1 A nd it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.

En el año catorce del reinado de Ezequías, el rey Senaquerib, de Asiria, atacó y conquistó todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá.

2 A nd the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller's field,

Desde Laquis, el rey de Asiria envió a su primer oficial al frente de un gran ejército, para que atacara a Jerusalén y al rey Ezequías; y el primer oficial acampó junto al acueducto del estanque superior, camino al Campo del Lavador.

3 a nd go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.

Entonces fue a verlo el mayordomo Eliaquín hijo de Hilcías, junto con el escriba Sebna y el canciller Yoaj hijo de Asaf.

4 A nd Rabshakeh saith unto them, `Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, `Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What this confidence in which thou hast confided?

El primer oficial de Senaquerib les dijo: «Digan a Ezequías que el gran rey de Asiria manda a decirle: “¿En qué te apoyas, que te sientes tan confiado?

5 I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?

Tú hablas de contar con una coalición y con poder para hacerme la guerra, pero yo digo que esas no son más que palabras huecas. Dime ahora: ¿en quién confías, que te rebelas contra mí?

6 ` Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed -- on Egypt -- which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it -- so Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.

Por lo visto, confías en ese bastón de caña quebradiza que es Egipto, ¡bastón que le atravesará y perforará la mano a quien se apoye en él! ¡Eso es el faraón, el rey de Egipto, para todos los que en él confíen!

7 ` And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?

Pero si me dices que ustedes confían en el Señor su Dios, ¿acaso no se trata de ese Dios cuyos lugares altos y altares tú, Ezequías, mandaste quitar, y luego dijiste a Judá y a Jerusalén: ‘Adoren ante este altar’?”

8 ` And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.

Yo te sugiero que hagas ahora este trato con mi señor, el rey de Asiria: Yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú puedes hallar otros tantos jinetes para que cabalguen sobre ellos.

9 A nd how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?

¿Cómo vas a hacerle frente a un simple capitán, al menor de los siervos de mi señor, aun cuando estés confiado en Egipto y en sus carros y su caballería?

10 A nd now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'

Si yo he venido a destruir esta tierra es porque antes el Señor me dijo: “¡Ve a esa tierra y destrúyela!”»

11 A nd Eliakim saith -- and Shebna and Joah -- unto Rabshakeh, `Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us Jewish, in the ears of the people who on the wall.'

Entonces Eliaquín, Sebna y Yoaj le dijeron al primer oficial: «Por favor, habla a estos siervos tuyos en arameo, que nosotros lo entendemos. No nos hables en la lengua de Judá, porque te oye toda la gente que está sobre la muralla.»

12 A nd Rabshakeh saith, `Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men -- those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?'

Pero el primer oficial dijo: «¿Y acaso me envió mi señor a decirles esto sólo a ti y a tu señor? ¡No! ¡Me envió también a la gente que está sobre la muralla, y que junto con ustedes pronto van a comerse su propio estiércol y a beberse su propia orina!»

13 A nd Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice Jewish, and saith, `Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:

Enseguida el primer oficial se puso en pie, y a voz en cuello gritó en la lengua de Judá: «¡Escuchen las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria!

14 T hus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;

Así dice el rey: “Que no los engañe Ezequías, porque no va a poder salvarlos.

15 a nd let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

Que no les haga Ezequías confiar en el Señor, al decir: ‘El Señor nos librará; esta ciudad no caerá en manos del rey de Asiria.’

16 ` Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,

No le hagan caso a Ezequías. El rey de Asiria les dice: ‘Hagan la paz conmigo. Entréguense a mí, y cada uno de ustedes podrá comer de su viña y de su higuera, y beberá también de las aguas de su pozo,

17 t ill my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;

hasta que yo venga y los lleve a una tierra como la de ustedes, una tierra en la que abunda el trigo y el vino, el pan y las viñas.

18 l est Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. `Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?

Tengan cuidado. Que no los engañe Ezequías con eso de que el Señor los salvará. ¿Acaso los dioses de las otras naciones pudieron salvar a sus países de la mano del rey de Asiria?

19 W here the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

¿Dónde están los dioses de Jamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde está el dios de Sefarvayin? ¿Acaso pudieron salvar a Samaria de mi mano?

20 W ho among all the gods of these lands they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'

¿Qué dios entre los dioses de esos países pudo librar de mi mano a su país, como para que el Señor libre de mi mano a Jerusalén?’”»

21 A nd they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, `Do not answer him.'

Pero ellos se quedaron callados, y no le respondieron una sola palabra, porque el rey les había ordenado que no le respondieran.

22 A nd Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.

Luego el mayordomo Eliaquín hijo de Hilcías, el escriba Sebna y el canciller Yoaj hijo de Asaf se presentaron ante Ezequías, y allí se rasgaron los vestidos y le contaron lo que había dicho el primer oficial.
