1 B e not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.

Hermanos míos, no se convierta la mayoría de ustedes en maestros. Bien saben que el juicio que recibiremos será mayor.

2 F or we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, he a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.

Todos cometemos muchos errores. Quien no comete errores en lo que dice, es una persona perfecta, y además capaz de dominar todo su cuerpo.

3 B ehold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies.

A los caballos les ponemos un freno en la boca, para que nos obedezcan, y así podemos controlar todo su cuerpo.

4 B ehold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will.

Y fíjense en los barcos: Aunque son muy grandes e impulsados por fuertes vientos, se les dirige por un timón muy pequeño, y el piloto los lleva por donde quiere.

5 T hus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles!

Así es la lengua. Aunque es un miembro muy pequeño, se jacta de grandes cosas. ¡Vean qué bosque tan grande puede incendiarse con un fuego tan pequeño!

6 a nd the tongue fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell.

Y la lengua es fuego; es un mundo de maldad. La lengua ocupa un lugar entre nuestros miembros, pero es capaz de contaminar todo el cuerpo; si el infierno la prende, puede inflamar nuestra existencia entera.

7 F or every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species;

La gente puede domesticar y, en efecto, ha domesticado, a toda clase de bestias, aves, serpientes y animales marinos,

8 b ut the tongue can no one among men tame; an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison.

pero nadie puede domesticar a la lengua. Ésta es un mal indómito, que rebosa de veneno mortal.

9 T herewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after likeness of God.

Con la lengua bendecimos al Dios y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos, que han sido creados a imagen de Dios.

10 O ut of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus.

De la misma boca salen bendiciones y maldiciones. Hermanos míos, ¡esto no puede seguir así!

11 D oes the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter?

¿Acaso de una misma fuente puede brotar agua dulce y agua amarga?

12 C an, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither salt make sweet water.

No es posible, hermanos míos, que la higuera dé aceitunas, o que la vid dé higos. Ni tampoco puede ninguna fuente dar agua salada y agua dulce. La sabiduría de lo alto

13 W ho wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom;

¿Quién de ustedes es sabio y entendido? Demuéstrelo con su buena conducta, y por medio de actos realizados con la humildad propia de la sabiduría.

14 b ut if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

Pero si ustedes abrigan en su corazón amargura, envidia y rivalidad, no tienen de qué presumir y están falseando la verdad.

15 T his is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish.

Esta clase de sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, estrictamente humana, y diabólica.

16 F or where emulation and strife, there disorder and every evil thing.

Pues donde hay envidias y rivalidades, allí hay confusión y toda clase de mal.

17 B ut the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned.

Pero la sabiduría que viene de lo alto es, ante todo, pura, y además pacífica, amable, benigna, llena de compasión y de buenos frutos, ecuánime y genuina.

18 B ut fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace.

Y el fruto de la justicia se siembra en paz para los que trabajan por la paz.
