del que vive y me ve». Ese pozo está entre Cades y Bered.

15 A nd Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;

Agar dio a luz un hijo de Abrán, y éste le puso por nombre Ismael.

16 a nd Abram a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.

Abrán tenía ochenta y seis años de edad cuando Agar dio a luz a Ismael.
