1 M any teachers become not, my brethren, having known that greater judgment we shall receive,

Hermanos míos, no se convierta la mayoría de ustedes en maestros. Bien saben que el juicio que recibiremos será mayor.

2 f or we all make many stumbles; if any one in word doth not stumble, this one a perfect man, able to bridle also the whole body;

Todos cometemos muchos errores. Quien no comete errores en lo que dice, es una persona perfecta, y además capaz de dominar todo su cuerpo.

3 l o, the bits we put into the mouths of the horses for their obeying us, and their whole body we turn about;

A los caballos les ponemos un freno en la boca, para que nos obedezcan, y así podemos controlar todo su cuerpo.

4 l o, also the ships, being so great, and by fierce winds being driven, are led about by a very small helm, whithersoever the impulse of the helmsman doth counsel,

Y fíjense en los barcos: Aunque son muy grandes e impulsados por fuertes vientos, se les dirige por un timón muy pequeño, y el piloto los lleva por donde quiere.

5 s o also the tongue is a little member, and doth boast greatly; lo, a little fire how much wood it doth kindle!

Así es la lengua. Aunque es un miembro muy pequeño, se jacta de grandes cosas. ¡Vean qué bosque tan grande puede incendiarse con un fuego tan pequeño!

6 a nd the tongue a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.

Y la lengua es fuego; es un mundo de maldad. La lengua ocupa un lugar entre nuestros miembros, pero es capaz de contaminar todo el cuerpo; si el infierno la prende, puede inflamar nuestra existencia entera.

7 F or every nature, both of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature,

La gente puede domesticar y, en efecto, ha domesticado, a toda clase de bestias, aves, serpientes y animales marinos,

8 a nd the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, an unruly evil, full of deadly poison,

pero nadie puede domesticar a la lengua. Ésta es un mal indómito, que rebosa de veneno mortal.

9 w ith it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men made according to the similitude of God;

Con la lengua bendecimos al Dios y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos, que han sido creados a imagen de Dios.

10 o ut of the same mouth doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these things so to happen;

De la misma boca salen bendiciones y maldiciones. Hermanos míos, ¡esto no puede seguir así!

11 d oth the fountain out of the same opening pour forth the sweet and the bitter?

¿Acaso de una misma fuente puede brotar agua dulce y agua amarga?

12 i s a fig-tree able, my brethren, olives to make? or a vine figs? so no fountain salt and sweet water to make.

No es posible, hermanos míos, que la higuera dé aceitunas, o que la vid dé higos. Ni tampoco puede ninguna fuente dar agua salada y agua dulce. La sabiduría de lo alto

13 W ho wise and intelligent among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of wisdom,

¿Quién de ustedes es sabio y entendido? Demuéstrelo con su buena conducta, y por medio de actos realizados con la humildad propia de la sabiduría.

14 a nd if bitter zeal ye have, and rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth;

Pero si ustedes abrigan en su corazón amargura, envidia y rivalidad, no tienen de qué presumir y están falseando la verdad.

15 t his wisdom is not descending from above, but earthly, physical, demon-like,

Esta clase de sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, estrictamente humana, y diabólica.

16 f or where zeal and rivalry, there is insurrection and every evil matter;

Pues donde hay envidias y rivalidades, allí hay confusión y toda clase de mal.

17 a nd the wisdom from above, first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: --

Pero la sabiduría que viene de lo alto es, ante todo, pura, y además pacífica, amable, benigna, llena de compasión y de buenos frutos, ecuánime y genuina.

18 a nd the fruit of the righteousness in peace is sown to those making peace.

Y el fruto de la justicia se siembra en paz para los que trabajan por la paz.
