1 I n the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, come hath Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and layeth siege against it;

En el año tercero del reinado de Joacín, rey de Judá, el rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia vino a Jerusalén y la sitió.

2 a nd the Lord giveth into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the house of God, and he bringeth them in the land of Shinar, the house of his god, and the vessels he hath brought in the treasure-house of his god.

Y el Señor permitió que el rey Joacín cayera en manos de Nabucodonosor, y que éste se llevara buena parte de los utensilios del templo de Dios al templo de su dios en Babilonia, y que los depositara en el tesoro del templo de su dios.

3 A nd the king saith, to Ashpenaz master of his eunuchs, to bring in out of the sons of Israel, (even of the royal seed, and of the chiefs,)

Además, el rey Nabocodonosor dio órdenes a Aspenaz, jefe de sus eunucos, de que se llevara a algunos israelitas pertenecientes a la familia real.

4 l ads in whom there is no blemish, and of good appearance, and skilful in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and teaching thought, and who have ability to stand in the palace of the king, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

Debían ser jóvenes bien parecidos y sin defectos físicos, capacitados en todo conocimiento, inteligentes y capaces de aprender, y con las cualidades suficientes para estar en el palacio del rey. A éstos Aspenaz debía enseñarles la escritura y la lengua de los caldeos.

5 A nd the king doth appoint for them a rate, day by day, of the king's portion of food, and of the wine of his drinking, so as to nourish them three years, that at the end thereof they may stand before the king.

Para su alimentación diaria, el rey señaló provisiones de su propia comida y de su propio vino. Su educación duraría tres años, al cabo de los cuales serían presentados ante el rey.

6 A nd there are among them out of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

Entre estos jóvenes se hallaban Daniel, Jananías, Misael y Azarías, que eran de la tribu de Judá.

7 a nd the chief of the eunuchs setteth names on them, and he setteth on Daniel, Belteshazzar; and on Hananiah, Shadrach; and on Mishael, Meshach; and on Azariah, Abed-Nego.

Pero el jefe de los eunucos les cambió de nombre: a Daniel lo llamó Beltsasar; a Jananías, Sadrac; a Misael, Mesac; y a Azarías, Abednego.

8 A nd Daniel purposeth in his heart that he will not pollute himself with the king's portion of food, and with the wine of his drinking, and he seeketh of the chief of the eunuchs that he may not pollute himself.

En lo íntimo, Daniel se propuso no contaminarse con la ración de la comida y bebida del rey que se le daba, y le pidió al jefe de los eunucos que no se le obligara a contaminarse.

9 A nd God giveth Daniel for kindness and for mercies before the chief of the eunuchs;

Y Dios hizo que Daniel se ganara la simpatía y buena voluntad del jefe de los eunucos,

10 a nd the chief of the eunuchs saith to Daniel, `I am fearing my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink, for why doth he see your faces sadder than the lads which of your circle? then ye have made my head indebted to the king,'

aunque éste le dijo a Daniel: «Tengo miedo de mi señor el rey, que claramente dijo lo que ustedes debían comer y beber. Si más tarde él ve que los rostros de ustedes son más pálidos que los de los otros jóvenes semejantes a ustedes, me habrán condenado a que el rey me corte la cabeza.»

11 A nd Daniel saith unto the Meltzar, whom the chief of the eunuchs hath appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

El jefe de los eunucos había puesto al cuidado de Daniel, Jananías, Misael y Azarías, a un guardia llamado Melsar. A éste Daniel le dijo:

12 ` Try, I pray thee, thy servants, ten days; and they give to us of the vegetables, and we eat, and water, and we drink;

«Yo te ruego que hagas con estos siervos tuyos una prueba de diez días. Ordena que nos den de comer legumbres, y que nos den de beber agua.

13 a nd our appearance is seen before thee, and the appearance of the lads who are eating the king's portion of food, and as thou seest -- deal with thy servants.'

Después de esta prueba, compara nuestro semblante con el de los otros jóvenes que reciben la ración de la comida del rey, y haz entonces con estos siervos tuyos según lo que veas.»

14 A nd he hearkeneth to them, to this word, and trieth them ten days:

Melsar estuvo de acuerdo con ellos, e hizo la prueba de los diez días.

15 a nd at the end of ten days their appearance hath appeared better and fatter in flesh then any of the lads who are eating the king's portion of food.

Vencido el plazo, el semblante de ellos era mejor y más robusto que el de los otros jóvenes que recibían la ración de la comida del rey.

16 A nd the Meltzar is taking away their portion of food, and the wine of their drink, and is giving to them vegetables.

De modo que Melsar se llevaba la ración de la comida y del vino que era su alimento, y en su lugar les daba legumbres.

17 A s to these four lads, God hath given to them knowledge and understanding in every literature, and wisdom; and Daniel hath given instruction about every vision and dreams.

Dios les dio a estos cuatro jóvenes conocimientos e inteligencia en todas las letras y ciencias. Además, Daniel era muy entendido en cuestiones de visiones y sueños.

18 A nd at the end of the days that the king had said to bring them in, bring them in doth the chief of the eunuchs before Nebuchadnezzar.

Y cuando se cumplió el plazo al fin del cual el rey Nabucodonosor había ordenado que los llevaran a su presencia, el jefe de los eunucos los llevó ante él.

19 A nd the king speaketh with them, and there hath none been found among them all like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, and they stand before the king;

Y el rey habló con ellos, y entre todos los jóvenes no se halló a nadie como Daniel, Jananías, Misael y Azarías, de modo que todos ellos se quedaron al servicio del rey.

20 a nd any matter of wisdom understanding that the king hath sought of them, he findeth them ten hands above all the scribes, the enchanters, who in all his kingdom.

En todo lo que el rey les preguntó, y que tenía que ver con cuestiones de sabiduría e inteligencia, los halló diez veces más sabios que todos los magos y astrólogos que había en todo su reino.

21 A nd Daniel is unto the first year of Cyrus the king.

Fue así como Daniel se quedó allí hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.
